Hi

Many thanks for your two most recent messages. I will set out the family tree and send it to you to see whether we match. When your Mum refers to Mary as her father's first cousin, is this Mary Brown, nee Doonan, or her daughter Bridget Brown, who was also known as Mary?

Best regards

Frank

I have just seen this message. My father was a John Connolly, who visited his great Aunt, Bridget BROWN, in New York in 1952. Her mother was a Mary DOONAN born about 1845 in Cavan and died as Mary BROWN in Scotland in 1912. Bridget BROWN gave my Dad a DOONAN family tree, which he recorded at the time. Part of the family tree has a John DOONAN, no spouse mentioned, with 5 children, Eddie, Schemus, Susie and 2 unnamed girls, who married and went to live in London. I wonder whether the John, Susie and Bill you mention are the same people? What do you think?

I have more on the DOONAN family but with a lot of detail missing. I look forward to hearing from you.

Frank Connolly
Suffolk
England

The William Doonan that you are referring to as living in Wisconsin in 1920 is NOT my William Doonan. My William Doonan committed suicide on 13 Oct 1913 in New Liskeard, Ontario, Canada.

Since originally posting my message, I have since found out that William's father was John who was the original immigrant from Ireland and died in Canada. William's mother is Prudence Morton.

Lovely story Alan! I don't know if Bill is related to any of my Doonans, it seems they must all be linked at some point. I see the plot for a film .................

Andrea

Hi All,

I was looking for some information on Bill Doonan after reading an article in last Sunday's South China Morning Post. Curiousity got the better of me as its seem's Bill has a fascinating story and was hoping wiki pages might have some information but when I typed his name in I got this page. Here is the article and maybe yee should check out the book that is mentioned in it

Regards

Alan

It can get lonely living as an expat in Hong Kong. But one way to assuage the pangs of homesickness is to play a sport that reminds you of your roots and which can be an impetus for new social activity in the city.
For the Irish among us, Gaelic football fits that bill to a tee. The ancient team sport is not just a vigorous form of competition, but also a salvation - embodying who you are and where you come from. It always does the heart good.
Gaelic football - and hurling - are two of the most exciting, stirring and vibrant sports on the planet. Once they're in your blood you can sorely miss them so it's not surprising that, for Irish communities abroad, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which governs both games, can be like a second home.
Wherever you are in the world, you'll find a GAA club. For many it's the difference between settling in a foreign country or boarding the first plane home. And no-one has summed up the GAA influence overseas better than the late Brendan O'hEithir in his book Over The Bar.
"The GAA," said O'hEithir, "is really all about Bill Doonan heading for Monte Casino."
He tells the story of Doonan, who would win an All-Ireland medal [the pinnacle of Gaelic football] playing for Cavan in the Polo Grounds in New York four years later, but who was then a British Army private and a radio operator. Doonan disappeared from his company in the course of the final and vital push on Monte Casino in 1943. A search was mounted and Doonan was located up a tree with his radio, on the side of a steep hill. He seemed to be in some sort of a trance.
"And in a way," says O'hEithir, "he was, for after much effort and experimentation Private Doonan had eventually found the commentary on the second half of the All-Ireland football final between Roscommon and Cavan from Croke Park in Dublin. If anyone ever asks you what the GAA is all about, just think of Bill Doonan, the wanderer on the side of that hill in the middle of a world war ... at home."
In recent years some of that deep passion for the game has rubbed off on many new converts to the sport. Gaelic football has taken off in Hong Kong with men and women of all nationalities now playing.
Sally Wong So-kam is a case in point. She has been playing for five years and can't get enough of it.
"I used to play soccer and basketball, but I love playing Gaelic football now. It's a very intense contact sport but it's also great fun. I've made lots of friends and played overseas for Hong Kong as well," Wong said.
Wong, a physical education department head at Kiangsu Chekiang College International School, was so taken with the sport she has introduced a Gaelic football programme to her school curriculum.
"My students love it. They all come from different backgrounds and enjoy playing. The skills are not that difficult to learn and once they get the basics there's no stopping them," she said.
In June, local primary schools competed in the inaugural Hong Kong GAA Primary School Gaelic Football Championships at King's Park, Jordan, with over 70 boys and girls of all backgrounds playing. There were also teams from Discovery College, Discovery Bay International School, and French International School. Coaching sessions and clinics have taken place in Renaissance College, Singapore International School and Beacon Hill School as well.
Gaelic football has been described as a mix between soccer and rugby. However in sporting terms, Aussie Rules is its closest relation, the main difference being a round ball is used in Gaelic football instead of an oval one.
By far the most successful Gaelic football team in Ireland are Kerry, having won a record 36 All-Ireland titles. Irish playwright John B. Keane once said: "A Kerry footballer with an inferiority complex is one who thinks he's just as good as everybody else."
It's no coincidence then that Hong Kong GAA chairman Shane Harmon is from there, but for once Kerry's fortunes are not a priority for him.
"Gaelic football here is played by all levels of players, from elite athletes to casual couch potatoes, and we're delighted we've been able to attract Hong Kong locals to play the game too," Harmon said. "The feather in the cap for us is the young people taking up the game through the schools programme. It shows just how far we have come."
This progression comes to another stage of fruition next weekend when Hong Kong stages the 2010 Asian Gaelic Games at King's Park. More than 800 players are confirmed with teams from across Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Qatar, Dubai and Abu Dhabi plus several teams from China. And, for the first time, India will also be represented - by the Wolfhounds from New Delhi.
Hong Kong are holders of the Derek Brady Cup (for the men's competition) and will be chasing a record fifth successive victory, while the Singapore Gaelic Lions are the women's titleholders. The youth competitions will see almost 200 boys and girls from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and hosts Hong Kong playing in a series of games. There will also be a competition showcasing the skills of hurling, a stick-and-ball game which has been best described as "hockey on speed", although that hardly does it justice.
"We believe Gaelic football is a game for all, and we look forward to hosting the Asian Gaelic Games so we can showcase this belief through men's, women's and children's football," Harmon said.
The fact that there are only three Irish girls among the 36 players who make up Hong Kong's three women's teams, illustrates how it is no longer just a game played solely by Irish people abroad.
There will also be a series of other events organised by the Irish community to add to the festival atmosphere.
The St Patrick's Society of Hong Kong are hosting a private box at the Happy Valley races on Thursday when the Ireland Trophy will be the big race on the card, while on Friday the Asia Pacific Irish Business Forum will be held at the Langham Hotel, Kowloon.

