Re: Stroup / Stoxen/Dorwin connection to this thread

This post is old, I know, but in doing research, I've just come across a connection linking the Stroups, Stoxens, and Dorwins together. They must have all known each other in South Dakota. Harry Stroup, who, as previously mentioned, married Natalie Luella Stoxen (daughter of Anna and AC), was a hired hand who lived with the Dorwin family. He's listed on the 1910 census as living with them in Odessa, South Dakota. Charles Glenway Dorwin, who was a member of the Dorwin family Harry lived with, married Natalie Stoxen's older sister Jessie Nevada Stoxen.

Stroup / Stoxen connection to this thread

I'm not "directly" related to any of these last names. My great-grandfather's sister was married to a Jole, whose line had a marriage to a Stroup, who has a Stroup married to a Natalie Sto(s)en (as transcribed by Ancestry.com, which other researchers have listed as Stoxen among the Family Trees. I post this only because the Stroup name came up in this thread with what appears to be wondering how it might be connected. The South Dakota Marriages, 1905-1949 Record database has the marriage date between Harry & Natalie as 19 Dec 1917 in Brown County, but residence county as Edmunds with post office as Bowdle.

Shannon, Sorry it took me awhile to get back on, I didn't see your posting here until I pressed the submit button. If the earliest you have for the Dorwin family is with Sam's father Lyman, then I have a pleasant surprise for you - I have your branch back to their emmigrant Ephraim Darwin! You are correct about Lyman's second wife Jedidah Hoyt. I'm excited about our connection, I'm sure we are going to be able to help each other with some updating of records.

Dorwin Info

Hi Shannon, Just a quick note before I go to work, then I'll put some info together for you this evening when I get home. But for now, I would like to respond to a few of your comments. First, you may find it of interest that it was your Lyman's great-grandfather Samuel (2) Darwin who took on the DORWIN spelling. In reality, whoever transcripted the court records was actually credited (or blamed) for doing so. Samuel's name was found mispelled in a record as D"o"rwin instead of Darwin, so that was the way his name remained from that time on. As for the names you mentioned - August and Anna Stoxen, and Stroup, they are not at all familiar to me, at least not right now. You may have the same problem I've been struggling with, finding something amongst great grannies keepsakes that does not tie in with any "known" relationships. (I have chased Byron McCLALLEN for years, looking for leads as to whether or not he connected to the family.) Personally, I think our ancestors had very close ties with friends and neighbors and they were like family to them, so they kept things about people dear to them.
Sila was the wife of Samuel (4) Dorwin, her maiden name was STONE. I have photos of all the Dorwin gravestones at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sparta, Wisconsin. I made a few trips there to do research. I have not been able to find any records for Sila's dates. As I said, I will get all the dates and names that I have to you later. Finally, as for my relationship, let me sum it up this way for now - your Lyman's brother Fayette was my ancestor. Fayette was my g-g-great-grandfather. Looking forward to exchanging info. I found your email address on this site, so I will be able to email you some of the data.
Lylia

Dorwin Family from Vermont

Shannon, I moved our discussion to this board since I have not been able to find a connection to the McClallen family, as of yet. My great-grandmother Bessie Eldora (DORWIN) Fish was born in Sparta, Wisconsin. Our ancestors are related, and I can explain all that later in more detail. I was chasing a lead in the McClallen family because Bessie had in her possession a letter written by Byron McClallen to his "Sis" when he was in the Civil War, and I was hoping to find some connection between the two families. Since I could not figure out why or how she ended up with such a letter in her possession. My roots are with the Dorwin family, however. I am very interested in doing some sharing and comparing of histories. Already, I can see that you were able to do some fine tuning on previous information that I had collected. Perhaps I could do the same for you with some that I have. I do have questions for you. What is your email address?
Re: Laura Dorwin in N.D

Hello Erin, Obviously, I have not been on the message boards for some time and I just now found your second response of April 27, 2004. Sorry for being so late.

Thank you for the update. I received most of the info regarding "LaFayette" and Mary Dorwin's family from Jean. However, I had collected the rest of the Dorwin family myself through my personal research. Prior to my contact with Jean, LaFayette (aka Montreville/Mont) was the missing chapter of the family. I had traced all others, but he was my elusive brick wall.

LaFayette may have been his original given name, I noticed in the census in North Dakota that he was recorded as Lafayette or LM - which would have been "LaFayette Montreville." Although in the Wisconsin census he had been recorded as Montreville in his earlier days. Even after he married Mary, the Wisconsin 1880 census listed him as Montreville. Perhaps his preference to use Lafayette changed in later years.

Lafayette/Montreville was born in Franklin County, Vermont as well as all his other siblings. His parents were FAYETTE Dorwin and Sophronia Watson.

Makes me think that even hisfather's name (Fayette) could have originally been LaFayette, although all records and his grave stone indicate he used Fayette.

If you are still looking for information about your family I can help you. Please email me at LVHare@trxinc.com

Hello Lylia!
I recently came across more information about Laura in a Nortonville, ND 75 year dedication book. My grandparents (my grandfather would be Laura's grandson) still live in Nortonville. Here's what it said about her:

Laura Irene Dorwin was born Nov. 2. 1888 near Tyler Minn. to LaFayettte and Mary (Newith) Dorwin. She came to the Nortonville area with her father; two brothers, Orrin and Wallace; sister Verna; and Verna's husband Joe Wider; and their two sons, Earl and Walter. Laura's mother and the rest of the family came later.

They lived near Nortonville, ND and had three daughters Cora, Jean, and Irene. I'm not sure who is the oldest. Cora was my great-great grandmother and is no longer with us.

Lylia, Maybe the link between the families is in a generation further back. Charles J. Dorwin had 2 brothers and a sister, Clarissa. When she married it was to a Chamberlin. Last I knew, that branch of the family settled in Florida. Sam and Lucy met and married in Vermont. The earliest record I have is of Sam's father Lyman Dorwin, born in Fairfax, Vt in 1807. When I get home, I will look at spouse names, as I don't remember it off the top of my head. I do recall that he was married twice, his second wife's name wad Jedidah Hoyt.

Lylia, I can't tell you how excited I was to get your message! We never knew about the name change. It got me to thinking, so I went back to pictures, and other documents I have. The earliest name I have is Sila, but no dates or maiden name. Her gravemarker just says her name, and aged 84 years, and that she was the mother of Lyman. I also found etchings of names that I don't know. I thought maybe you would have come across them. August and Anna Stoxen, or the surname Stroup, Co. H 21st eng. AEF. Gram made these etchings with other family members, so they must mean something. I also verified some dates- Births, Deaths, and weddings, that I could pass on if your missing some. I'd love to know about Lyman's parents, and the dates of Ephraim-birth,death, whatever you've got. How exactly are you related to the dorwins? Which branch? I don't have much info on my great-grandad's aunt and uncles;Clarissa, Oscar, or Lyman W., or even Lyman Sr. first wife Almira Wanzer.

I have gravestone etchings of Anna Stoxen, and I wasn't quite sure how she fit in with the family. My grandmother made alot of friends that remained close her whole life. Her name was Clara Dorwin when she lived in South Dakota. She grew up in Bowdle, went to college at Wesleyn and was a schoolteacher in St. Lawrence. She was born in 1900. It's possible that she was a friend of someone else in the family. Before they landed in South Dakota, the Dorwins lived in Wisconsin. Maybe in pictures or letters there may be some mention of them? Charles, Mary, Glenway, or Clara. I'd appreciate any help in this-Thanx, Shannon
