We now have restored the Dutch Stone Henry Doremus House - his brother Captain Thomas Doremus lived in the house after Henry. The house was built circa 1760.

Inviting all Doremus's and descendants of the Doremus family !!!

We will celebrate and have the ribbon cutting and official opening of the Henry Doremus House in Montville Township, NJ (Towaco section) Sunday, April 26.

Address is 490 Main or also known as Rt 202, Towaco, NJ 07082

The Henry Doremus House has recently been restored thanks to the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund. And it looks fantastic!!

We want all Doremus's and descendants of the Doremus family to come April 26 for a photo. Just think how neat it would be to have all these Doremus's in the yard surrounding the house.

We will have you sign in so we know who is who for the historic record.

Please come at 8:30 am and the group photo will be taken about 9:30am.
The ribbon cutting ceremony is at 10am
Tours of the house will be available after the ceremony.
The Outwater Militia will be there providing reenactment marches, camps, weaving, artillery, and clothing demostrations.

For questions please email kagofish@yahoo.com or call 973 394-0554

The Henry Doremus House is a circa 1760 Dutch American stone house that is significant for many reasons - see below

Architecturally
Original Dutch architecture with significant original architectural fabric
Jambless fireplace
House not altered or modernized
Never plumbed, electrified or heated

Historically
Where General George Washington and Alexander Hamilton stayed June 25-27, 1780
General Washington was accompanied by 40 aides and 2,000 troops while retreating after the Battle of Springfield
General Washington’s expense account notes a $40 payment to Mrs. Doremus of Pequannoc.
I have the Images of Closter & Alpine Book and there is a photo of the house at 269 Piermont Road it states "The David D. Doremus House, 269 Piermont Road. An earlier Greek Revival-style vernacular house in town was erected by carpenter David Doremus c. 1843. In addition to the characteristic features of this house type with entrance door, frieze and eyebrow windows, he also built a one-bay Greek Revival portico with a pediment. Doremus was a chosedn freeholder (1851-1853) in old harrington township. I have another older town book and will see if thre is any info in there, if you know where they are buried (and if it's close by) I can take a photo pf the grave for you if you would like

Obituary appears in "The Tishomingo News" 6 September 1905 Johnston County, Indian Territory, Oklahoma

Mrs. Valeria Ada Doremus was born March 3rd 1861 and died August 31st 1905 aged 44 years. Her illness was long and severe but patiently and bravely borne in faith. She united with the Episcopal Church in early life, was a quiet, consistent Christina. In the home she was devoted to her family and was faithful in her duties. She leaves a husband and a daughter. Services were held at the cemetery conducted by Rev. Thomas Carey of the Presbyterian Church. Many friends assembled to pay their last respects to the memory of the departed. The singing was appropriate and sweet and after a short address the remains were laid to their last resting place.

Hi,
My gg grandmother was Susan Reaumur Currey (nee Doremus) (1835 - 1908), who emigrated to Australia with her husband. According to some family research I have, her father was David (Davit) George (Joris) Doremus, b. 1798. His father was Joris Doremus (1751? or 1757?, who all lived around New Jersey / New York in the USA. The information I have seems to be little scrambled - does anyone have a definitive line that clarifies birthdates, dates of deaths / marriages for the above two ancestors.
Many thanks, in anticipation.

Her father was Henry Miller but I cannot find his first wife who would be Catherine's mother by date of Catherine's birth. I have his second wife.
Of course, I have the Doremus line to way back. The Miller line is well recorded also back beyond Henry. I do not have the desc. of your line, but only of the Doremus line down to my mother.

THE WOMAN WHO SHOT
An even better known representative of American womanhood sat near me at the Westmoreland hotel athe other day eating a bowl of soup. I knew the moment I looked at her that she was a woman with a history; no longer young her face bore traces of suffering which the powder which had been brushed over her could not conceal. A gray veil wich trimmed her round hat was brought down in graceful folds either side her face; slim, tall, and sensitive, with an air of morbid melancholy and acute sensibility, this woman was one that would be noticed anywhere. The waiters watched every movement she made, and DR.DOREMUS, who was eating his luncheon, appeared as intent upon her as though she were the object of a chemical analysis. After pushing the garcon his fees, she rose, and there was a rush among the waiters to open the door for her. "Who is it?" I asked. "That is Laura D. Fair, the woman who was tried for murder." I looked again and saw the woman in gray going slowly and alone across Union Square, which seemed all at once a sad and terrible place, full of the atmosphere of crime and suffering. Laura Fair has recently been lecturing at Chickering Hall on the subject of California, which must be a very wicked place indeed, if all she says is true. However, let us see what she will report of the East when she retraces her stops toward the Golden Gate.
N.Y.Cor. Pittsburgh Telegraph.
I have no other info on this ms.Fair, I just thought it was an interesting article for oct 9th of 1879. I would be interested in the whole story of her trial if anyone has it.
And since I live in wicked California I thought it quite a good article.

Myra Doremus and daughter Clarice E. Paterson, NY/NJ

I am trying to find any descendants of Myra (or Mira) Paterson nee Doremus b. about 1873, and her daughter Clarice E. Paterson b. about 1894. They can be found in the 1910 census living in Manhattan, NY. Myra is divorced and living with her parents, Cornelius b. 1843, and Clarissa O. Doremus b. 1844. Cornelius was President of a life insurance company by this time. The 1880 census has this family living in Union, Bergen, NJ. I believe that I'm a relative on the Paterson side, and would like, very much, to hear any information regarding this family.

Doremus Tavern & Revolutionary War

The Doremus Family (Henry & Capt. Thomas) housed George Washington and Alexander Hamilton during the Revolution War. (June 25/26/27 1780
The house (called the Henry Doremus House) is one of the best preserved Dutch Stone houses in NJ. The house was never plumbed, electified or modernized. We are in the process of restoring it and will open it as a museum.
The Doremus Tavern stood across the street. Its license was held in the name of John, Cornelius and Goline Doremus.
George stopped on his way back after the battle of Springfield in Towaco, NJ (then called Pequannock NJ). Towaco is now part of Montville Twp.
Troops (lots of them) stayed at the tavern and in the fields. George was housed in the house across the street.
The visit is documented by a payment to Mrs Doremus for $40 in Washington's expenses.
in 1781Rochambeau marched by on his way to/from the last battle of the Revolution War. He had about 3/4,000 people with him. They camped in the orchard then.

Is anyone a descendant of this family?
We want to invite them to an event when we restore the house.
We also would like to find the Doremus Tavern Sign.
Anyone know its whereabouts?

Thank you,

Kathy Fisher
Pres - Montville Twp Historical Society

In a book i have, printed in 1896, there is a footnote that reads.

His old tavern sign, having the effigy of an eagle, is preserved by his granddaughter, Mrs. Josiah P. Huntoon, of Patterson.

The footnote is in reference to the following.
Johannis kept a hotel at Doremustown. His will, dated March 14, 1821 was proved May 9, 1821: he is therin desvribed as "John Doremus, of Pequannock."
Let meknow what you find out!!
Kymberlee

Do you know where in Closter, I grew up there and so did my parents, great grandparents. I am more than happy to ask my grandparents if they were handed down any stories I would just need a street to go with the name

Lydia Doremus

My gggrandmother was Lydia Doremus (1811-1865, most probably at least her last years were spent in northern NJ) She was married to Elija C (or S) Smith (1809 or 1810 to 1875). My great grandmother was their daughter Louisa Caroline Smith (1844 - 1909). I have no information about any other children from this union. Any information you have about this branch of the Doremus family would be greatly appreciated.
