Thanks so much for this info. Here's what I have for Wilburn's pension:
Private Wilburn D. Doster - 41st Georgia Regiment. Enlisted at Greenville, GA in 1861. Wounded at Atlanta and Vicksburg. Disharged at Meridian, MS. Alabama pension no. 12105, Elmore County. Witnesses: J. M. Wallace and P. M. Doster. Buried at the Wetumpka City Cemetery.
Any idea who the P.M. Doster could be? Wilburn's wife was Prudence Wallace, so am presuming the J.M. Wallace is her brother, James Madison Wallace.
I think you are right, Henderson is most likely Wilburn's father.
If you have any more info, I would appreciate seeing it.
Thanks so much.
Billie Brinkley

Re: James W. Doster and Wilburn D. Doster

Originally thought Wilburn D. Doster was a son of James Doster of Coweta Co. However, James' son, William, served in the 41st Infantry, but died on the 21 Sept 1862. James of Coweta was called his father when he applied for pay due William.
Henderson Doster, b. ca 1802, and wife, Mary "Polly" Childs, b. ca 1812, were in Heard Co, GA in 1860. Stateline, Ga p. 687, 195-181
Henderson DOSTER 58 M Farmer Ga
Mary 53 F
Absalom 21 M
Welborn 19 M
Nancy K. 25 F
Mary C. 23 F
Sarah L. 14 F
Nathan 12 M
md. Mary Childs in Jones Co, Ga.
When Molly E. Doster joined the UDC in Wetumpka, AL, she was the daughter of W. D. Doster, Co F, 41st Ga Regt. Confederate records show W. D. Doster enlosted Mar 4, 1862 in Greenville, GA (Meriwether Co) for 3 yrs. Meriwether Co is just south and east of Heard Co. Since James Doster of Coweta lost his son during the WBtS, now think that Wilburn /Welborn was the son of Henderson Doster.

My grandmother Jane Elizabeth Doster always said that Green B. was her grandfather and Fannie Doster Porter was her grandmother. I can't find a connection between Green B. and Andrew Jackson Doster. I find it odd that Jackson's seems to be tied in with this family as well. Could Fannie's maiden name have been Jackson? Anyone have any ideas? I do have pictures of Andrew Jackson Doster and his family. Including my grandmother as a young child.

Several biographies written in the late 1800's state that the Dosters were English and one called a man named Doster a "black Irish."

Glenna, you are absolutely right. The William Doster who lived in Frederick Co, VA was the grandson of Thomas the Emigrant Doster and son of Thomas Jr. The William who was the son of Thomas the Emigrant left Frederick Co, VA and moved to Anson Co, NC before heading on into Georgia. He must have left between 1765 and 1767 - in 1765, the son of James Doster, brother of William, was born in VA - and in 1767, James received a land grant in Mecklenburg Co, NC. Also, William got a land grant on the same Richardson's creek in 1768. And, as you can see, the William Doster buried in Winchester wasn't born until 1766!!
We estimate that Thomas Doster, Jr., was born before 1727, based on being named Executor of Thomas Sr's estate in 1748. He was probably born in New Jersey, but no proof. The family moved about 1742 from Burlington Co, NJ to then Orange, now Frederick Co, VA.

