Notes for JACOB SHANELY:
The History of Champaign County, Ohio by WH Beers & Co, Chicago 1881 says that Jacob bought his farm from John Shafer (Shaffer) and it was a mile northwest of Carysville, Ohio in Adams Twp. Jacob was a farmer most of his life, except two years when he was mining in California, he came home in 1850 with $3000 and bought a 120 acre farm. He also owned a farm in Shelby Co, Ohio and one in Fayette Co, Iowa. He also had a farm in Clay and Davis Counties in Kansas.

From "Ohio Woodlands" August-October 1967; CEDAR FARM (by) Thurman H. Huling: Cedar Farms recieved it's name from four red cedar trees palnted several years ago along the driveway to the house. It is part of "Land Grant" signed by President James Madison to Moses Curry. ... A dam was constructed across the creek at the upper end of the farm to form a mill pond. A mill race was dug to the lower end of the farm where a water powered sawmill was built. The saw was a vertical type that ran very slowly, it was said that the saw would be started to sawing on a log before breakfast and when all the chores were completed, Samuel Huling would go back to the mill and find that one plank had been sawed off. The neighbor below, Jacob Shanely, saw the advantages of sawing the trees into lumber, rather than burning, so he constructed a similar setup farther down the creek. With a little teamwork between neighbors, the stored water could be put to double use.

Shelby Co Ohio Newspaper Deaths 1916-30 lists Jacob as dying in California, in the 29 Sept 1919 issue, says he was 97 years old.

Obit: Jacob Shanley, son of John and Catherine Shanley, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 27th 1922, died in Glendora, California, May 24th, 1919, age 97 years and 27 days. He was united in marriage to Caroline Dormire, Feb. 24, 1853. To this union were born two children, David E. Shanley and Laura E. Gard. His wife, Caroline, preceded him in death, having died Sep't. 3rd, 1911. He was one of a family of seven children and of the family there now remains but one surviving member, Isaac, of Pemberton, Ohio. Two sisters, Catherine and Sophia, and three brothers, John, David, and Christian, all having gone before. He was brought to Champaign County by his parents when about ten years old. In 1849 he traveled overland with ox-teams to California and after a period of two years, which time he spent in gold digging, he returned and bought the farm, now known as the "Shanley Homestead" on which he resided for more than sixty years. In the fall of 1914 he left the "Old Home Place" to make his home with his daughter in Glendora, Calif., where he lived until his death, having lived with her nearly five years. He is survived by one brother, one son, one daughter, one grand-daughter, and one great-grand daughter and numerous other relatives. One grand-son, Frank J. Gard, the son of Emerson and Laura Gard, was killed on the battle-fields of France last September (1918).

Notes for SAMUEL FREDERICK DORMIRE:
Memorial Records of Shelby Co says Samuel was 84 years old at death and is buried in lot 52-E. On May 8, 1957, the Fairlawn Board of Education purchased twenty acres of land from Samuel F. and Bertha Dormire. With Peterson Construction Company of Wapakoneta, Ohio, as the main contractor, the school was built and equipped for approximately $750,000 and opened for classes in August, 1958.

DORMIRE, SAMUEL F., one of the younger class of thrifty and wide-awake farmers of Green township, was born in that township on the "Fourth of July" 1879, on the farm where he now resides. His father was Jacob Dormire, born Feb. 12, 1849. The education of our subject begain at the school at Palestine in Green township when he was six years old and continued till he was seventeen, when he had acquired a good business education, and since that time he has given his time to the farm where he and his brother, William H. are now engaged in general farming and the raising of first-class stock. They have given considerable attention to the breeding of French draft horses, short horn cattle, and Poland-China hogs. Their efforts in this line have been very successful. Our subject is a memer of the Palestine Cornet Band, and of the Knights of the Golden Eagle, being Past Chief of the latter. His father died when he was but fourteen years of age, leaving him to the care of his mother. Mr. Dormire has met with some of the bad luck that attends the family of man, but upon the whole he has been quite successful and prosperous. He is a thorough and reliable young man, and will no doubt make life a thorough success. (from Page & Smith Combination Atlas of Shelby Co Ohio, 1875)

She married CHRISTIAN ENDERS 06 Oct 1864, son of CHRISTOPHER ENDERS and ELIZABETH KOLTABACH. He was born 07 Apr 1838 in Lengsfeld, Germany, and died 24 Jun 1902 in Shelby Co, Ohio.