My name is Michael Doonan. My father was Kenneth Doonan son of Charles Doonan. Charles father was William Doonan who came to Iowa and settled in southern Minnesota. William was one of the brothers to move here. He married Elizibeth Williamson. When my dad was alive he came out to visit me in Colorado and made a trip down to Pueblo to see the relatives he knew there. Been unable to go back any further than John Doonan.

Thanks for the information - but the William Doonan that you describe is NOT the same man as the William Doonan that I describe. They are two different men. My William Doonan died in Canada in 1913 by suicide and was never in Wisconsin.

William (1846) was living with a first cousin Hugh Doonan
in Barron County, Wisconsin. (1886-1900) William was working in a lumber camp in Superior, Wisconsin in 1900. He was reporedly killed by a train. His remains were shipped to my great grandfather Hugh Doonan...But it turned out to be the wrong man who was buried as William. Thw dead man was actually William Dunnigan from Canada...William Doonan
(the real one) came home to the farm two weeks after the funeral and all hell broke loose...He is still officially listed as dead in 1900 and William changed his first name to Andrew. Last census(1920) he was living in Merrill, Wisconsin with a wife named Kathryn

I have brothers Bernard and Patrick Doonan, farmers in Corlespratton and Aughanock respectively with Terrence as a possible father - the names of the children are very similar throughout the families and wondered if there was a connection.

Andrea

I am researching a doonan line from mohill area in leitrim. my great great gradmother was a catherine doonan. she was married to a michale reynolds in 1857. a michael doonan and anna doonan were witness to her daughter annie's baptism in 1858. could this be your michael doonan and ann heslin? i suppose it's also possible michael and anna were brother and sister and not husband and wife. the records don't make it clear. do you have any other info on your doonan search you could share with me?.

Saw an old posting re: Doonans. We are from the James Doonan + Annie Mitchell connection. My grandmother (86yo) is Annie Mitchell's niece. We know lots about that connection and would be happy to provide info. There were lots of Doonans in NJ in the 1960's and 70's.
We are trying to get more on Annie Mitchell's Mom and Dad, James Mitchell (1868-1915) and Mary Gunn (1874-1943) and their arrival in the US. We are hoping that some of the Doonan's may have some knowledge of their ggrandmother.
Any thoughts??????
Thank you ,
Nicole Wenzel

Hi there,
I am so happy to find this thread !
My grandmother, Mary Cromwell (nee Mitchell) is Anna Mitchell's niece. We have plenty of info on James and Anna Doonan and their children as well as ,obviously, the Mitchells. I was wondering if you had any info on Anna's parents, James Mitchell and Mary nee Gunn or any of the Gunn cousins? Love to share whatever we know.
Thanks,
nicole

Hello Rebecca, Could you tell me if the name Doonan was spelt different at one time, as I find that this name is not a common name as far as I have notice. I know it is a Irish name but where would it be found as a common name?
It has me a little stirred! It is in some my Reid research that I need to know. Would appreciate any help on this. Thank you

Doonan

Hi Sherri - I don't think I've come across the name Doonan before, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it spelled many different ways. It would probably be spelled however the person writing it heard it phonetically or however they thought it might be spelled. In transcribing parish records, I've found peoples' names spelled differently by the same priest (at least as far as I can tell by the handwriting). As far as what possible spelling variations may be, I'm not real sure.

A quick search turned up the following:

The table below shows the number of Doonan households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64.
Cavan 7
Down 2
Fermanagh 33
Kilkenny 1
Laois 1
Leitrim 14
Longford 5
Mayo 3
Meath 3
Monaghan 10
Roscommon 1

SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN
Doonan	fairly rare: S Ulster, Meath, Sligo-Leitrim. Ir. Ó Dúnáin, properly Ó Donnáin. MIF.
Ó Dúnáin	Doonan: cuíosach annamh: deisceart Uladh, an Mhí, Sligeach-Liatroim. Airchinnigh i bhFear Manach, tráth. Meascadh éigin le Ó Donnáin, q.v. MIF.

Variants and all-Ireland totals
SURNAME	TOTAL
Doonan	80
Doonen	2
Variants which are not listed in the household survey.
SURNAME
Ó Dúnáin

Anyway - looks like Fermanagh would be where I would start searching

Good Luck
Rebecca

Jesse:

If they are from Fermanagh, then there is certainly some kind of relation, though it could be many, many generations apart. Any Doonans from Fermanagh will be related to some degree.

One of these days I may start a DNA project. Anyway, read the paper and let me know if you have any questions.

Shane

Shane,
I will have to check into this further. It looks like you have done some in-depth research into the Doonan line. My great grandmother was a Doonan; her name was Eliza Ann Doonan. Her father was James Doonan and mother Margaret Doyle or Boyle, which lived in Illinois. I don't know if there are any relations between them and your line but they did come from Fermanganauh.

Jesse Hess
