Fate's Sad Romance: James Doolin

From The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) August 1898. The original newspaper article is available through Ancestry.com. To my knowledge, I am not related to any of the people mentioned but it is a good story. This is an example of the variations in the surnames. It is quite rich in details. Hopefully, this will help someone with their research.

“Fate’s Sad Romance
Three Brothers Under Different Names
Truth Stranger Than Fiction - Chance the Element That Unites the Fraternal Trio. Two of Its Members Having Lived Long in the Same City.

From the Chicago Daily News: The strange story of the separation in childhood of the five sons of Patrick Dolan, at one time a blacksmith at Lockport, N.Y., after the death of their mother and the happy reunion of the three of them - all that are now living - came to light with the visit to Chicago of Fred Dooley of Rochester, N.Y., who is now dividing his time between the homes of his long-lost relatives. Probably the most peculiar feature of the story is that all but two of the brothers grew to manhood under different names and for several years two lived within a few miles of each other in Chicago and at the same time each was prosecuting a vigorous search for the other. The brothers now living and enjoying the reunion are: William Doolan, a hardware merchant living at 1231 Madison Street. Thomas Dolan, assistant engineer in the fire department, connected with engine company No. 57. Fred Dooley, a barber in Rochester, N.Y. The two who died since the separation were: Daniel Dooley, lately a baker at Rochester, James Doolin, who was a sailor and claimed Buffalo as his home. The story is best told by Thomas Doolan, whose efforts in finding his brothers have never waned since he first took up the search. He gives the following narrative: “Years ago my father Patrick Dolan, and my mother, whose maiden name was Katherine Green, settled in Lockport, having come to this country from County Louth, Ireland. Father was a blacksmith and I have been told was fairly prosperous. The family consisted of five boys. While we were all in tender years mother died and soon after father placed Daniel, Fred and myself in the Sisters’ Orphan home at Rochester and then disappeared. Since that time nothing has been heard of him and it is likely that he is dead. William was adopted by a man of the name of Casey, and an elderly woman, one Daughn, cared for James. Later, however, James was also placed in the Orphans’ home. I soon tired of life in the home and one night ran away and went to Wilson, N.Y. where for several years I mad my home with an old farmer whose name I cannot recall. For years I never heard from my brothers and drifted about the country doing almost anything that was honest and upright for a living. I came to Chicago, was married, and now have three children. I often wondered if I should ever again see my relatives and had almost given up hope when you can imagine my surprise when two men walked into the engine house and announced that they were my brothers. They were William and Fred, the latter having come from his home in Rochester, where in an odd manner, he had learned of our whereabouts. It all came about this way: Recently Daniel Frawley of this city established an agency for a Chicago brewing company in Rochester and he rented a store next door to Fred’s barber ship. He was well acquainted with me and had also known William. Fred corresponded with us and finally we were convinced that our relationship had been established. Further inquiries convinced us of the death of Daniel and James. We have also discovered an aunt in Seneca Falls, N.Y. and she has assisted us in the search for father. The aunt’s name is Mrs. Mary Celery.”

Hi.

I can't help you much, but the names you mentioned match my family so am replying.

My granfather was Edgar Monroe Sampley, and my grandmother was Minnie Killian, a younger sister of Francis Killian. I have very little info on my grandmother as she apparently died at around 30 or so. Don't know exactly when or where (would have been TX or OK) I obtained Francis'SSN application and that's how I found out Tennessee's maiden name was Doolin. I knew a couple of Francis' kids (I remember Verna most), but they were adults when I knew them. I would appreciate any info you have on anybody, Killian or Doolin. The only thing I have is a picture of Minnie and her sister Clemmie when they were girls. Hope to hear from you.

Brenda Sampley Holguin

Re: Genivive Doolin of Warren Co., Ky.

Hi, Just happened to stumble accross your post, just as I happened to stumble across a Genivive Doolin a last summer. This Genivive I don't think is the one you are looking for, shes more my age I think. must be her daughter or something. Or Granddaugher. I was born in 48 so , yes, prob a granddaugher of the other. She is living in Portland, OR. I taked with her extensivly on the phone , several times. We swore to stay in contact regardless if we were same Doolin's or not. Then her phone number became busy and I haven't been able to reach her since. Am worried about her. This Gen was raised by an Aunt. Her story is quite sad actually. The reason she was raised by her aunt is that her father... a Doolin, prob son of your Genivive, killed her mother when she was quite young. I won't swear to it but I think she wittnessed it. She stayed kinda out of all Doolin things until she divorced awhile back and took back her maiden name. She is searching hard for answers to what line she is from. She was going to go to the Portland reunion in August but I couldn't get a hold of her about that time to tell her I wasn't going to make it or to find out if she did. If you can find her, please let me know , tell her to call me.. thanks, Linda

