Dicey Robinson Dorton was the daughter of my great X6 grandfather and grandmother William and Charity Robinson. Her maiden name was supposedly Kennedy.

MARY MARGARET JARRELL "Jerry" HUGHES, 89, of Texarkana, Texas, died
Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at St. Michael's Hospital in Texarkana.

Mrs. Hughes was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Clarksville, the daughter of
Ella Mai Dorton Jarrell and Garett Martin Jarrell.

She was the widow of Dr. Robert Paul Hughes, who died Dec. 12, 1990.

She is survived by her sister, Mildred Weasner of 104 Cumberland View
Drive; her son, Dr. Robert Paul Hughes Jr. and his wife, Mary Jo
Hughes, of Fort Smith, Ark.; and two daughters, Bette Lyn Hughes
Shoptaw and her husband, Ralph Shoptaw, and Margee Hughes Hawkins, all
of Texarkana.

Mrs. Hughes is also survived by nine grandchildren, Peyton Elizabeth
Mills, Hallie Hawkins, Garrett Clifford Mills, Bret Nathan Shoptaw and
Holly Shoptaw Giles, all of Texarkana, Robert Paul Hughes III and
David Hughes, both of Fort Smith, and Joe Cartwright Hughes and John
Austin Hughes, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; and by a nephew, Michael
Weasner and his wife, Wendy Weasner, of Kingston.

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, Jan. 3, at First United
Methodist Church in Texarkana.

The Rev. Michael Clayton and the Rev. Blake Bradford officiated.

Entombment was at Chapel Wood Mausoleum in Texarkana.

Hi Robert,

I must have overooked it before but I notice that you have Nancy as the name of Charley Newman's mother. Everything that I find indicates her name was Lucy. Do you know if this is a middle name that she went by? In the North Carolina Birth Records it shows that James Newman and Lucy Shell are the parents of Charles Newman b. 1887. Let me know your thoughts.

Tiffany, I believe there must be two Joel Dortons. The Joel listed here doesn't fit with the information I have for Sarah's father. However I have also found her in the marriage register with her last name is spelled Deston. She is listed in the annotated census as being Sarah Dorton. If you look back at some of the earlier posting you'll see the Wiley connection. I'm related to Jenny Sellards Wiley about three different ways. Bubby Rowe

Iris, thank you. I wonder if Martha is Sarah's mother and not Haley. All I have to go on is the annotated census for Wayne co. WV. I'm not sure right now if it was the 1860 or 1880 census. My mind is so mixed up here lately. But whichever one it was they have Sarah's parents listed as Joel and Haley Dorton. And if memory serves me there's another place se is listed a Deston. It is amazing how things get so mixed up. You are probably correct in what you found, and I thank you for your help.

Joel and Martha had a daughter named Sarah Dorton who was born in 1851 and who is listed on the 1860 census. Your Sarah may be her.

In all of your Dorton information do you have listed a Lewis Dorton? He is in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 Census for Shelby County, Kentucky. I believe he is the father of my George Dorton who moved to Callaway County, MO abt. 1827-1830. Any information or leads would be appreciated. I have posted on this board in the past regarding Lewis but have received no information as yet about him. Thanks in advance for your answer.

There are several Dorton's buried in a cemetery in River Ky where a great grandson of Jenny and Thomas is buried. He is William E. Wiley. Not sure if there is a connection or if it helps you.

She & family moved to Adair Co,KY; shown in deed book there in 1832. I have Charles(70+)living w/son David (50+)on 1830 Cabarrus Co,NC census. There are two sources that you might want to try (if you haven't already - due to the time lag):
1. Cumberland County's First Hunders Years by
Helen Bullard and Joseph marshall Krechniak.
2. Tales of the Civil War Era by
Mrs. Stella Mowbray Harvey.

The latter is a compilation published by the Chronical publishing of Crossville Inc. in 1963.

Both sources mention the murder of Moses during the civil war.

This branch of the Dorton family is my brick wall. I am still trying to locate my grandmother's family. She was a Dorton from a family that came from Virginia to Shelby County , Kentucky around 1800. I am still trying to find information on the family before 1800. Here is a brief overview. Any help would be appreciated, especially if you have seen a Lewis Dorton listed in any of your research.

I am looking for information on Lewis Dorton who lived in Shelby County Kentucky from circa 1800-1830. He had a son George and a daughter Elizabeth and possibly other children unknown to me. Elizabeth married Hiram Shakelford Dec 15, 1817. George married Nancy Clatterbuck Aug 14, 1816 in Shelby County, KY. Lewis is listed as paying the bond for a number of marriages including Ducker, Vories, Garrett, Moses, Adams, Williams, Wells, Riddle, Dearinger, and is listed as the cousin of Elizabeth Feuell at her marriage to William Hunley April 20, 1813 and paid the bond. He also is noted as putting up the bond for the founding of the town of Graefenburg, Shelby County, Kentucky. I am interested in where he came from, his wife's name and any other children he may have had. I would also like to know if he died in Kentucky or if he came to Callaway County Missouri with his son George Dorton when he moved in 1830. Any help would be appreciated.
Later generations of the Dorton family in Missouri carry the names of William, Reuben, Oliver, Benjamin, Beauregard, Bertha,and Matilda among others.

Maxie Florence was the daughter of William Howard and Sarah FLETCHER DORTON. Sarah FLETCHER DORTON was the daughter of John S. & Matilda BARRETT FLETCHER. Sarah was born 1869 married 1885 and died 9 Jun 1935. Below is her obituary which list her daughter Mrs. J. G. Coldiron. Hope this helps

Mother of Local Bank Cashier Succumbs at Taylor
Mrs. Sarah Fletcher Dorton, 68 years old, mother of D. H. Dorton, cashier of the Second National Bank of Paintsville died at the home of her son Orab Dorton at Taylor, Ky., Sunday night. Word was received here at an early hour Monday morning and Mr. Dorton left immediately. Her death was due to heart failure and she had been in poor health for some time. Mrs. Dorton was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. Dorton who died four years ago. She spent the greater part of her life at Red Bush where her family was reared. Last winter she spent in Chicago with her son A.G.T. Dorton. Funeral services were held at Fullerton Wednesday and burial was in the family cemetery there. She is survived by nine sons and four daughters. They are Mrs.J. G. Coldiron, Fayetteville, Ohio; Mrs. Ira Lester, Skaggs, Ky.; Mrs. Marvin Hill of Martha, Ky.; Mrs.Sanford Smith, Columbus, Ohio; D.H. Dorton of Paintsville; J.R. Dorton of Red Bush; Thomas Dorton of Kansas City , Mo.; Harry Dorton of Fayetteville, Ohio; A.G.T. Dorton of Chicago; Harry Dorton of Martha; Orbie Dorton of Taylor, Okie Dorton of Wayland and John A. Dorton of Salyersville.
