In regard to the passage in the Burns poem, I have heard it but do not know what the word there means. Somewhere in a reference I came across the etymology of the name as being Gaelic (common to Scotland and Ireland) as being from something like "dhu ros" (black promontory) or "dhu ros" a personal name meaning "black Ross", "ross" meaning "raven", I believe. I once did a search by computer of British phone listings of the name, apparently not including Northern Ireland, that showed 17 listings, 9 of them in Scotland. There is a hamlet shown on Scottish maps on the coast north of Edinburgn named "Durris", probably the same word.
