Does anyone have any info on the parents of the Betsey Doten who married Ebenezer Besse in Plymouth in 1776, then relocated to Wayne, Maine? I have theories and would appreciate any input. In trying to find the origin of this Betsey Doten, I have come to the conclusion that she is either the daughter of the daughter of Edward Doty/Doten and Phebe Finney or the daughter of Zaccheus Churchill and Mary Trask, therefore also the widow of Paul Doten . Elizabeth Churchill married Paul Doty on November 6, 1774 and he died the following month. It is very possible that Elizabeth married Ebenezer Besse almost two years later. "The Churchill Family in America " doesn't mention a second marriage for Elizabeth, but no date of death is recorded either. It is as though she disappeared. If she indeed married Ebenezer Besse it is possible that researchers overlooked her because the marriage of Ebenezer was listed as being to Betsey Doten. The problem I see with this is that Paul Doty's family didn't use the name of Doten at all that I can ascertain, whereas Edward Doty/Doten did. There is no evidence that Edward and Phebe had a daughter Elizabeth or Betsey although there were a couple of gaps between children where she might fit. It is peculiar that all their children were named after close relatives, including their paternal grandfather and paternal great-grandfather, but no known child was named after the maternal grandmother Sarah Bartlett Phinney or maternal great-grandmother, Elizabeth Warren Phinney. It would seem that these names would have been used before the name Lois, belonging to Edward's youngest sister. Perhaps these names WERE used but somehow not recorded. No Elizabeth or Betsey was named when Edward and Phebe and 4 of their children were warned from Plymouth. Phebe and Lois were named and were under 10 years of age, however their known sister Hannah was NOT named although she was 2 years old at the time. It is therefore possible that another minor child could have been not named also. Additionally, Edward and Phebe had two daughters, Phoebe and Hannah who married and relocated to Wayne, Maine where Betsey Doten Bessey lived. Hannah named her first daughter Betsey. This would indicate a strong bond with another Betsey. Her next two daughters were Hannah and Phebe. Taking these facts into consideration, I feel that the evidence points to Edward Doty/Doten and Phebe Phiney as parents of Betsey. Thanks for any assistance.
