we did find Frank and Lawrence Wall in a orphanage in Cleveland in 1900--also the marriage record listing says Joseph was born in Pittville,Penn--there is no Pittville,Pa. but Joseph Wall was born right near Pottsville,Pa.so i think you have something--and then you have his parents Robert Wall and Jane Dormer which is too much of a coincidence for it not to be the same Wall family.

Hi
I just recently figured out that my husband is probably descended from your Robert Wall. He descends thru Joseph who married Mary Mellen in Milwaukee WI in 1894. Joseph (or Frank as we know him) died in 1896 in WI and Mary moved back to Cleveland Ohio and was living with her parents in early 1900. Later in 1900 she was boarding with her mother and 2 of her siblings but her father was no longer in the household and her 2 boys, Frank, Jr. & Lawrence Patrick were in an orphanage. I found the connection to Robert and Jane Dormer from Joseph & Mary's marriage record.
Erin
My great grandmother was Jane Dormer Wall, born in Ireland around 1812. She immigrated to the East Norwegian section of Pottsville, in Schuykill County. She was married to Robert Wall in Ireland. He ran a hotel in that area. In one census record, a 15 year old girl named Julia Dormer is living with the Walls. There was also a John and Anne or Anna Dormer as godparents to one of Jane's grandchildren. The Walls moved to Philadelphia by 1880 and I believe some of the Dormers also lived in Philadelphia and may have worked as plumbers. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am trying to locate descendants of Henry Dormer, who was born in Buckinghamshire, England, approx 1797 and moved to Michigan, USA approx 1838-1840.  His wife was Anastasia (Stechia) Plant and they had the following children;
Edward, Lewis, Levi, Philip, Claretta, Martha & Abram. I believe they lived in Washtenaw and Calhoun, Michigan. Henry, I believe, died approximately 1870.

Any information would help.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Chris

Good to hear from you again. As you may of gathered I have picked up the research again.

Regarding the conflict it was over the two Charles Dormor/Dormer. It looks as if there were two born 1809 and 1811. I think these may have been the ones you were looking into a while ago.

Well going through my records I found this link and I think it clears it all up there were two Charles who's fathers were brothers. All the dates tie in let me know what you think (picture there as well)

http://www.adkins-family.org.uk/ps02/ps02_064.htm.

Regarding Jene Middleton I came across an entry in a parish record which could well be Jane it is two years out but very close. I need to send a pdf. to you but not sure how to.

Steve

Hi Steve - long time!

I wondered where you got the info that jane Middleton is the illig daughter of Phoebe? It certainly makes sense and has made me revisit our research.

What conflicts do you have, maybe we can sort them out between us?

Chris

Hi Linda

My name is Steve and I am a direct descendant in the family. I have spoken to Chris before. I have again trying to pick up the family tree keep leaving it and then having another go.

I have put together a short article on Jane Middleton. I think most of the fact are correct but makes interesting reading.

Please do let me know and thing you may feel incorrect.

Jane Middleton was born I believe in 1815 in East Hanney, Berkshire and may well have been the illegitimate daughter of Phoebe/Phebe Middleton.

Jane met Charles Dormor (Dormer) and married on the 25th December 1834.

They had one child whilst living in Hanney his name was William b1837.

Probably for work and the recent introduction of the railway they moved to Brentford where they had two further children Esther b1842 and David b 1837.

In 1849 there was another outbreak of Cholera ad Charles unfortunately caught the disease and died that year just two years after the birth of David.

Times must have been extremely hard with no breadwinner about and this led them going to the Abingdon Union Workhouse and in 1851 the census indicated that she was working as a washerwoman.

At some stage William met Sarah and got married. It is not clear how Jane moved back to Brentford but she died there in 1856 at the young age of 41.

The census of 1861 shows David actually living with his brother and Sarah so I assume he moved there when Jane died. Esther was more difficult to trace and I am not too sure if I found the right person but it looks as if she went into service.

I felt this was a hard sad short life for Jane.

Hi Lin

Its pretty remote in Lyford, when I went, I ended up driving into a farm! So watch out for that.

Do take a look at the Almshouses too. They are relevant to your research.

Finally, just near the church entrance is a stone for John Alder ... he is the child of Maria Alder and John Dormer but before their marriage.

Enjoy your searching,

Chris

This is from Bob but he asked that I post it for him due to difficulties he is having in doing so:
------------------------------------------------------------

Here is what I have for Israel DORMER

The 1841 Census has him listed in Lyford, with his age suggesting a birth date of 1828, born Berkshire, occupation Ag Labourer.

