DOOLITTLE Arthur & Dortha

Broomall, Pa. (UPI) – Arthur K. Doolittle, 85, World War I pilot and noted chemical engineer, has died at the Broomall Presbyterian Home.
Mr. Doolittle, a test pilot for the Sopwith Camel airplane, flew damaged planes from France to England for repairs during World War I. He left the U.S. Army in 1919 with the rank of colonel.
Mr. Doolittle, who died late Tuesday, earned a degree in chemical engineering and joined the Union Carbide Chemical Co. in Charleston, W.Va., after the war. He directed the company’s plastics research and left in 1959 to form Arcadia Institute, which researched liquid plastics.
Mr. Doolittle also taught chemistry at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and at Princeton University.
A native of Oberlin, Ohio, [and a 1914 graduate of OHS,] Mr. Doolittle continued flying until the age of 76, with his wife, Dorothy [Dortha Bessie Bailey, OHS ‘14], as navigator and engineer.
He and his wife lived in Wallingford, Delaware County, before moving to the home last March.
Chicago Tribune, Chicago, Illinois, Friday, January 22, 1982.

Dortha Bessie (Bailey) Doolittle
Dortha Bailey Doolittle died July 15, 1982, at Broomall (Pa.) Presbyterian home, where she and her husband, the late Arthur K. Doolittle, lived since March 1981.

An emerita professor of chemistry at Widener College (since 1970), she taught at Oberlin, Oxford College for Women in Ohio, Barnard, Kanawha and Morris Harvey Colleges, West Virginia Institute of Technology, Drexel, Miami U., Yale, U. of Illinois and several private secondary schools. Except for a four year period (1954-58) when she worked as a research assistant for her husband at Union Carbide in Charleston, W.Va., Mrs. Doolittle’s entire career was devoted to teaching.
Born in Oberlin, Ohio (Lorain County) April 16, 1896, Mrs. Doolittle and her husband both graduated from Oberlin High School in 1914.
After college [Oberlin College class of 1918], she did graduate work at U. Illinois, U. Mich., and was an Ellen H. Richards Fellow at M.I.T. 1922-23 and a Charles M. Hall Research Fellow at Oberlin 1944-45, at which time she worked as an assistant to Prof. Harry N. Holmes.
She received the M.S. in 1920 from U. Illinois.
Mrs. Doolittle was listed in American Men and Women of Science, Who’s Who in American Education, Two Thousand Women of Achievement, and was listed in the third edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Iota Sigma Pi, Chi Beta Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was also a trustee of the Arcadia Institute for Scientific Research and served on several local and national committees of the American Chemical Society.
As an author, she had several articles published in chemistry journals and assisted in the edition of a 1071-page chemistry reference book written by her husband which was entitled, The Technology of Solvents and Plasticizers. Mrs. Doolittle also gave numerous papers on chemistry before technical groups.
For her dedication as an educator she received two awards from student groups at Widener in 1970 and three years later received the Alumni Association Citation from there.
For her steadfast involvement in Oberlin College and more specifically, in her own class activities, Mrs. Doolittle received the Alumni Association Certificate of Appreciation in 1979. She was then recognized for her accomplishment in encouraging her class to give a record breaking amount for the reunion giving program.
She had been the backbone of the revitalization of the Henry Hudson Memorial Scholarship Program (Hudson scholarships and how they grew, Fall 1979).
The fund was established by the Class of 1918 in honor of their classmate who lost his life as a pilot in WWI.
Since 1964 she coordinated the fund as a class project and came to Oberlin each fall to meet the recipients by inviting them to breakfast with her.
When Mrs. Doolittle was elected president of the class at its 45th reunion, she found that the fund still totaled the same $2,500 that was contributed in 1923.
She then reactivated the 1923 plan to increase the scholarship’s principal amount and at its 60th reunion the class had raised the funds to $168,541. The fund had grown to $173,670 when Mrs. Doolittle received her certificate and now provides five $1,200 scholarships per year.
In addition to working with this fund, she was a member of the Alumni Board (1967-70), class president (1963-68) and was class agent.
She was married to Arthur K. in 1923. He had received his education at Columbia and was a chemical engineer for Union Carbide and a consultant and professor at Drexel. Also born in Oberlin, he was the son of Frederick G. Doolittle, professor of violin and head of the violin department and Maude (Tucker ’91) Doolittle who was an instructor of piano in the Conservatory.
Mr. Doolittle was a test pilot for the Sopwith Camel airplanes during WWI. He left the Army in 1919 with the rank of 2nd lieutenant and was made an honorary colonel in 1973. He continued flying until the age of 76 with Mrs. Doolittle as navigator and engineer. He died Jan. 19 in the Presbyterian Home.
Mrs. Doolittle leaves son Robert F. ’48 and daughter Elizabeth Peckham ’49, eight grandchildren and her sister, Ruth ’29, of Elyria, Ohio.
A memorial service was held at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church with burial in Oberlin.
Contributions may be made to the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church or the Oberlin College Class of 1918 Scholarship Fund.
The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Oberlin, Ohio, Autumn 1982, p. 94.

