I am looking for anyone that can give me any information on my great grandfather Leslie W. Dorsett born on February 4, 1891 and died on March 9, 1973 in Lamar, Mo. Also my grandmother maiden name was Ledora Dorsett born March 7,1926 in Lamont, Oklahoma she passed away on October 13, 1989. I also remember her telling me that her 4th cousins were the Culverts. If anyone can supply me with any information I would Appreciate it thank you.

I am trying to identify the parents of Mary Dorsett who was born December 1832 in North Carolina; died September 8, 1902.

She married John A. "Jack" Hall, born July 22, 1824 in North Carolina; died November 18, 1890. It is possible she was his second wife.

Both John and Mary are buried in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Randolph County, North Carolina.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am a grandson of William Dorsett. My grandfather was from Bluff Elethera and he had eight children. One named after him William Dorsett who changed his name to Ralph Dorsett when he moved to New York. Only four of my grandfather's children are still alive.

my husband's 2nd great grandfather was William Bray born 1795 in Chatham County North Carolina. He was married to Eleanor Dorsett. I cannot find their marriage record or her parents for sure.Marriage must have been abt 1815 due to children's birth years. They came to Morgan County Indiana abt 1822 or so. Eleanor died in 1848 buried West Union Cemetery William Bray died in 1883 buried there also. Do you know of Eleanor? Could her father have been John, Solomon or another Dorsett?

Valinda "Linnie" Dorsett Strickland - Name Correction

Linnie is my ggg grandmother and my gr grandmother Clifford Strickland McManus was very close to her.

Many people have recorded Linnie's full name as Valinda (or Malinda) Vlimdey Dorsett. Our evidence strongly suggests that her name is Valinda, though it has been recorded a time or two as Malinda.

However, the "Vlimdey" is totally INcorrect and in the 1860 Census for Campbell Co, GA, it is actually written as Vilindey (slang for Valinda, which many old timers would pronounce as Valindy, just as they might pronounce Ida as Ider).

In many cases, the spelling of names was only as good as the census taker's understanding of what he was told and his own spelling skills - and in this case, the transcriber recorded Vlimdey rather than Vilindey (slang variation of Valinda).

Jesse hasn't responded, but I am almost certain this is my former sister-in-law's family. If so, Charles Dorsett was born 1 Aug 19ll in Sequin, Guadalupe, TX. He died in Brownsville, Cameron, TX 1 Sep 1974. If this was the same Charles, he was married to Guadalupe Martinez 30 Mar 1934 in Brownsville.

If you look up the will of Rachel Prather's father you will find that by 1736 Francis and Rachel had two children, both who were mentiones as heirs in their grandfather's will. The will was probated in Maryland, possibly Baltimore. Have copy of will ans patriculars in my books at home. Now at home now. Contact me if you want information on this.

Dorsetts in Mississippi

I'm looking for any info on Dorsetts in Mississippi. I only know of Stokes Dorsett who married Ennie Evelyn West. Stokes was my great-grandfather and his parents Lewis and Mary, though their name is spelled Dissette in the census. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found your message while seaching for William Head Dorsett. Perhaps you can help me. I have a ton of ino on the NC Dorsett family, Francis, Solomon, etc.

I am primarily interested in William H. Dorsett who married a Cynthia. One of their children was Robert, born ca 1851 and I am trying to tie him to the Robert Dorsett who consorted with Calamity Jane in Montanta, etc. in the late 1880's. Any info appreciated. Thanks again, Elaine. Again, I see the parallels with my Bull family. When they changed their name to Dyer, it was an agreement among all the siblings, who were adults with families and living in different states. I have the statement that one of the brothers made to the court and he said that it was having a son that pushed him into action, so that his son would not have to suffer as he had.

I'll bet it was the same case with the Adcocks who changed their name to Dorsett.

Diane, that part of the history I know. Just don't know why. We have had DNA tests run and we know the general family from which our Adcocks came. I am only surmising that it was William, probably son of Edmund, son of Tobias and back to Lt. John Adcock. William lived next door to the uncle of the girl that our James Adcock Dorsett married into. They lived in the proximity of Joshua Adcock, Henry Adcock and the Dorsetts.