I did not find him in 1851, but in 1861 he is in Hammersmith, his place of birth as
Hanney, With him were
his wife Elizabeth A. DORMER, born 1831 Brentford,
his son Charles born 1855 in Brentford,
his son James born 1853 in Brentford,
his son Thomas born 1852 in Brentford

In the 1871 Census, son Charles is living with Stephen and Maria Higgs and described as nephew.

Also in the 1841 Census, there is an Israel DORMER listed in Lyford with the family of John and Susan ALDER. His birth year is 1828 and he is listed as Agricultural Labourer. It looks as if he was listed twice.

I have a note in my records that Israel and Elizabeth DORMER in the 1841 Census are neighbours of William and Sarah DORMER- is there a connection? I haven’t pursued the answer.

What follows now is the data I have found by going through the CD transcripts put out by the Oxford FHS for north Berks, and on which I have built up my wife’s family tree:

William DORMOR and Mary COX married 267 Dec 1758
The marriage register lists his age as 61. bachelor, farmer/ His age might suggest
why I can only find one offspring
Mary Cox is described as a widow of Tho Cox
Son John DARMAN	baptized 11 May 1760 Hanney

John DARMAN and Elizabeth TAYLOR married 28 Jul 1781
His burial is recorded on 11 May 1760 at Hanney

Son Charles DORMAN	baptized 18 Oct 1782 Lyford
His burial is recorded at Lyford on 22 Oct 1782
Daughter	Elizabeth DORMAN baptized 22 Feb 1784 Lyford
Son John DORMER baptized 10 Jun 1787 Lyford
His burial is recorded at Lyford on 18 Jul 1830
Daughter	Sarah DORMER baptized 31 Oct 1790 Lyford

Note – it is difficult to know if they were changing the surname as time passed or whether in an age of illiteracy the person writing up the records wrote what they thought the spelling should be. In my records I record what the transcripts show. (And of course the writing could have been so bad that this is the best the transcriber could make of it!)

John DORMER and Maria ALDER married 19 Nov 1810.
The banns were read on 21 and 28 Oct, 4 Nov in Hanney church. The record
shows Maria from Baulking. The same information has been copied into
the Lyford register. In both registers, the groom is shown as Joseph
DORMER.
The marriage of John DORMER and Maria ALDER is recorded in the Uffington
Register
His burial is recorded on 18 Jul 1830 - Lyford
There is a baptism of a Maria ALDER in Uffington on 20 Jul 1788, d of Thomas
and Mary (Watts), which is quite likely her.
Her burial is recorded on 16 Dec 1874 – Lyford. The burial record shows her
surname as DORMOR, still living at the Almshouses
The parish register for her baptism lists her as 2 weeks old
The 1841 census shows her living independently in Lyford.
She is shown as living in the Almshouses on the 1851 Census

Daught	er	Mary ALDER baptism 29 May 1808 Lyford
Note date prior to marriage and recorded as illegitimate daughter of
Maria
The register gives her birth date as 19 May 1808
Son Charles DORMAN baptism 9 Jun 1811 Lyford
Register gives birth date of 3 Jun 1811
Death Certificate gives date of death as 6 Aug 1849 in Brentford, cause
Cholera
Daughter	Hester DORMAN alias DORMOR	baptism 30 May 1813	Lyford
This is what the register shows
Lyford Register shows marriage to James Rutland, witness Charles
Dormor
Daughter	Harriet DORMAN baptism 20 Apr 1817	Lyford
Son Thomas DORMAN baptism 18 Sep 1819	Lyford
Date of death was 13 Sep 1819 in Lyford. Burial register uses surname of
DORMAN, 2 days old
Son David DORMAN baptism 27 Aug 1820	Lyford
Burial Register lists him as DORMER on 21 Jun 1891 in Lyford
Marriage to Mary Anne ALDWORTH. Charney Wooten, Berks copied
into Lyford from Hanney register. ALDER and ALDWORTH are
interchangeable surnames in my wife’s line, so he could have
married a relation
His surname is shown as DORMER on 1841 and 1851 censuses
Son Giles DORMAN baptism 24 Feb 1823	Lyford
Burial Lyford on 3 Jan 1898
Daughter	Maria DORMAN baptism 30 Jan 1826	Lyford
Son Israel DORMAN baptism 8 Jun 1828	Lyford