Hi Nora,

I ran across your email address on a Ancestry.com posting. I was looking for some information regarding Gen Jimmy Doolittle as my son is doing a school report on the Doolittle Raid. I was surprised to see that your Doolittle go back to Connecticut. We must be in the same tree, as I have my line back to the same bunch.
Were you ever able to find the connection to the Jimmy Doolittle line? My son would get such a kick out of that.

Regards
I am looking for more information regarding Flora E. Doolittle who married Anson Perry (Son of Albert Perry and Jane Cummings) sometime before 1885. Flora passed away in 1916. Their first son was my great grandfather Cutler Doolittle Perry.

I would like to know who her parents are. In the 1880 census she is living in Oneonta with Deloss Doxtoder and Celia Doxtoder. I am not sure if Celia remarried Deloss. Celia is not listed as a widow. I can not find Flora in the 1870 census.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Need an exact death date (and burial place) for Miranda Pangborn Doolittle, b 19 Nov 1843 in Franklin, OH. She was last found living in Los Angeles, CA in 1920. She isn't on the 1930 census.

She was the second wife of Capt. Elkanah Doolittle, and lived most of her life in Onarga, IL. ELkanah died in 1897, and is buried in Onarga. There is no record that Miranda is buried in Onarga, and is likely buried in the Los Angeles area, possible in Long Beach.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/21591203/person/1108357302

Thanks

Thanks-now here's what I have on this Moses:
birth 1758 in Worcester, Ma.
death 8-22-1859
Burial: Wicklow, Ontario, Ca.
Occupation: Farmer
Residence: Shore of Lake Ontario, Ontario (Upper Canada) Can.

Moved with his father's family (Colonel Ephraim)first to Petersham, and was resident of Pittsford, Vt. in 1799.

But I don't have him as a minister. Do you have a reference for that? Since he was about 30 when moving, it's possible he went to Cambridge or Yale Div. Schools, as there are several Ma. Doolittles who went to one or the other. Still working on that branch of NH, Vt. and Canadian descendants of Ephraim. Will let you know if I can add anything else.

This is what I have for a timeline...

Moses Doolittle Rev. (1758 - 1829) is your 5th great grandfather
Deborah Dolittle (1793 - 1858) Daughter of Moses
ARREY DELONG (1817 - 1892) Son of Deborah
Harriet DE LONG (1847 - 1921) Daughter of ARREY
Elva (Elvie) Varco (1887 - 1962) Son of Harriet
Elva Erwin Varcoe (1929 - 1997) Son of Elva (Elvie)

According to what I have so far, Moses was born in Massachusetts and lived in Vermont until he move to Canada in 1799.

But like I said, I've been a little confused. So some of these facts might belong to a different person.
Thanks for that document-I will compare it to what I have, and then check further, as I know there are some missing spouses.

I have seven Moses D.'s, but none listed directly as ministers. But I have tons of census, vital records, etc. to get entered. So will let you know if I find details that will help. What time frame are you looking at? that will help me to better try and help.

My particular branch goes from the Abrahams to Hezekiah (twin)to Benjamin and then to Solomon,(ggggf) to Orrin Leander, (gggf)Orrin Lucien (ggf)and Caroline J. Sayer to Nettie Clarinda Doolittle (gm)

While I have more than 10,000 people in my tree so far, that barely scratches the surface, as you well know. I shoot for 50 names/verifications/pieces of new information, etc a week. Some weeks I do better, others worse. Let me know on your Moses, and if possible where he lived/when. I at least keep the un-transcribed stuff sorted by state and time frame, it would help.

Thanks,

Sharon

Ephraim Doolittle, born 1759, son of Samuel and Susanna

I need to find proof of two things for this Ephraim. First, that he was born circa 1759, and second, that he resided with his father in Worcester County MA at the beginning of the Rev War, and later moved with his father to Shaftsbury VT and maybe lived with his uncle Colonel Ephraim Doolittle in Shoreham VT around 1781-83.

The source for his birthyear is the book "The Doolittle Family in America." The earlier volumes of this book place him in Colonel Ephraim's family but Volume VIII correctly gives his father as Samuel (1719-1792.) I need some proof, other than family history that he was born in 1759. The 1830 census lists his age as between 60 and 70.

