Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle obit

The Californian Salinas, California

Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle
FLORENCE, MONTANA

Dr. Charles Lewis Doolittle, 88, left us Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, for the great tennis court in the sky.
He was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Milford, Conn., to parents, Trubee Joseph and Helen Clark Doolittle.
Dr. Charles Doolittle graduated from Brown University in 1942 with a degree in business. He entered WW2 as a Naval Lieutenant and spent the next three years on the USS Ajax. His daily diary notes every letter he got, as well of thousands of cribbage scores.
Dr Doo, as he was fondly called, married Nancy Dell Gibbons in 1947 and attended Columbia University, graduating in 1951 as a general practitioner of medicine. He was the proud father of four sons, James Bryan (Coleen), David Charles (Victoria), Steven Leroy (Paula) and Mark Thomas (Liz) Doolittle as well as nine grandchildren, Spencer, Gina, Elizabeth, Meg, Bryan, Tyler, Riley, Natalie and Willy and one great-grandchild.
In 1955, while on his way to his Residency in Modesto, his tired family stopped in Salinas to take a break. The local doctors talked him in to staying and he went on to become one of the pioneers of Salinas medical care, delivering over 3000 babies, performing hundreds of surgeries and caring for thousands of patients' in his 40 year medical career. During his early days as Dr. Doo, he was proud to call himself the volunteer "Railroad Doctor", waiting at the Salinas train station at all hours and in all weather to care for sick passengers as they traveled across California.
Dr. Doo was the Monterey County Tennis Champion for years, his wing span was deadly and legendary, he was a Charter member of Corral de Tierra Country Club and Chamisal Tennis Club and long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Salinas Rotary, among many other community service commitments.
His thespian talents and his memorable voice, in hundreds of performances of local community theater will always be remembered, including "Arsenic and Old Lace", "Guys and Dolls", "Man of La Mancha", three seasons with Brace Bridge, Yosemite and at 88 years of age, a performance in " It's A Wonderful Life".
Retiring in 1993 to Arizona with his second wife, Becky Doolittle, who lost a battle with lung cancer in 1998 and then to Montana, where he enjoyed his final days in the Big Sky County with his wife, Mary Reed Doolittle, many thanks for her loving care.
Survivors: In addition to four sons, nine grandchildren and a great grandchild, he leaves behind hundreds of friends and former patients. In our grief, we hear his voice echoing his favorite advice: "This too shall pass".
Services: At Dr. Doo's request, no services will be held.
Memorials: Donations in his honor to Hartnell's Western Stage would be greatly appreciated.
Recently discovered the Doolittle/Finger family while researching my husband's ancestry. Eva married Henry Luther Finger. They are my husband's ggrandparents. You can find a copy of each of their death certificates at Georgia's Virtual Vault on the Ga Archives website. Eva's mother is listed as Cynthia Ryals. If you have any information on Eva and Luther I would love to hear from you. I am especially interested in their daughter, Winnie, my husband's grandmother. Thanks.

Does anyone have proof of her parents? I am 90% sure they are Jonathan Doolittle and Lydia Williams (who were in Middletown, CT until about 1760 and were then lost track of). But I only have circumstantial evidence.

History of Bradford Co., Craft, p.102 : "Feb. 2, 1774, he (John Franklin) married Lydia Doolittle (born in Canaan, CT, Aug 13, 1751)"

"Pioneer & Patriot families of Bradford County, PA." by Heverly, Clement Ferdinand. p.173-182:
She died of smallpox in Windsor, Berks County, Nov. 17, 1778, leaving 3 small children.
The girls in the family are hard to trace because they take their husband's name. They all lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota for a while.

I am looking for descendants of:
1. Fredrika Karolina, born 1855 married Andrew (Anders?)
Do you know of any connection with my David DOOLITTLE, son of Jared DOOLITTLE? David and his brother Seth settled in Kenosha County, WI before 1850. His wife Electa Baker Doolittle and daughter Carolina Doolittle Button Rieter were living in Martin County before the Rieters moved first to South Dakota, then to Tacoma WA. At that time widow Electa moved to CA to live with a great-grand daughter Mrs. Edith Scott Waters.
I assume David died in WI before they moved, he was born 18 Nov 1796 in MA according to the census entry to Jared and Abigail Bullen.

