Amos Dotterer b.1792 Pennsylvania

I also have a copy of The Dotterer Family by Henry Dotterer but it refers to the family branch from Mongtomery County, Pennsylvania. I originallly thought this was my Dotterer line but it didn't end with my maternal GM or GGM. After much searching, I found another Dotterer family branch from Berks County, Pennsylvania which is adjacent to the west of Montgomery County. There are several Amos Dotterers in this Berks county line which is mine.

Anna Maria Dodderer Jundt

Looking into Anna Maria married 1713, Alsace, to Georg Hans Jundt. Some have listed surname Dodderer, some Flubacher. Anna Maria Flubacher was born, married and died in Switzerland, so I think she's out.
Does anyone have any source for the Dodderer name?

Amos Dotterer b.1792 Pennsylvania

I have been trying to trace the parents of a James D. Dotterer b. 1835 in Emlenton, PA. Married Rachel Beal b. 1840. I have had no luck. I have found several unreferenced trees that put Amos Dotterer as his father. Most of the trees have Amos as born in the Netherlands. I think most of these have mixed information.

The only thing I can find is a reference to an Amos who may or may not have been the son of Frederick Dotterer b.1769 in Somerset, PA. The reference comes from "The Dotterer Family" by HENRY S. DOTTERER. p72.

"Some time in the fall when in the city I saw on Market street some goods marked Amos Dotterer. I made incjuiry at the store but they coulil'not tell me where he was from. My uncle Frederick had a son Amos, who worked for my
father at Bellows making and Father fitted him out a few years afterwards to go to the different forges & furnaces in Penn" to sell rights to use his Patent. Have you any knowledge of this Amos?"

This by no means is any real proof of anything. The one thing that somewhat fits is that Frederick was born in 1769 and Amos supposedly in 1792.

Maybe someday someone will be able to actually find some reference material and get who Amos's parents and children were and document them.

Good Luck,

Forrest

There are about 10-12 rolls of Microfilm which contain the resaerch notes of Hen. S. Dotterer, who wrote the Dotterer Family book. There is a ton of info in them, Larry Dutter

No one knows Bernard Dodderer's wife's last name. I thought for a time that it might have been Shoemaker, there was a Gertrude in the area and about the right age. But it didn't pan out. Bernard's second wife, whom he married latter in life was the widow of Henry Antes. Her name was Christina Elizabeth DeWees [Antes]. Their marriage was of short duration as Bernard died shortly thereafter. Christina's daughter from her first marriage, Christina Antes married Bernard's nephew George Philip Dotterer; the son of Bernard's brother Johann Michael Dotterer.

I was wondering what you found out about Amos and Mary McAvoy? What I have found by matching dates is that Amos born in 1838 married a Mary (I think McAvoy) and had 4 children George, Mary, Laura, and John M. (who is my husbands great grandfather). I knew Amos and later his sons worked at Amos and Son which made bricks and a lot of Philadelphia is built with Dotterer bricks. The information was found on Rootsweb and familysearch.org, where I found the kids names. If you have anymore information I would appreciate hearing from you. I hope you are still active with this, for most posts I seem to be 8 years late.

Thank you for the reply and information. My grandmother was a Tedrow. My father was dark and dark hair. Looked Italian or possibly Jewish. No Italian blood in any trees. I have olive complexion and dark hair. Trying to find out where these traits came from. Most ancestors on mother and father sides came from Germany and/or Ireland so traits probably didn't come from there. Many Germans hid their Jewish Heritage after they came to America. First ancestor to use Tedrow named was George Tedrow born 1767 PA he later moved to OH and offsprings moved to IN.

Hi,
Not that I am aware of. All the information I have is from German Evangelical & Lutheran records. Both in Germany and the US. The only Jewish connection I know of is Henry Dotterer, born abt. 1810, the son of Daniel and Barbara (Muthardt) Dotterer. He married Sarah Levi. Hope this helps. Larry

Hi Iammixedup,
I descend from The Dotterer line also. The line you refer to is from Rudolph Dotterer, son of Johan Michael Dotterer, who arrived in America ca. 1717-1721. Someone from Rudolph's line migrated to Somerset Co. Pa., and there the name became Tedrow. This line descends from Rudolph's son Johan Michael. Another son Johan George had a line that migrated down to Maryland and here the name became Dutro/Dutrow. Then look at my name, Dutter There is one line in Berks County Pa, where our emigrant ancestors settled who spelled the name Dotterrer. Note the double r in it. All of their tombstones in the Hill Church cemetery are spelled that way. fascinating, ain't it/ Have fun Larry

