The Doremus Family (Henry & Capt. Thomas) housed George Washington and Alexander Hamilton during the Revolution War. (June 25/26/27 1780
The house (called the Henry Doremus House) is one of the best preserved Dutch Stone houses in NJ. The house was never plumbed, electified or modernized. We are in the process of restoring it and will open it as a museum.
The Doremus Tavern stood across the street. Its license was held in the name of John, Cornelius and Goline Doremus.
George stopped on his way back after the battle of Springfield in Towaco, NJ (then called Pequannock NJ). Towaco is now part of Montville Twp.
Troops (lots of them) stayed at the tavern and in the fields. George was housed in the house across the street.
The visit is documented by a payment to Mrs Doremus for $40 in Washington's expenses.
in 1781Rochambeau marched by on his way to/from the last battle of the Revolution War. He had about 3/4,000 people with him. They camped in the orchard then.
Is anyone a descendant of this family?
We want to invite them to an event when we restore the house.
We also would like to find the Doremus Tavern Sign.
Anyone know its whereabouts?
Thank you,
Kathy Fisher
