Hi again...

This is very interesing stuff. My husband's family have put the bug in our ear about indian status. Not sure if anything will come of it but it is worth a try. I found the information on Lawrence and brother John coming from Nova Scotia on this web site...archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NOVASCOTIA/1999-01/0915849834. It also suggested that there may have been a third Joseph. Thru my research I found a Joseph Dorey buried Sept.13, 1863 on Black Island. That information came from vital stats...Burials-Moreton's Harbour & Exploits 1801-1860.

Hope this helps...if you discover more please let me know...Looks like you could be a distant relation of my husband...he grew up in Fairbanks, NDB.

I have no info at all about Lawrence coming from Nova Scotia but would love any/all details on that.

There is a Joseph Dorey listed as owning a fishing room in Twillingate & vacinity in 1806, no connection made though on him being Lawrence's father, just speculating that possibility..

would you share the data on Nova Scotia connection??

Ira Dorey
Little Burnt Bay, NL
Dorey@nf.sympatico.ca
iradorey@gov.nl.ca

Hi,

In our family tree we have Rebecca Dorey -D.O.B. April 20,1887, Daughter of Henry Dorey and Mary Jane Anstey. So I guess Henry is Lawrence and Rebecca's son. Do you have any history on Lawrence Dorey. I have traced him to Nova Scotia around 1810 and coming to NL, Black Island, NDB, NL around 1839. Does that seem right to you. Henry Dorey is my husband's G.G.G.G. Grand-father. Do you have parents names for Lawrence...Found a page that suggests that there may be mi'qumaq blood lines

the "Dory/Dorey/Dore/Doree/Dorie" family (cause, let's face it, we're not good at keeping to one spelling) can also be found in Eastern Ontario. I'm Glengarrian and my family has been in the area for seven generations, before which we were in Les Cedars and St. Polycarpe in Quebec. It might be a place to look for records. I have several John Dorey/Doree/Dore names in my tree, but I can't say if any of mine are yours.

Hope this helps!
Doreys in Lancashire

hi,
For my A2 English Language coursework, i am comparing dialect change in Marshside, Lancashire. In the first of my recordings, being made of 3 fisherman in 1954 recalling a Fisherman's Strike of 1926, the three men make many references the 'Doreys' or 'Dooreys', who seem to oppose the strike, and perhaps hold some sort of authority over the Fisherman. They also reference a 'Tom Doorey', particularly.
Hence, i wondered if anyone knew of the social status of any Doreys in Lancashire at around that time, or if they held any authority there, traditionally.
I'm sure that this is a major tangent away from my actual coursework, but it interests me, so i'm following it up!
many thanks indeed,
Tom Fitzgerald

I saw your comments. My grandfather, Ruben Dorey, was from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His son, Francis Dorey, is my father.

I believe Ruben was born in 1898 in Canada. I recall he had a brother Nathan Dorey. There are many Doreys in Nova Scotia and your search will probably pick up there.

When I talk to my father (now 86)I'll ask him about his father's side of the family. His memory isn't so good, and Ruben Dorey emigrated to New York in 1928 "ish."

I'd love to see your string of the Doreys from 1799.

Hi Nichola
Thanks for your message. It seems that we may have a match. My only concern is that I am not sure that my GWD had any bro's or sisters. I have a pedigree chart taking the dorey name back as far as 1799 beyond that I have no information. My GWD married a Sarah Ann Ansell in 1905 and emmigrated (we believe)in or soon after 1910 leaving behind his wife and three chidren, my grandmother Sarah ann eventually remarried in 1934 (hence the different surname as my father changed his name in 1930 )Ihave been unsuccessfull in searching passenger lists to canada where he was supposed to have gone. Please keep in touch as I am sure we have a connection.
yours hopefully Frank J Parrick

Hi, I don't know how much you've found out since posting your message. My great grandfather ,Henry James Dorey, was the brother of William George. He was in the navy, and had 3 children. Their father was George Dorey (sometimes spelt Dore), and he was born around 1834 in Fareham, Hants. He ran a pub in Portsmouth called The Royal Oak in the 1860s and 70s. Their mother was called Eliza, she was from Botley, Hants. After she died George married Margaret from Greenock. In 1901, he was living in Portsmouth with Henry James and his family - including my grandmother. I have reached a complete stalemate going back any further, but I can help with Henry James's family. We always thought the family was originally from the Channel Islands.Any info would be gratefully received!

Thank you for replying. Any information would be great - my step-father has asked me to look into this family connection for him. His Great Aunt was Lily May Nash and the only info I have is on her marriage certificate to John Henry Dorey, and also the passenger list. Not much to go on. Apparently John Henry's father was also called John Dorey and he is listed on their marriage certificate as a 'labourer' for his occupation. My direct email is podnewton@hotmail.com if you have any information you can share. Thanks again. Claire

My last name is Dorey and apparently I have lots of relatives in Mahone Bay. My father was born in 1923 in that area, but moved to the U.S. at around age 5 with his parents. My father's Dad was Ruben (or Rueben) Dorey, born circa 1898 in Mahone Bay (Ruben married Emily Gracie; had two children, John (born 1921) and Francis (born 1923). Ruben had a brother named Nathan Dorey. I have the names of his other siblings at home in case you're interested. I have a feeling John Henry Dorey was a cousin of Ruben's.

Looking for information on John Henry Dorey born circa 1891. He was a Corporal with the Canadian Forces in the UK during WW1. He married Lily May Nash on 20th Feb 1919 in Farnham, Surrey, England. I assume he then returned to Canada - Lily is shown on the passenger list of the "Cedric" in September 1919. Her destination is listed as being Mahone Bay. It is possible that they moved to the US sometime after that.

Any info on John Henry, Lily or their descendants would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Claire