I've found a document at the DAR Library that lists wife & all the children of Rev. War vet Philip Dotterer: wife Jane, children Abraham; Hannah, wife of Peter Courson; Elizabeth, wife of John Lowe; Susan, wife of Henry Shoemaker; Catherine, wife of John Smith; Philip; Anna, wife of Matthew McHenry; Sarah wife of John Murlin; Mary wife of Joseph Coleman; and Magdalena, unmarried. Lycoming County researchers will recognize names of Peter & Hannah Corson, Elizabeth & John Lowe/Low, Susan & Henry Shoemaker. I believe Magdalena married Barnet Rynearson. Meginness' History of Lycoming County spells the name as Dudder.

Does anyone have further info on Dotterer/Dudder descendents in Lycoming County, PA?

Hi Christopher,
I am kind of rushing right now so I will be brief. I don't know whether you are familiar with Dr. Ronald L. Dotterer, but he is from my line and has done extensive research on all of the Dotterer lines. I wanted to bring this up because as I mentioned yesterday, just about all the researchers believe that the JMD and GPD lines are related. Dr. Ron stated a couple of years back that he had found approx. 20,00 direct descendants of both families. Recently, he mentioned have 40,000 direct descendants of our ancestors. I think he has come across evidence that does link them. He is supposed to be publishing a family history and when I talked with him last, he said he had one volume ready for publishing and thought that the entire book would run into 3-4 volumes. Anyway, he would have more info on your line than me. so here is his Email address if you would want to question him: rldotterer@salisbury.edu Larry

Thanks Larry! I think it will help me in assuming that our name came from the surname of Dotterer. I have some information that I will show you when I get some more time and put it together better, so I can understand it more. From my searching so far, Conrad's father was Abraham Dotterer and his mother was Barbara Oesterlein (Esterlein). Conrad married Ester Berge (Bergey)(This is where I have found the family spellings changed from several kids such as Jacob Duttry and others). Conrad's 9th child was Isaac Dotterer(Dettery) and he was born Sep 1831 or Oct 1830. He married a Catherine Bordner first and had 8 children: jacob, Jonas B., Mary M., Anna L., Sarah, William H., David H., and US Grant. Then he married again to Sarah J. Madrick and had one child: Francis Dettrey. I have also found records that as soon as Sarah died, he soon signed a marriage Application to marry a Hetty Heiser. From there is where it becomes clear of my surname as Dettrey.

Re: Dotterer and Dettrey Relation

Hi Christopher,
I descend from a different Dotterer line than you, but I have studied my lines and the George Philip Dotterer lines. I am pretty sure that your Conrad desends from GPD's line. My emigrant ancestor is Johan Michael Dotterer, who came from the same village in Baden, Germany as GPD. They bothe appear in the Evang. Reformed Church records of Stebbach, Baden, Germany, and both came to America at the same time. It is believed that they are related but no positive evidence has been found to date. One clue is that JMD had a brother, Johan Ludwig Detterer, who came to America after Johan Michael and is listed in early Philadelphia Tax records as a tenant on GPD's land. I hope this is of some use to you. Larry

Dotterer and Dettrey Relation

I am writing to hopefully have someone verify my facts that I have found in the Bergey Family Book and another source as well. My Dettrey family has been traced back so far to a possible Dotterer family and would like someone who has information on this to reach me at sportwheels@earthlink.net. Thanks!
I show a Conrad Dotterer, b. 23 Oct 1793 and married an Esther Berge (y), b. ABT 1791. they had the following children:
Jonas Dotterer, b. AFT 1812, Jacob Dotterer, b. Sep 1828, d. 25 Feb 1896. married 1. Mary Kiehl, 2. Rebecca Leffler.;A Possible twin of Jacob who died in infancy; Conrad, John, Mary, Abraham, Ann, Isaac, Susan, and Esther.
I am particulary interested in the line of Isaac since this is where my family seems to match up with. He apparently changed his last name to Dettery or Dettrey as it follows through time. Isaac married 1st Catherine Bordner and produced 8 children and then married 2nd Sarah J Madrick and produced 1 Child. I also have a 3rd marriage to a Hetty Heiser with which I have a copy of the Marriage Application. However, Isaac's father's name is listed as Conrad & Esther Dettrey. I have not found any Dettrey's listed past this time period for the moment and am wondering if this is where my search will contiue through. Thanks for any information or response.