The list of children we have is:
1. Ruth Doster, named in the will of James Crumley as granddaughter, b. by 1757. A GenForum item by Linda Noland Layman indicates a James D. Noland who was born about 1780 in KY, POSSIBLY the son of Philip of Adams Co, OH and Ruth Doster. [see Nowlin Family Genealogy Forum]
2. William Doster, b. ca 1766, d. 1826, Frederick Co, VA. Married 1/ Margaret Barnett (b. c 1761 VA, d. after 1850 in OH, d/o William Barnett). 7 children. Md. 2/ Margaret ?? the nanny, after his first wife left for Ohio. 1 child. This William was the man who owned a tavern, and should not be confused with
his uncle William Doster, who also married a Margaret, but left Frederick Co, VA, in the middle 1760's.
3. Sarah Doster, b. ca 1768 VA, d. 25 Sept 1838 Frederick Co, VA. Md Wm. Dehaven [source: Kern, Wilmer L., Frederick Co, VA: Settlement and Some First Families of the Back Creek Valley, 1730-1830, p. 469]
4. John Doster, b. 19 Mar 1770, d. 7 Nov 1840 Fayette Co, OH, md. 18 Nov 1795 Lydia McNees, d/o Isaiah & Elizabeth McNees. [See Rootsweb ...
www.rootsweb.com/~ohbelmon/biblerecs.html Doster Family Bible.
5. James Doster, appears in 1779 in Boonesborough, KY in 1782, administration papers on his estate signed by Thomas Doster appear in Berkeley Co, VA. NOT PROVED. Would guess he was born about 1760, and since the other two brothers of Thomas Jr. left for NC in the mid 1760's, it appears he was a son of Thomas Jr.

As far as Mary who married Meredith Darlington, The Doster Genealogy book has her listed as the daughter of William Doster ... the book confuses the uncle William and nephew William ... but it would be William Doster #2 above.

Margaret and children went to Zanesville, OH, and the book shows: [p. 55]
6. Margaret (Polly) Doster, b. 1808 Winchester, Va., d. Zanesville, O. About 1808 moved to Zanesville with her mother. m. Darlington. r. Zanesville, O. 3 chil.
a. Evaline Darlington, b. July 1835 Zanesville, O. d. same April 1903, age 68. m. W. D. Schultz ...
b. Harvey Darlington, b. about 1837 Zanesville, O.
c. Robert Darlington, b. Jan. 1839 Zanesville, O. d. same Oct. 1899, age 60. r. Zanesville, O. 2 chil. 1. Bernard V. H. Darlington. Died.
2. William Darlington. Died.

I have no information on Rhoda, but would think she was also the daughter of William. ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF!!

Could Southern Dosters be Irish or English?

Would like the proof for Martin being the ancestor of Thomas Doster who died in Frederick Co, VA in 1748. We have Thomas in 1741 in Burlington Co, NJ and by 1743-44 had moved to Frederick Co, VA. No proof of anything before 1741.

Also, there are two citations that show the southern Dosters were Irish. One is Memorial Record of Alabama, p. 346 - Col. Charles S. G. Doster ... father Absalom Doster born in Mecklenburg Co, NC in 1796 ... [Absalom's] parents, James and Lydia Doster, came from an inflential family of North Carolina, of Irish extraction. ...

The next is from The Wilkes-Barr Weekly Times, 18 Aug 1900, p. 5 titled "General Gordon's Boyhood. Life in Georgia in the Old Days, "Before De Wah". Born in Upson Co, GA ... the first school I attended ... The schoolmaster was an Irishman named Doster, with ruddy complexion, clean shaven face, and hair as black as a raven. He was a man of medium size, but when engaged in his favorite amusement of flogging, ...

My guess is German, by way of Britain. These dates were before the World Wars, so to be German was not a negative and they would not try to hide German heritage.

Wow. My father is the son of George Reid Doster Jr., which makes him the III. Wilma Barbee was his mother. We reside in Louisiana, just north of New Orleans. We have never known about any other Doster's in Louisiana. Never heard of Stephen Doster. I wonder what that connection is? Anyone else related? I don't know much about the Doster's so any information is great.

I am also interested in any records of Malachi Doster. I can follow his son George W. Doster's decendants thru Absolum Marvin Doster to the present day, some of them anyway.

I am looking for the family members of Louisa Doster. Louisa Kraemer married a William Doster and they lived at 2210 East Gordon Street in Philadelphia around 1906. Louisa's mother was Sophia Kraemer and Sophia is my great great great grandmother. The only two family names I have associated with Sophia are Kraemer and Doster.

I know this is a long shot and a roundabout way of finding information on Sophia (nee Striebich) Kraemer, but thought I would give it a try. Sophia came to America in 1852 from Forbach, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany with her husband Valentin. Any information you can provide would be helpful.

