Lynnpranna:

Oral tradition places my father's relatives in the Blackrock area. They are indeed elusive.

I did find my great-great-great grandfather (DORNEY, John) in the Dungarvan, Waterford area. I understand rootsweb has a list dedicated to various regions of Ireland.

Poor penmanship came into play back in the day as many did not closed the top of the "o," which was mistaken for a "u." So if you look up "Durney" your folks might suddenly appear.

Good luck in your quest.

Sarah Dorney Stroup, and Ellen Dorney

I came across this story yesterday, and would like to know if any of the Dorney descendents had heard of this?

Sarah Dorney Stroup (1853-1942) was taken as a toddler (aged 2 1/2), from England to America with the person Sarah later believed to be her nurse. The woman's name was Ellen Dorney, and Ellen had a boy with her named Wystan. Ellen's fare to American, was supposedly paid for by a family member, William Park Dorney. Ellen came to America to visit her two sisters who lived here, named Mary and Margaret. Margaret lived in Hillsboro Ohio at one point, but after her husband died, moved with her 3 kids to Indiana, to live with her sister, Mary.

Ellen abandoned Sarah at the train depot, and was never seen or heard from again. A professor tried to find her parents, but never did. Sarah did managed to find Ellen's sisters and tried to ask them about what happened, and what they knew, but they were frail and unable to give her any real details. They did tell her that Ellen had moved to Missouri with her new husband.

I'd be curious to know if Ellen ever spoke of what happened, and why she brought this girl with her and her son to America?

(This is in many articles found online via Ancestry- both before and after Sarah's death- about how Sarah wanted desperately to figure out who she was. Her story is also part of a book I found on Google, entitled "Buckeye legends: folktales and lore from Ohio", by Michael Jay Katz

I have tried to trace my family name in Ireland and have come to a dead end I believe our name may have been originally spelt Dorney. When I look at some of the original documentation I can see how a clerk could have easily mispelt the surname.I have not been able to find any reference to D'ornay before 1840 in Castletownroche. The D'Ornay clan at that time married into the Clancy clan in Ireland in County Cork(Cobhn).I don't know if you have any information other than your mention in your note. They also emigrated to Australia about 1845.Listed in a book Called "Overflow of the Clancy"

That's all we have to go on. My research has only gotten me to who I believe was Bridget's (1886-1951) parents Thomas and Delia Dorney.

My father in law, Norman Parker Woodside McCracken, born in Belfast Ireland, called his home Ballygarvin based on his history in Ireland. We still don't know the clear reasons why. Good luck on your search...it is hard to research Irish roots - England, Scotland and Wales are each easier to manage. I think you have to go there and check church records. We live in Canada.
Trish McCracken

Dear P. Yufer,
Patrick Dorney was my husband's (Lamont Barry) grandfather also. About 2 yrs ago, someone distributed a copy of the 1901 Passenger List for the S.S. Campania on which Patrick arrived. He was listed as heading for New Haven to his siter's as you mentioned. Her name is difficult to make out...looks like "Mrs. Cummings". However, her address @ 173 Cedar St. is legible. I'll ask my mother-in-law, Martha Dorney Barry if she recalls her father mentioning his brother's whereabouts & the name of the sister upon whose doorstep everyone seemed to land. If I get any information I'll forward it to you. Very truly yours, Gail O'Hare Barry

The person I am researching in Patrick Melone/Malone from Missouri who lived in Oklahoma with his full blood indian wife. Patrick died in Vinita Oklahoma at the mental hospital in 1929. John's name was listed as a contact on Patrick's paperwork along side Patrick's wife Susie. Any information on either of these people would be grateful as I have hit a brickwall.

I can trace the Dorny name in East Prussia/Ostpreussen, Germany (now Poland) back to George (evidently not Georg, the German name for George) to the father of Christoph (b. 1769, in East Prussia), which suggests George was born about 1730-1750, probably not in East Prussia. Where? Does anyone have a George Dorny that fits as a son in some family, where the son disappeared into the sunset? There are Dornys in Eastern France, England, Ireland, etc. Any takers?

Re: Dorney Family, Allentown, Lehigh County, PA

As I understand it, there are many Dorney around in the area yet.

You might contact Craig Dorney of Macungie, PA.....or Theda Brinker. They seem to have done a lot of research on the Lehigh Co PA Dorney line.

The line originated in Switzerland with a move to Germany.....those records the family name is Thuny.
1740 Daniel arrived Philadelphia, 1741 Peter arrived and Henry arrived in 1743. Henry's line is the Dorney one, and many stayed around Allentown PA. Daniel's line in a generation or so was going by Turney and had moved to western PA and on from there. I have from Peter bp 1710/11 who arrived in 1741 with a daughter and first wife Anna Bahr....his second wife was Eva (perhaps Swartz) and he had another daughter bp in PA in 1749.

The families living around the Turney / Dorney in PA, many of them appear in Virginia with Peter around 1749....such as Dieter/ Teeter, Buhler/Beeler, Miller, Guth/ Good, Petre, etc. Peter's line stayed around Woodstock VA until 4 of his children moved into eastern TN around 1774, and 2 more sons moved to Kentucky around late 1770s. From there they spread all over the south and also Illinois, etc. Governor of TN Peter Turney was a decendant, Attorney General James Turney of Illinois, etc.

If you would like the early info on this Dorney / Turney family, let me know. Otherwise, there are many Dorneys still around In PA.

Mary Turney Miller

Looking for descendants of my grandfather's brother, Gerald Dorney. My grandfather, Patrick Dorney, immigrated from Ballygarvin, Ireland in 1901. His brother, Gerald, immigrated in 1903. They also had a sister who lived in New Haven, CT. Both brothers lived in New Haven for a short time, then in the Boston area. Gerald left Boston and was never heard from again - not sure if he returned to Ireland or settled in another area of the U.S. Any information would be appreciated.

I recently acquired a vintage photograph from a dealer of same. The inscription on the back is "Sail Dail Dorney" and the photograph appears to be of sister/brother twins. The imprint on the front of the photograph is "Mowrey" (the photographer or his studio), East Main Street, Ashland, Ohio. According to the dealer, the type of photographic process used for this photograph would date it to approximately 1890 or so.

I am not a Dorney; however, a friend of mine had boy/girl twins last year and I'm acquainted with someone with the last name Dorney...so I was intrigued by the photograph and decided to purchase it. Now I am curious as to who these adorable twosome are (they appear to be about six years old in the photograph).

Help???
