Simon Dorcas did not come from PA. He was born in Georgia before the Civil War. His mother's family owned a plantation with slaves. His mother made him work alongside the slaves and he objected and ran away when he was 10 or 11. Census records show his birth year between 1847-1850, so he may have run away to join the army...don't know which side! Plantation was rumored to have been in DeKalb County GA...still researching that area. Census also states Simon's father born in Wales and mother born in Georgia. No clue as to mother's maiden name. His wife Laura Wanamaker was born in PA, they were divorced as some point after Charles Edgar Dorcas was born, and she remarried a Magee. .