From "The Doolittle Family in America" Part IV page 483 Compiled by William Frederick Doolittle, M.D., 1904:
“Ephraim Doolittle b. 1759 Beekmans Manor, Dutchess NY." Of course there is no proof in Dutchess County, only that his father bought land there.

I thought I had the second part regarding his residence in either Worcester MA or Shoreham VT covered by the following two sources: Enlisted in War on Sep 28, 1777, Petersham, Worcester Co., MA, from Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War. Vol. 1-17. And when he moved with his father to Shaftsbury VT and was involved in the Alarm of 1780, cited in Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War 1775 to 1783. Rutland, VT. It appears that the DAR requires proof not just of his service from a particular region but also of his residence there.

There were some land records that were post-1783 but so far none that would prove where he resided during the war.

Any suggestions for where to look?

As you've probably seen in the Social Security Death Index, he lived 11/14/1933 - 11/20/2000, and last in Petaluma, Sonoma County, CA 94952.

At this site:

http://www.raogk.org/californ4.htm

you can find Sonoma County volunteers who may be able to help you with, or advise you on, local research.

Good luck!

I named it "Doolittles I America" so it's prob'ly based on information from the book of the same name. I must have gotten it from the Doolittles genealogy group some time ago. There are no other sources given but what it says is summarized here:
Name Joel DooIittle
Birth 26 Apr 1787
Christening
Death
Burial
Father John Doolittle
Mother Lucy Dean
Marriage(II} PoIly James
Son George (Twin) DoolittIe b. 10 May 1810, Shoreham, VT
Dau Melinda (Twin) Doolittle b. 10 May 1810
Son Joel Doolittle b. 25 Dec 1812, Shoreham, VT, d.
Governess for the Halle family in Cleveland, Ohio area

I am searching for information on a Maude Doolittle who was a governess for the(Sam and Blanche)Halle family in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area. They had a large farm which they purchased in 1912 (now a park) in Kirtland, Ohio and Maude taught the children much about the natural area in which they spent so much time each summer. See the following link for the history of the property: http://www.lakemetroparks.com/select-park/penitentiaryglen.s... . Maude was supposedly a "school teacher from Massachusetts who loved nature." I would greatly appreciate help in finding more information about this woman.

Harvey and Emily Doolittle, Settlers in the "Sufferers Land" of Ohio
I have posted a review of "History of the Fire-Lands," published in 1879 by WW Williams on the "Firelands History Website": http://firelands.wordpress.com.
Included in this book is a biography of Harvey and Emily (nee Wheeler) Doolittle, who settled in the Firelands of Northwestern Ohio in 1845. Also included are their portraits and an illustration of their residence.
The Firelands, or Sufferers' Land, was set aside for "Sufferers" in Connecticut whose homes were burned by the British during the American Revolution. It includes present day Huron, Erie, Ottawa, and Ashland Counties in Ohio.
My post includes a short synopsis of "History of the Fire-Lands" and the Table of Contents with links to the free on-line book's histories, biographies and illustrations of the pioneers and their families.
I invite you to check out this interesting biography of Harvey and Emily Doolittle and other pioneers of the Firelands.

What I have not found as yet are burial sites, photos, etc. of that branch.

I would love to be able to fill in more. I have some of the census records, cw service records and slave censuses, (Mississippi branch-(Rodger William Branch in Newton)

In return, I will gladly help with any info I have that may be of use to you.

Thanks!!

Sharon Heist

Doolittle, Annie M ~ b.1862 Cheshire - d. 1938 ~ m. John S. Foote

Searching for information and reletives of Annie M. DOOLITTLE, b. 26 Oct 1862 in Cheshire, CT. I am fairly certain her parents were Oliver Taylor DOOLITTLE and Alice G. ISBELL.

She m. John S. Foote 8 Set 1885 in New Haven, CT. They lived in PA in 1900. Annie was a widow in 1910, living in Philadelphia.

They had five children - Andrew b. 1887, Anna b. 1889, Alice b. 1893, Robert b. 1894, Eleanor b. 1897.

On 13 Apr 1931, she married her second cousin, Thomas E. Doolittle, at Riverside, CA. She and Thomas listed their address in Nov 1931 as New York City.

She died in 1938 and Thomas buried her in a Doolittle plot in the St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Cheshire, CT. Thomas died later that year and is buried beside his first wife in the North Platte, (Nebraska) Cememtery.

Thomas, my great-grandfather, was a widowed farmer from North Platte, NE. It appears that the two families had kept in contact with each other over the years. Unfortunately, Thomas's family didn't think Thomas needed to get married again, never welcoming Annie into the family, or even mentioning to decendants that Thomas had ever remarried.

I would love to learn more about Annie, and especially contact any of her decendants.