In the 1900 census, he was in Eden Twp., Payne Co., OK. Mother's name there clearly listed as Edna, and evidently the same woman listed in 1885 with a different name. One of these was probably a middle name. See attached.

He evidentally stayed in upstate NY. Born in Oswego in 1803 and died in New Haven, NY in 1863. Would appreciate any info you have about Jared or his father Philemon. Somewhere I saw that Philemon was a preacher but I've been unable to confirm that.

All I know is that her mom and Dad were Henry and Vera Doolittle and they died around 1953 in a car accident by Edgerton Alberta. Her moms maiden name was Abrahamson and her grandmother came to the states from Sweden. Other than that I know nothing, if anyone knows anything about either Henry or Vera I would really appreciate it!! I would love to be able to tell my mom and my aunts about there grandparents that they never got the chance to meet!

Hi Dave!

After doing some more research, it turns out that our Luthers were NOT the same! Now I am trying to see if it is possible to connect my Luther to yours.

What I have found is that my Luther is the son of Martin Luther Doolittle and Eliza (Ainsworth) Doolittle. Martin Luther is the son of Isaac Doolittle and Betsey (Pickett) Doolittle. Have any of these got connections to your group?

The connection between this Luther's family and mine, if you're interested... Luther had a sister named Rosetta, who married Frank Moat. Frank and Rosetta are my great-great grandparents.

Thanks again for all your help!

Since my last posting, I have found a little more information on George but still wanting more info.

"George Washington Doolittle and Sarah Speaks Doolittle are both buried in Schoolfield Cemetery. Both were buried on 30 June 1965 as a reinterment by Swicegood Funeral Home. The funeral home records could give the info of their earlier burial sites. The stone dates for GW are 1846-1932. He was aged 79 at death and Sarah was 84 at death. They are in section B/1214 and were burials A53 and A54. Others buried in that section have surname Bray and Graham."

I believe that “C.K. Doolittle” may actually have been Clarence S. Doolittle, born Nov 14, 1854, who married Jennie Jones.

Clarence was the son of Joseph Newton Doolittle (b 1 May 1830; d. Oct 1891) and Eliza Logan (b 25 Dec 1827; d 14 Aug 1870). Joseph and Eliza were m. 23 Dec 1852. After Eliza died, Joseph m2 8 Jan 1871 Mina Jeannette Rowley (b 1 Nov 1848; descendant of Joseph Reed).

Joseph Newton Doolittle was the son of Joseph and Maria (Nash) Doolittle.

Maria Nash was the daughter of Joseph and Betsey (Reed) Nash, b. 7 Nov 1807; d. 10 Apr 1882; m 20 Oct 1828 in Murray, NY, Joseph Doolittle. Children:
Joseph Newton Doolittle, b in Murray, NY 1 May 1830; d. Oct 1891; m Eliza Loganof Green Co., TN in Rock Co., Wis., Dec. 23, 1852.
Adora Maria Doolittle, b in Troy, O., May 13, 1832; m. in Rock Co., Wis., Oct 1 1876 Samuel Cadwallader.
Elvira J. Donaldson.
Hopkins Wesley Doolittle, b in Troy, O., Jan 31, 1840; m. Oct 12, 1861, Cora S. Speelman

Joseph Doolittle (husband of Maria Nash) was supposedly the son of Hopkin Doolittle and Mary Crout

and Hopkin Doolittle was supposedly the son of Joseph Doolittle and Abigail Rockwell

and Joseph Doolittle was supposedly the son of Joseph Doolittle and Rachel Cole (others say his mother was Martha Hitchcock)

Joseph Doolittle was supposedly the son of Abraham Doolittle and Elizabeth Thorpe
(or of Daniel Doolittle and Hannah Cornwall)
I have a Luther Doolittle whos came from Pownal, VT to Nelson, NY (then a part of or near Cazenovia.) I have a little history of the town which mentions Luther as one of it's founders. Another founder mentioned is a Jesse Clark.
Your photo appears to be My Luther, but he had a son Luther who was my 3rd Great Grand Uncle. He was born in 1881 and died in 1886 and might be your guy.
We're not s'posed to send attachments here, but if you'd like a copy of the History mentioned I,d be happy to send it to your own Email address.
Dave B