There were three boys, Leonard, born 1780, our James, born
1781, and your Ezra, born 1787. I have always believed there were also daughters (there were several women in William Adcock's home in 1790 Census) Also in that census were just 2 boys, not 3. In the household of John Dorsett who took Ezra to raise were 2 young boys, though he had only one of his own. So have to believe that somewhere between 1787 and 1790 either the mother died or some misfortune befell the family.

William Adcock owned 400 acres of land which changed hands by deed in 1795. He was also replaced on the Road Maintenance committee in that year.

So, did the mother die? Did William Adcock die? Or did he depart for places unknown? I have not found him on future Census.

Interesting that the name change did not occur until 1821 when all 3 boys had many children of their own. Reason stated was "not necessary to mention" though it would be understandable why Ezra would want to do so, the fact that the others did when in their 30's, will remain a mystery.
Much speculation such as Shame, etc. have arisen, but nothing concrete. James Adcock Dorsett and Leonard Adcock Dorsett stayed and raised their families in North Carolina.

In 1835 or thereabouts, Ezra took his family (except 1-2 already married) and headed for Missouri, finally settling in Schuyler County, Illinois.

And that is the story as I know it. Elaine

Elaine - thank you! It's rather stunning to be given such important information. Name changes are a real challenge and you just led me right through. No question why they changed their name. I have a different, unrelated family line named Bull, who changed their name to Dyer because they were sick of the barnyard jokes. They went into their family tree to take their great-grandfather's surname Dyer. Any clue where the Adcocks came up with Dorsett?

Diane, your line is: Walter's father is George Andrew Dorsett, b. 9-20-1851 in Schuyler.
George's father is Harrison Beckerdite (Adcock) Dorsett, b. in North Carolina 4-15-1818.
Harrison's father is Ezra (Azariah) Adcock Dorsett, b. 1787 in Chatham County, NC.

This all leads back to the 3 Adcock boys (Ezra, James and Leonard) who changed their name from Adcock to Dorsett in 1821, reason given "Not necessary to mention". Elaine

I have a Dorsett in Montana with no other information about her family. Emma Pauline Dorsett was the daughter of Walter Dorsett and Emma Hollingsworth of Wyoming. Walter was born around 1890 in Wyoming. Emma was born in Whitman County, Washington in 1913 and married in Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana in 1932 to Charles Hazard Carpp.

My interest is William Head Dorsett and his family. In addition to your ancestor, William also had a son, Robert, b. ca 1851. I am trying to tie this Robert into the Robert who consorted wtih Calamity Jane in Montana in the 1880's. Do you have any data on him?

My mother's maiden name was Dorsett and we are a direct descendent of Leonard (Adcock) Dorsett and the information that I have comes from research conducted by Evelyn Dorsett Newman and her husband. Evelyn was born 4-3-1917 and was also a descendent of Leonard. I have a copy of all of this research given to me by my grandfather, James Early Dorsett if anyone is interested. It is quite detailed at times.

Leonard Adcock Dorsett was born in 1789 as an Adcock but it wasn't until 1821 when he and his brothers and all of their families changed their names to Dorsett.

Ezra, Leonard and James were raised by John Dorsett, son of Reverend Francis Dorsett from Dorsetshire, England.

From Evelyn's research she believes that Francis Dorsett's daughter married an Adcock and died when the children were young. The children were raised by their uncles John and Henry Dorsett and grandfather Rev. Francis Dorsett and eventually petitioned the court to allow them to legally change their names to Dorsett, to honor those who had raised them.

Frances Dorsett married Rebecca McSwain (2nd wife & mother of children - 1st wife Jane Prather of Md. no children) and had 10 children:

Henry Dorsett
Francis Dorsett
Clement Dorsett
Margaret Dorsett
Jane Dorsett
Rachel Dorsett
Rebecca Dorsett

So if we could find out which young lady above married an Adcock, we may be able to figure out this mystery.

Leonard and his brother James stayed in NC but Ezra Dorsett moved to Schuyler County, Illinois with almost his whole family except for Sabrea Dorsett who stayed in NC and married Ninavaeh Beckerdite.

Ezra Adcock Dorsett also married a Beckerdite - Mary Polly Beckerdite and had 7 children before they moved to Illinois.

I also have a copy of a typewritten letter written by William Taylor (WT) Dorsett on September 10, 1919 that talks about some of our early ancestors starting with England working his way forward relating more of the Marsh side of the Dorsett lineage.