Charles DORMAN married Jane MIDDLETON on 25 Dec 1834
His burial is recorded on 6 Aug 1849 in Brentford
I have no details on Jane – one of my mysteries

Son John DORMOR baptized 26 Aug 1835	Lyford
Burial at Lyford on 7 Sep 1935 with surname of DORMOR
Son William DORMER baptized 20 Jan 1837	East Hanney
Death certificate has date of 28 Sep 1897 in Brentford
Marriage certificate shows occupation as labourer/ Marriage took place in
the Parish Church, Ealing, Middlesex – residence Old Brentford
Daughter	Esther DORMER baptized about 1842	Brentford
Son David DORMER baptized about 1846	Brentford

Charles and Jane are my wife’s great great grandparents.

This would be a good time for each of us to say who we are connected to and see what our relationships are. And if not to this line, what other clues are there to sort things out?

My wife’s ancestry goes on down through William DORMER of 1837.

Chris – your mail of April 13 refers to Maria born in 1826 who is Pat’s GG Grandmother, so we definitely have a connection there. I believe we have previously established that our wife and mine are connected through Charles and Jane Middleton.

Linda – re Elizabeth Fuller, I have added her to my tree as Israel’s wife. Do you have any other details on her? Birth date, where, date of marriage, etc.? If she is from the north Berks area, I will be happy to search for her and her antecedents there.

Your mail of April 16th mentioned a Mary DORMER in Wantage in 1786. I can’t find her on the Wantage transcript. Was this a baptismal date?

That is it for now.

Bob
------------------------------------------------------------

No, Linda, I don't see a direct connection, though I suspect if we could go back far enough there might be one.

Some years ago I trolled Ancestry census records and have this:
1861 census Hammersmith address - Charles Dormer s of Israel and Elizabeth A. Dormer, born 1855 Brentford. He is also listed in 1871 wuth a West Hanney address, same details, plus note that he was living with Steven and Maria Higgs and shown as newphew. Could this be the Maria Dormer, now married, of 1837 Lyford?

Also, I note his middle name of "Fuller" (which doesn't show in the census). Surnames as forenames always make me think there is a throw back to earlier generations, and I have the following:

The 1841 census for Wantage has this family listed on Grove Street: William Fuller b 1776 ag lab; Ann Fuller b 1781; Daniel Fuller b 1821; Ann Middleton b 1811; Eliza Middleton b 1836; Helen Middleton b 1840, all born in Berkshire.

My interest in this family was that Middleton is a female line that married into my wife's family. I've never pursued any of these further, but they may be of interest to you, and maybe to me some day.

I'm away from Thursday until the 29th, but if you have any further thoughts, send them along and I'll deal with them on my return.

Bob Burns

Hi Linda (Hi Bob - I think we have this one)

Regarding your charles fuller dormer - We have a marriage of Israel Dormer to Elizabeth Fuller on 27 July 1856 at St Bride Fleet Street (I have no idea why but it may have something to do with having children before they married) and would be the parents of Thomas , James and Charles all born in Brentford. Israel was from Hanney in Berks and Elizabeth Fuller from Brentford.

I think this is a good connection to your family and the Israel mentioned is the brother of my wifes GGG Grandfather Charles born in Lyford in 1811.

There is a Maria born in 1826 who is the sister of Israel and Charles in Lyford. Not sure where you arrived at a birth date for the Maria you mentioned.

Let me know if this works for you - we can go back a little more from here but lets agree this part first?

We are in Herts, UK, where are you based?

regards

Chris (hopefully the husband of your cousin!)

Hello Linda
I may be a disappointment again as I do not have the four people you list for the dates or places you mention. There is a Maria Dormer listed in the Lyford Baptismal register for 1853 daughter to David and Mary Anne. There are two 1855 baptisms in Lyford, but neither has the forename of Charles. I've checked my database information back to the Lyford CD transcript issued by the Oxfordshire FHS, and this is all that appears.

Unfortunately, the Hanney CD transcript only has baptisms up to 1812. The last baptism in Hanney in my wife's tree was born in 1837, and he did not have a sibling called Maria. By 1842 this family was in Brentford, Middlesex.

If you feel I might be able to help you at aty time with the earlier dates, please write again.

Bob Burns

Hello Linda

My wife has Dormer connections in the Hanney, Lyford, Uffington area in the 1800s. If you can give me a couple of names and details around the 1855 time frame, I will see what I can do to help.

Bob Burns
