Surnames: DOOHER, DOUGHER
Once again, after a wonderful visit to Killala, I spent
a couple days with Kevin and Christine Dooher tracking down
possible family connections. A wonderful and welcoming
family - if you're in Killala looking for Dooher's/Dougher's -
look them up!!

After a many visits to the local cemeteries and after talking
to a number of local townspeople, here's some information
on the Killala/Ross/Kilfian Doohers:

The Doohers in Killala/Ross today have their roots in
Ballymachola (sometimes referred to as Ballysokeery) -
Parish of Cooneal. It appears there were 2 brothers in the
mid 1800s:

1. John DOOHER m. Mary CAWLEY. Their children include:
a. Michael (d. Oct 2, 1956) m Teresa Cawley - their
children include: Mary Gillespie, Theresa (in the
homestead, Martina, and a son who died at birth)
b. a daughter who married McGiviney
c. Mary who married McHale
d. a daughter who married Sweeney
e. Celia Jane who married Currin
f. a daughter who married Diskin (unsure about this one)
g. Agnes unmarried
There may also have been a daughter who married LYNN and
MAYOCK

There is a headstone errected at the very entrance (on the left) of the Magownagh graveyard for John and Mary DOOHER. It reads:

John and Mary DOOHER
of Ballymachola
Also my grandparents
Errected by Michael DOOHER

There is another headstone in the Magownagh graveyard that reads:

My Dear Husband - Michael DOOHER, Ballymachola
Died 2 Oct 1956
His Wife - Teresa
Died 25 March 1997

2. Michael DOOHER m Ann QUINN
(Ann was from Magawnah) - Michael died at
a young age and Ann remarried Dan HOLMES.
Dan HOLMES and ANN QUINN DOOHER had 8 children
together. However, before Michael died, Michael and Ann
had 3 children: (Note - the HOLMES family still live on
what was the DOOHER homestead in Ballymacholla)
a. Mary - married Reape. They had 3 sons and 1
daughter. Oldest son (John) went to NYC area.
The other sons did not marry
b. John - died as an infant
c. Michael (a tall man) - married Mary Sullivan (a tall
woman) from Ross. When they married, Michael
moved to the SULLIVAN farm in Ross to manage it.
Michael DOOHER and Mary SULLIVAN had the
following children:
1. Dolores DOOHER m. Jack FRAYLING
2. Margaret Ann "Maggie" DOOHER m. WEBB
3. Elizabeth DOOHER - never married
4. Kathleen DOOHER m. Victor MCLEOD
5. John DOOHER m. Mary KNOX - their children
include Michael (in England), Martin, and 1
daughter
6. Patrick DOOHER m. Ellen CLARKE - (burried
in the 'new' Killala graveyard). Their
children include Michael (in Derry),
Patrick John (at the homestead in Ross),
Anthony (in England), Mary (in Dublin),
Shelia (in Dublin), and Kevin (in Killala)

Michael DOOHER and Mary SULLIVAN are burried in the graveyard behind the Anglican Church (formerly a Roman Catholic Church prior to the Reformation) in Killala. The headstone reads:

Michael DOOHER died 1909 (born 1871)
Mary (SULLIVAN) DOOHER his wife died Sept 1948

I hope this information helps!

Once again - many thanks to Kevin and Christine for their
hospitality and friendship and eagerness to learn about the
DOOHERs in County Mayo! Also, a word of appreciation to Jim Gilvarry and his knowledge of County Mayo.