Is there anyone out there interested in a Doster / Dorster DNA project? I would like to see if I can track my DNA to Johann Martin Doster, born in Niederhofen in 1655. His grandson, also Johann Martin Doster, moved to Hirschenhof, a German colony in what is today Latvia, and his grandson Johann Jacob moved to nearby Riga, where his grandson Karl (my great-great-grandfather) was born in 1854. Most of the Doster families in the US are from the first Johann Martin. There are also Torster families descended from the Hirschenhof Dorsters.

James Doster was born on 14 Aug 1735 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, son of Thomas Doster of Niederhofen. James is the founder of Branch #3 described in The Doster Genealogy, a book available on Ancestry.com. He married Lydia Springer, daughter of Dennis Springer. James died in 1818 in Meck NC. They had eleven children, including Obediah and Sampson. Obediah was born 2 Jan 1785 and died 11 May 1868. Around 1791 he married Leah Winchester, daughter of Douglas Winchester and Sarah Matthews. They too had eleven children, including Terressa, born on 16 Apr 1832. She married Lafayette Belk and they had two children, Cobron b. 1852 and Christopher Memphis b. 18 May 1864.

Obadiah's older brother Sampson was born in 1765 in Buford Township and married Nancy Agnes Laney, daughter of George Laney and Mary Lynn Welsh. They had a daughter Hannah, born in 1787, who married Darling "Blue" Belk. They had a child Frances, b. in 1816.

I didn't find any connection to a Litle and I'm not sure how the two Belks are related. If you know any living Doster males, please let me know. I am trying to find someone to do a DNA test. My Doster ancestor is Johann Martin Doster, born in 1655.
Eric von Dorster

They are children of Thomas and Deborah Doster, who moved from Putnam Co, GA to Coweta Co, GA. Thomas is believed to be the son of William and Margaret Doster; William and Margaret likely married in Frederick Co, VA, then moved to Anson/Mecklenburg County area of NC, then to Wilkes Co, GA before 1774. Thomas was born ca 1769, and he and Deborah appear in the 1850 Coweta census.

Mrs Ben Hill Doster, wrote "The Doster Genealogy" in 1945 in honor of her husband. This book has been scanned by Heritage Quest. If your local Library subscribes to Heritage Quest, you can read it online with your Library card number.
Frank Doster's plea for clemency for the murderer of his son, Dr. Wade Doster

"On March 8, 1920, Mrs. Doster, common law wife of Capt. Wade Doster of the medical corps, U. S. A., shot and killed him in Columbus, N. M., following a night of quarreling according to evidence introduced at the recent trail in Deming. It was brought out that Mrs. Doster, who had been intimate with the young army officer for nearly three years, had signed a contract to remain away from him in consideration of money to be paid her at the time of the signing of the contract and by the month thereafter.

As the killing occurred in Luna-co., the case was tried at Deming, the county seat. J. S. Vaught was the prosecutor, and R. F. Hamilton and Fred Sherman, attorneys for the defense. Raymond R. Ryan was the presiding judge. Frank Doster, former chief justice of the supreme court of Kansas, who about four years ago moved to Pasadena, Calif., from Topeka, Kans., assisted in prosecuting the case. After the jury had disagreed as to what should be done with Mrs. Doster and after she pleaded guilty to second degree murder, Judge Doster made an appeal for clemency." -- Excerpt from "The Case of Mrs. Doster", The Western Star, Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas, May 21, 1920.

The complete article, which includes Frank Doster's eloquent and forgiving request, is at the following web page:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~kscomanc/doster_w.html

I am just beginning to search Dosters: Teressa (1832-1914), Hannah (1787-1869), Obediah (1785-1868), James, and Sampson.
Related lines are Belk, Litle, Laney, Springer, Winchester.
Perhaps you can shed some light on Hanna and Sampson, Obediah and James and the others.

Julie,

Would you consider sharing the picture of the grave of Martin Doster that you took? How wonderful to have a quilt chest that belonged to your great grandmother.

Linda
Descendant of Alabama Dosters