Kerry,
Regretably I haven't found anything new on Timothy Doolin or his family. I have found that Catherine Roden nee White was b.1821 Gravesend Kent to Richard & Rosamond White. She m. David Roddan 1839 Liverpool. She & David came to Sydney AUS on the Thomas Lowry 1840. I obtained NSW dc. No. 8165/1891 but this turned out to be Catherine Doolan also known as Catherine Doolin, Maude Brown & Catherine Morgan age c.28 of Ireland died at an insane hospital parents unknown. I can't find a death for Thomas Doolin / Doolan or Catherine. I haven't obtained the b or m certifis. for Thomas & Catherine's children. I haven't spent a lot of time on this but I have made a rough check of the Vic bdm index but nothing jumped out. Regards.
Ian

What happened to Bill Doolin's mother, Artemina?

I am researching the Bill Doolin family and am seeking assistance in finding out what happened to Bill Doolin's mother, Artemina (Bellar) Doolin after Michaels Doolin's death in 1856 in Johnson Co. AR? I believe that Barton Doolin purchased Artemin's share of the Doolin farm along with the shares of other siblings. Some family lore claims that Artemina moved to Ft. Smith, AR. She may have remarried and therefore went under and died with another last name. Any information on her and Bill's sister, Tennessee (Doolin) Killian would be greatly appreciated. Any and all suggestions would also be appreciated.

Regards from Mesa, AZ
Pat France

Doolins, from Ireland....the infamous "Bill Doolin"

My Husband Great Grandfather was Francis M. Killian. Francis Killian was born in Indian Territory, Chickasaw nation, Oklahoma. His mother's name was Tennessee Doolin. Tennessee Doolin's parents were Michael Doolin and Artemima Beller. That is the same parents of the famous outlaw Bill Doolin of the Doolin Dalton gang. My husband grandmother was Bill Doolin great neice, she remembers him. She is no longer living. I am finding this family migrating from Ireland, into Kentucky, then to Arkansas, later to Ok. then into Texas at the point where the Killians andDoolins marry. If any of these names match your family I would love to hear from you. Trying to figure out the puzzle how and why the Doolins endend up in Ok. and becoming the Outlaws.
Thanks
Kim

DOOLIN MARRIAGE

am seeking some assistance in finding the marriage (remarriage) of Artemina (Beller/Bellah) Doolin. She was the wife of Michael Doolin and the mother of well known outlaw Bill Doolin. After Michaels's death in Johnson Co., AR in 1865, she moved to Ft. Smith and was living there when she sold her share of the Doolin farm. I am trying to find out how and where she spent the rest of her life. I don't believe it was under the name of Doolin. Many Doolin family members changed their names because of the notoriety of Bill Doolin. I believe there is a good chance Artemina remarried and I would appreciate someone looking that up in a marriage index to see if she can be found remarrying from about 1866-1872. In the book 'Bill Doolin, OT Outlaw' it mentions that at one point he visited his mother who was living in OK.

Any assistance and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards from Mesa, AZ
Pat France

I lost your address and phone number, then realized you had moved anyway...

My sisters and I spent the day traveling around Franklin Co. Friday taking pictures. We finally found the old homestead site near Rockhill Cemetery. I must have a million questions for you. I've been reading through the last section you sent of the Hightower book and realized I did not send you any corrections for it. Is it too late? Do you have more ready to send out? We have updates to our line of course.

I have not been working on the research for quite awhile and just recently jumped back in, full force. :)

One question: You said John had only one brother, James. Somewhere I found a Polly, Robert, and Charles. Are they not his siblings? It may just be supposition on someone's part, but I'd sure like to find out if that is true.

Please contact me at lowkm@sbcglobal.net so we can reconnect.

Your Texas cousin, Linda

I see for some reason my previous post didn't happen...maybe I hit the wrong button, so here it is again.

For anyone interested in Genetic Genealogy (The use of DNA testing to aid traditional genealogical research), you care most welcomed to join a group of people who are searching for various Doolin, Dooling, Dulin, Duling, etc. (any spelling) line to determine who matches whom.

The Doolin (and variant spellings) DNA Project is small, but is growing. We are interested in proving to whom the famous Wild Bill Doolin, Oklahoma Outlaw, is related as there are a couple of families rumored to be related, but not paper trail has been found to prove it. There is a story of a Doolin who was kidnapped and taken to Canada that is being proved whether they are related to the KY Doolins.

DNA testing can help you find researchers connected to your line and testing can disprove branches thought to be related, as well.

Genetic Genealogy is the most accurate tool we have in our toolkit. It can prove and disprove the paper trail and it can help with brick walls.

You may see the website at: www.familytreedna.com/public/Doolin

Email me with any questions you may have.

Thank you,
Emily
Project Manager
aulicino@hevanet.com
