I am looking for the parents of Joseph Dorsey, who was sent to an Ontario orphanage before 1860 from Brooklyn, New York. The family story is that his father, name unknown, was killed in an explosion while working on the docks in Manhattan. Joseph married in Bothwell, Ontario and raised a family in Hammond, Indiana.

You might want to look at Mary Dorsett out of Unionville Mo.
She was married to William Kelly Whitman. They had daughters Mary, Margaret and Martha. This information is from some information on the settlement of the estate of Mary Scott Dorsett and Harrison B. Dorsett in Unionville Mo. I believe they were married in Missouri 01-21-1858. And their 1st daughter was born in Missouri then moved to Texas. Mary had died before the estate was settled.

Re: Dorsey Surname, where did they come from?

Thanks, I think I have read that page before. I don't know which family we are from then unless I do a DNA test; which I have no money for. It's the same thing with the Howard family. My Great-Great-Great Grandmother was Charlotte Hawkins Dorsey b. around 1820, daughter of Edward John Dorsey and I'm guessing Anne Ross. She married John Edward Moran and had a Henry Clay Moran who married Cora Elizabeth Beavers - they had my great-grandmother Sadie Mae Williams/Smallwood nee Moran. Do you or anyone on here have anything on this family?? Because my Grandmother, Dorothy Mae Williams(Sadie's child) father, Joseph Lovey Smallwood is def. from England. They are the Smallwood and Greene family which is/was related to the original British Royal family; the Plantagenet line and then on... Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Meg

It depends on which Dorsey family you are connected to. DNA comparison tells us that the line of the 17th century immigrant Edward was not connected to the Darcy family of England.

There are no known surviving direct male line descendents of the English Darcy family. That line, which has "daughtered out", accoding to much research was descended from a son of Sir John D'Arcy of Knath. However, Sir John had a second son who left well documented descendants in Ireland. We have DNA samples from two very well documented descendants of that Irish line.

We have a group of American Darseys whose DNA matches that of the Anglo/Norman D'Arcys from Ireland. At this time, we don't know for certain whether the American Darseys are rooted in England or Ireland.

You can read about the more findings of the Dorsey/Darsey/D'Arcy/Dossey/etc DNA Project at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/Results.htm.

Nancy Custer
Dorsey/et al DNA Project Administrator

When you look at Anne Arundel Gentry by Newman, you need to look at the 1990 revised copy and not the 1933. Newman made several corrections. One of those corrections included the Rachel Dorsey - Joshua Glover line.

To date I have not source that proves Deborah (Rachel's mother) was a Maccubbin. There was a Deborah Maccubbin that married Edward Hill Dorsey, but that is not the same line.

Mary, I actually have nothing at all concerning my Irish
family, other than a photo of the headstone's of my gr.gr.
grandparents. He is buried in a railroad cemetery, and she
died thirty-four years later, and is buried probably fifty
miles away in a Catholic cemetery. Both headstones say, they were born in County Galway. He in 1812, she in 1817.
I have no idea what her maiden name was. In answer to your
question about census' of Ireland...I only wish I did have
something. If you know the parish that they attended in
the mother country, the priests can look up quite a bit of
info for you....for a fee, of course.
Mary, I am also searching for a County Galway Dorsey. My great great grandfather was Bartley Dorsey, b. 1812 M. to
a Margareth ? b. 1817, also County Galway. My ancestors left Ireland about 1854, I know that because their last child born in Ireland was 1853, and the first born in U.S.
was in 1855. I only recently found the names of the parents who I imagine were left behind, or alread deceased.
They are, John and Julia Dorsey, both born abt 1785. I have
many Dorsey's listed who immigrated to West Virginia (actually Virginia, but later became W.V.). If there is a
possibility we might help each other, I am all for it.
My name is Joseph John Dorsey, I hope to meet you, at least
on-line.

Hi Joseph,

I'm at a loss for finding where my great-great grandmother came from. They came about the same time that your relatives did. I did find where she filed for divorce in Fond du Lac WI, and in there she said that they were married in County Mayo. My great grandfather used to claim that they were from County Mayo, but they bordered Galway Bay. There are a few families named "Donley" or some similar spelling, her married name, but nobody in Mayo has the last name of Dorsey, according to Griffith's Valuation. As you know, there were many quite a few in Galway. None of the divorce papers noted anything about her own family. I have a colleague who is close to his Irish cousins. He claims that people in one county seldom associate with those in another county. But I'm guessing that is not a hard and fast rule given the potato famine everyone was escaping.

Have you run into anything that lists names of individuals in a household as in a Census or Parish rosters for County Galway sometime around 1850? They don't seem to have these for Mayo.

My great great grandparents claimed to be illiterate, but there is no family stories of relatives other than their own small family, and nothing in the divorce papers whatever about next of kin. If most of one's family died in the famine, maybe they wouldn't mention them.

I'm in Minnesota. The naturalization papers said that they came to New York in 1860 but there is no mention of that family with two small children in the passage books. There's also no mention of where they were for 2 years before landing in Fond du Lac, WI ... The couple were both able to age 20 years for every census--perhaps life seemed that long for them! Maybe they did travel with her relatives to West Virginia before coming out west, but they'd probably have missed the Federal Census.

Have you investigated the Irish Family History Foundation? (http://www.irish-roots.ie). I noticed that they have both an east and a west Galway group. The Irish Family History Foundation sends out alerts when they add new material ... I've not seen any on Galway lately.

I have checked a number of Dorsey-Ridgely source documents and can find no Elijah Ridgely Dorsey. There are records on an Ely or Eli Dorsey who had Ridgely connections. Whether Eli is a shortened or nickname version of Elijah is unclear. Do you have any additional information Elijah's immediate family that might shed some additional light on his ancestry? As with many of the unconnected Dorsey lines of the of the 1840-1880's, Elijah is probably the son or grandson of a well documented family line of the Dorsey's If interested, I can still get a copy of the Dorsey Chart, a massive family tree compiled in the 1930's that outlined most of the major lines of Edward Dorsey's descendants for up to nine generations.

I have done some further checking and perhaps your Dorsey's are linked to descendants of Elisha Dorsey 174- !802 who lived in Baltimore County. You can contact me at avonlunz@comcast.net

Beth, the DNA profiles are a great new research tool. DNA has already proven that the Edward Dorseys are not descented from the Anglo-Norman D'arcy family but are of Irish lineage. As more DNA profiles are developed, links to several Irish clans can be established. Contact me at avonlunz@comcast.net for more information on the chart, a beautiful Dorsey coat of Arms and a book list. Your uncle may also want a Chart, it covers over nine generationa of the descendants of Edward Dorsey, the immigrant. regards Robert

Unraveling a numder of unlinked Dorsey/Ridgely family branches in Howard Co. has proven to be a daunting genealogical task. Hopefully further research will tie them to proven lines outlined in early published works, such as Newman and Nimmo.
Of special interest is the Dorsey Chart, One of largest and most comprehensive family trees of any family in Maryland, the chart covers up to nine generations of the descendants of Edward Dorsey, the immigrant. It shows the close ties by intermarriage to many other prominent Colonial Maryland families, such as the Howards, Ridgelys, and Warfields. It was compiled by descendants in time for the Tercentenary Of Maryland. If interested in it and a very beautiful copy of the Dorsey Coat of Arms, contact me at avonlunz@comcast.net Regards Robert