In researching my Doolittle tree, two things are very clear, we have a LARGE number of Doolittles that served in every war since Colonial days. We have a similarly large number of ministers, some very influential ones as well.

I have begun tracking these two pieces of Doolittle History, and would love to hear anecdotes, see pictures, etc. of family members from the Colonies through the Civil War. (The Civil War alone has hundreds-on both sides) With the hope of compiling the information. I will gladly credit any information shared about your cousins/fathers/uncles, etc. It's the stories that I want really to set down, for all of us to share. THANKS!!

Sharon Heist

Just wanted to report that we have had some success in finding Abrahamson's descendants with Klara Elisabeth Abrahamson marrying Louis Gerdin in Minneapolis. However, found descendants from only one of her many children.
~ Marilyn
I don't know a whole bunch about them. My mom said that my grandma didn't speak much about her parents. Prob to hard for her! All I know is that my grandmother, Jennie Bushey(Maiden name Doolittle) was born in Livelong, Saskatchewan. So im thinking that they lived there for a while, but then moved to edgerton, AB. Like I said not 100% sure on that, but thats the jist i got from it.
Not sure if this helps at all, but my gradmothers siblings, were Joyce, Anne, Margaret, Ruby, Larry, and im pretty sure she had at least one more brother, but he had past away in the car accident with her parents. She might of had more siblings those are just the ones I have met and know about.
You never think when someone is alive to ask them all these questions, its only once they pass, you get curious!!

David DOOLITTLE and wife Electa BAKER of Kenosha WI

I have David DOOLITTLE in NY census for 1830, then in Wisconsin state census and 1840, 1850 & 1860. In 1860 he is listed as 63 (b 1796) born in MA (not NY or WI). Children listed with him are son H.H. born 1834 NY; Caroline born 1838 WI (last name Button married Theodore Button); her children: Adelaide Button b 1855, Emma Button b 1857 and Henry Button b 1860. In WI 1850 census, David and Electa are listed with Henry and Caroline and children Oscar WOODBRIDGE 11 and Mary J. WOODBRIDGE 9. I believe these children are the children of their daughter Jane and her husband Henry WOODBRIDGE.
I would like to know if these were the only children of David and Electa. And exactly where David died.
Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle obit

The Californian Salinas, California

Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle
FLORENCE, MONTANA

Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle, 88, left us Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, for the great tennis court in the sky.
He was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Milford, Conn., to parents, Trubee Joseph and Helen Clark Doolittle.
Dr. Charles Doolittle graduated from Brown University in 1942 with a degree in business. He entered WW2 as a Naval Lieutenant and spent the next three years on the USS Ajax. His daily diary notes every letter he got, as well of thousands of cribbage scores.
Dr Doo, as he was fondly called, married Nancy Dell Gibbons in 1947 and attended Columbia University, graduating in 1951 as a general practitioner of medicine. He was the proud father of four sons, James Bryan (Coleen), David Charles (Victoria), Steven Leroy (Paula) and Mark Thomas (Liz) Doolittle as well as nine grandchildren, Spencer, Gina, Elizabeth, Meg, Bryan, Tyler, Riley, Natalie and Willy and one great-grandchild.
In 1955, while on his way to his Residency in Modesto, his tired family stopped in Salinas to take a break. The local doctors talked him in to staying and he went on to become one of the pioneers of Salinas medical care, delivering over 3000 babies, performing hundreds of surgeries and caring for thousands of patients' in his 40 year medical career. During his early days as Dr. Doo, he was proud to call himself the volunteer "Railroad Doctor", waiting at the Salinas train station at all hours and in all weather to care for sick passengers as they traveled across California.
Dr. Doo was the Monterey County Tennis Champion for years, his wing span was deadly and legendary, he was a Charter member of Corral de Tierra Country Club and Chamisal Tennis Club and long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Salinas Rotary, among many other community service commitments.
His thespian talents and his memorable voice, in hundreds of performances of local community theater will always be remembered, including "Arsenic and Old Lace", "Guys and Dolls", "Man of La Mancha", three seasons with Brace Bridge, Yosemite and at 88 years of age, a performance in " It's A Wonderful Life".
Retiring in 1993 to Arizona with his second wife, Becky Doolittle, who lost a battle with lung cancer in 1998 and then to Montana, where he enjoyed his final days in the Big Sky County with his wife, Mary Reed Doolittle, many thanks for her loving care.
Survivors: In addition to four sons, nine grandchildren and a great grandchild, he leaves behind hundreds of friends and former patients. In our grief, we hear his voice echoing his favorite advice: "This too shall pass".
Services: At Dr. Doo's request, no services will be held.
Memorials: Donations in his honor to Hartnell's Western Stage would be greatly appreciated.
