My parents emigrated to Australia in Oct 1952. The books you refer to are possibly the same as mine. I have an update including my eldest son richard in 1987. I think they were the first "Dopheide" to arrive in Australia from Holland. My fathers family is from Groningen. The book reers to the family as O'ppede also d'oppede and goes back to 640 AD. A province of Frankreich is also referred to. Unfortunately i cannot speak or read dutch or german but this is what I can glean from the names. The pope bit I think refers to Pope Paul iv in 1552 ad. A fnch province of AIX is also worth looking at. my email is classic1@momentuminternet.com.au. Regards Richard

I am of of only 1 or 2 Dopheides in New Zealand.
My parents emigrated to New Zealand from Hilversum in 1953 and established themselves here.
I have atwo very thich books in high Gerain which details the complete story from Charlemange???? to Jean Maynier to recent times.
My understanding was that jean Maynier was given the Baroncy title by one of the popes (not sure which one) as a reward for shelting said pope of earlier pope when the vatican was sacked. Does this ring any bells?
I cannot read the high german and am wondering whether there is an English translation somewhere.
Can anyone help??
My father was Albert Frank Dopheide, he had a brother name Anton (Tony) his wife was Dorothy Mary Camphell they were married April 1, 1929. They were Divorced. They had 2 girls Betty Jo, and Shirley Marie. Dorothy and the girls moved to texas after the divorce. There was a family of Dopheide's that also lived in Quincy, I don't know if they were apart of our family or not. My dad's father's name was Ignatz Johann Bernhard and his mother was Anna Francis Steinkamp Dopheide.

I am an English writer based in Provence, currently writing about the village of Oppède-le-Vieux. In the 16th century the Baron of Oppède, Jean Maynier, led a bloody campaign to exterminate the Vaudois, a Protestant sect. It is said that he had a son, also named Jean, who emigrated to Germany where he took the name Dopheide (presumably stemming from the French "d'Oppède"). If anyone has any information connected with this, I should be very happy to hear.
Best regards,
Chris Mosey
