I have found some updated info. on my Great-grandfather Patrick J. Dooner from county Rosscommon Ireland, but could still use some fresh leads. Let me know if anything rings abell for anyone, please. Happy hunting to all!
Patrick J. Dooner born around 1878 -1880 in or near county Rosscommon Ireland. Patrick had several sisters; Bridget, Delia, Martha, Sarah and Helen. He Immigrated to New York in 1896 at age 16-17. Fought in the Spanish -American War for the U.S. army. Married Margaret "Mary" Connelly in New York in 1903. She immigrated from Ireland in 1901. Patrick and Mary lived in Manhattan New York, they had several children; Helen d.@1927, Joseph d. @1940's, Margaret(aka. Mary), Theresa (my grandmother), Catherine, Thomas, Anna, and Bernard. They lived in the Harlem area on Morningside Ave. for many years. Sarah married a man named Barret and lived nearby too. Mary died of TB in 1926 and the younger children including my grandmother were sent to St. Agatha's children's home in Nanuet NY for several years.
Mary Connelly was born @1880 in Ireland and spent her youth living with an Aunt in Wales, therefore she always considered herself Welsh, she spoke Welsh, not Irish. She may have been a teacher as well.
Patrick remained in New York and died in the 1950's. He received an army pension but I can't find any military records yet. I'm told there is still family living in Rosscommon. Any of this look familiar to anyone please helpme find Patrick or Mary's family. Thanks. Good luck to all.