Notes for CHRISTIAN ENDERS:
ABC Hitchcock History of Shelby Co also lists him as Christopher Enders, and lists his wife as Margaret Dormeyer. Believe his father's name was Christopher and he's confused with him? Also says he was born in Elsass, Germany.
CHRISTOPHER ENDERS, for many years was a well known and respected citizen of Shelby county, where he became a man of large estate, at the time of his death, June 24, 1901, owning 214 acres of fine land in Franklin township, the result of his own industry and frugality. He was born in Elsass, Germany, in April, 1837, a son of Christopher Enders, who, with his wife, died in Germany.
When sixteen years of age, young Christopher Enders came to the United States and made his way to Shelby county, O. Here he worked for a time at weaving and wagonmaking and still later, when able to buy land, became a farmer and afterward, until death, followed an agricultural life. Quiet, self respecting and industrious, he was well known to his neighbors and he set and example of thrift and good citizenship. He was twice married, first to Miss Margaret Dormeyer (sp), and four children were born to them: Jacob, George, Charles and Emma, the last named being a trained nurse. His second marriage was to Miss Barbara King, who was born in Butler county, O., and still resides on......
------------
Christian Enders was born in Lengsfeld, Germany, April 7, 1838. At the age of seventeen he came to America and located at Sidney. He was for several years engaged in weaving with his brother Henry, in East Sidney. In the early days of the Civil war he enlisted in Schultz's battery. First Ohio Light Artillery, and was at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and in several minor engagements. Having received an honorable discharge he returned to Sidney and engaged in wagon making, his place of business being on North Ohio avenue. Soon after engaging in this trade he was married to Margaret Dormire of Green township, with whom he lived until her death, September 20, 1878. To this union were born six children, four of whom are still living: NIcholas C., Jacob H., a farmer in Perry township; George C., dean of the Christian Biblical Institute at Defiance, O.; and Emma E., superintendent of Flower Hospital at Toledo, O. In 1875, Christian Enders gave up his trade as wagon maker and devoted the remainder of his life to farming, living first in Perry, and later in Franklin township, where he died June 24, 1902, his burial being at Swanders.

from One-Room Schools of Shelby County, Ohio:
District #3; New Palestine or Sargeant; Location: North central part of Section 1, junction Deam Rd. & St. Rt. 29; still standing in 1992.

Almost nothing of the earliest history of this school is known. The names obviously were derived from the location near Tawawa, formerly called New Palestine, and the Sargeant family, early settlers. Records begin in 1889, when George C. Enders was teaching there. The information was taken from his written recollections, compiled during his last days in Defiance, Ohio, and published daily in the local newspaper there. In the spring of 1889, the board hired Mr. Enders for the spring term, salary $25.00 per month. The school census was nine.

7. LAURA E.4 SHANELY (CAROLINE3 DORMIRE, CHRISTIAN2, UNKNOWN1) was born 30 Mar 1862, and died 27 Nov 1945 in Riverside, California. She married EMERSON EARL GARD 14 Mar 1891, son of SILAS GARD and MARY ROSS. He was born 18 Sep 1862, and died 11 Apr 1943 in Los Angeles, California.

Notes for LAURA E. SHANELY:
I spent the day at the State Library of Ohio on Thursday and used their computers to access Ancestry.Plus. I found the following information about the family of Laura Shanley Gard, daughter of Jacob Shanley:

Laura E. Shanley was born March 30, 1862 and died Nov. 27, 1945, Riverside, CA.
[source: California Death Index, 1940-1997, which says her mother's maiden name was "Dohmire"]

Laura Shanley married Emerson E. Gard on March 14, 1891
[source: Frank Bewkes--doodle815@aol.com]

The Frank Bewkes source says that Emerson Gard's parents were Silas Hinkle Gard and Mary Ellen Ross

Emerson E. Gard was b. Sept. 18, 1862 and d. April 11, 1943, Los Angeles, CA
[source: CA Death Index, 1940-1997]

The source U. S. World War I Mothers' Pilgrimage, 1930 had Mrs. Laura E. Gard, Rt. 3, Pasadena, CA (Los Angeles Co.), mother of Frank J. Gard, 1st Lt., Co. M, 362nd Infantry. Frank was buried at the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery. The source said Mrs. Gard "desires pilgrimage later."

Frank J. Gard died in Sept. 1918 in France.

Laura Shanley Gard's other child was Mary C. Gard. She married Henry Jameson, who died when he was 39 years old. (SS Death Index has a Mary G. Jameson, b. May 25, 1893; d. May 15, 1971, Corona, Riverside Co., CA. I don't know if this is the correct Mary Jameson, because there are several who died in CA and were about the same age. But the G. for a middle initial might be for Gard.)

Mary Gard Jameson had three children: Evelyn Jameson, Mary Joy Jameson, and Frank Gard Jameson.

Frank Gard Jameson was b. July 3, 1024; d. May 16, 1993, 68y, at Eisenhower Medical Center, Palm Springs, CA [source: San Diego Union Tribune (CA) Obituaries, 1993-1994]

Frank Gard Jameson married first Phyllis Dockery, and they had four children (named in his obituary summary):
Jim Jameson, Joanne Jameson Hunt, Frank Gard Jameson, Jr., and Mary Gard Jameson

Frank Gard Jameson married Eva Gabor in 1973 and divorced in 1983. He was her fifth and final husband.

Social Security Death Index has a Phyllis V. Jameson as b. May 26, 1912; d. Aug. 8, 2001, but I'm no sure that is Frank's wife.

There is an article (or some sort of mention, at least) about Emerson and Laura Gard in "The Glendoran" (Vol. 14, No. 4, July 1996)

The 1920 Census had Emerson and Laura living on Grand Dr., Glendora City (Azusa Twp., Los Angeles Co., CA). They were both 57 years old, and Emerson was a farmer on an orange ranch.

The 1930 Census had Emerson and Laura living at 3020 Lombardy Rd., Pasadena Twp., Los Angeles Co. both were 68 years old, and they were both 29 when they were married. Their house is worth $50,000, they own a radio, and Emerson is a bank president. (all these notes from Carole Koontz 5/2003)

They emigrated to this country and finally settled in Green township where they raised a family of three children -- Jacob, the father of our subject, being the oldest.
