I can confirm Felicity's account of Michael George, with this variation: the 'fist fight' to which she refers was an illegal boxing match in the armed forces. Michael George indeed settled in the Fort Brown area. He married a Dutch (nowadays we'd say Afrikaans) girl whose surname was De Lange. He became a farmer and transport rider (but didn't just about everyone who was a white settler in those days?) I'm not so sure that he was an 1820 Settler in the strictest sense, but he certainly ended up here (in S Africa) around about that time.

Hello Michael
There was a Michael George Doubell (1799) who fled from Kent UK to Fort Brown South Africa after killing a man in a fist fight. All my doubell ancestors came originaly from Kent so there probably is a link. I have traced my lot back to around 1550. Not much help but nice to hear from you.
Felicity (Australia)

Hi Mike,

Always nice to hear from another Doubell; myself and some other Doubell researchers have been working to build up the tree over on Geni.com.

Unfortunately, we don't seem to have Wessel in the tree as yet, although I'm guessing he's a descendant of Maryanne SMUTS (born 1866). She was the daughter of Wessel Michiel SMUTS and married William Jones DOUBELL (1869 - 1893).
http://www.geni.com/people/Maryanne-cousin-of-William-Doubel...

You can reach me at cgsheldon@gmail.com if you wish to research further.

Best,
Craig

Hi Ray, I was looking for my family of Drawbridge when I noticed the name Doubell, and uncanny or what but I found a relative a Hannah Doubell married a William Drawbridge 17 March 1799 at St. Andrew, Holborn, City of London. They had a son Doubell Drawbridge b. 2nd Feb 1805 Christening Lindfield (but after reading several messages on here I believe it could be Lingfield, Scaynes Hill, Sussex. Maternal grandfather William Doubell and maternal grandmother Anne. I was looking for brothers of Joseph Drawbridge b. 1770 when I came across the Doubell and thought how unusual a name, and I must say this thread has been very interesting makes my lot seem rather boring. my email is gillianlincoln@mail2world.com I am now living in new zealand.

Hi, doubelljr

(What does 'jr' stand for? You're probably tired of the 'Dallas' jokes.)

We were French, the best part of a thousand years ago. 'Doubell' is a Norman name. So we were conquerors with William I or one of his close descendants. Which probably makes us Gascs or Vikings, if we were to take things back a few generations of a couple of centuries further.

Hi there all Doubell family members.I came upon this page purely by accident, and was amazed by what is said about the Doubell history.I was born and bred in South-Africa and always wanted to know more about my roots.I was originally told the Doubell's were from French decent, but later heard they came from the UK.I am Afrikaans speaking but still proud that I have some place of origin.I rather seem to believe that we are an aggressive lot, because I also have a very short fuse; and so do my sons.We have however broken away from the lawbreakers and became lawmakers. I have been a captain in the police with 23 years service.Anyway it's still interesting reading.Good cheer to you all!

Not sure my last post worked correctly. Anyway, I've managed to create a tree from David Drawbridge downwards (actually included his father too) it goes all teh way to the current Drawbridges. My plan was to link it to my family, but I've not yet found a common ancestor.
You can look at the tree here - http://www.phillipdrawbridge.com/georgetree/

I've managed to create a family tree for David Drawbridge based on a lot of information from one of his decendents in the US. I was hoping to link to my Drawbridge line (the same one as Frank listed earlier) but without luck.
You can see the tree here http://www.phillipdrawbridge.com/georgetree/

I am a Doubell from South Africa...my father is Henry Radie Doubell, son of Henry Dickson Doubell...and we are civil people who do not live in the woods & kill each other horrifically & then be off to another country as our ancestors did. Just wanted to inform you that we have established culture and have grown politically too. Thanks

Good Evening Frederic

Well, I've been right through all the Elizabeths in my spreadsheet and can't find any with the surname of Doubell nor, living in the London area at that time. I will pass your details on to a couple of friends who have been researching the Double name and all it's variations for several years. They may have the information your require.
Till then, all the best in your research.

Sandra

Hi Ray

Apologies for butting in on this line but wondered if you could confirm something for me please.

First of all, I have a spreadsheet covering almost 4000 DOUBLE names and their ancestry. Included amongst them are several variations of the name including the DOUBELL line, DOBLES, DOWBELLs etc as that was sometimes the interpretation of the scribe.

I looked up LEWES as a place of birth or marriage and came up with the following names:
Abraham Hugh Double b. 3rd qt 1867 at Chelmondiston Suffolk m. Elizabeth Clark on the 3 Aug 1889 at Lewes Sussex. (Abraham was the son of Abraham and Emma Webb) and died 3rdQtr 1938 at Marylebone.

Born in Lewes I found:
Ivan Sydney Double b. 4th Qtr 1879
William Ernest Double b. 3rd Qtr 1881 died 3rd Qtr 1940 in Ipswich, Suffolk.
Hugh Stanley b. 4th Qtr 1889 who married Florence B Cattlin in the 3rd Qtr of 1935 at West Ham.

Are they part of your DOUBELL family?

Kind Regards
Sandra in Preston Lancashire

hello ! I thank you for your message. My David Drawbridge and Elizabeth Doubell married on 14/04/1834 in christchurch - Southwark - London. They had a son, George, born in england about 1835 and they emigrated between 1840 and 1850. David Drawbridge was the grand-father of my great-grand-father Robert William Drawbridge.
I have just been reading a will of Richard Doubell of Lingfield, proved on 22 December 1750. I am trying to trace a James Doubell/Doubble who was born around 1749 in or around Lingfield. All I know is his father was a Doubble and was a yeoman of Lingfield at this time.

James moved to Streatham and married - Anne - and I believe they had 13 children, one was a Thomas Doubble who had 7 children by his first wife, Dinah, and 4 children by his second wife, Annie. I have traced this line back through his son, Alfred, who was the youngest son from Thomas' first marrage, but am now stuck... any information on the Doubble/Doubell's from Lingfield would be of help.

Well, this is a laugh. I am also descended from the Michael George Doubell (1799) who appears to have left Kent so hurriedly, and have heard (very!) mumbled stories about farm murders in my direct ancestry. Speaking for the South African Doubell descendants who live in Johannesburg, I can entirely confirm what appears to be a pathological genetic?? predisposition toward hot-temperedness. I would love to hear what more has been unearthed about the smugglers, or any other information that people might have to share.

We really do seem to be a rough lot. My ancestor, Michael George Doubell (born in Kent in 1799) ended up in South Africa because .. um ... the other guy died (illicit boxing match in the armed forces, it is said). And there are legends about S African Doubells clobbering and killing their farm workers for giving them cheek (most of us have evolved very far politically since then). Now I read about Richard the smuggler on trial for murder in 1740. We seem to have noticed that most Doubells in our southern African neck of the woods have lousy tempers and big mouths. Do the genes shine through still? Please try to find time to post more data about Richard. Any connection to Dr Syn? (I've stayed at the Mermaid in Rye, Kent, where the well-known smuggler is supposed to have operated.)

I just found this list on the Internet. I am interested in any information/advice re the surname Drawbridge. My grandfather Frank Drawbridge was born in Kent, England about 1888; came to Canada as a Home Boy in 1910-12; lived in Brockville Ontario Canada until his death in 1973. He was married to Gertrude Haffie in 1918. They had 2 children Edward William (my father) and Irene (my aunt).

He had a brother Ernie who lived and died in Guelph Ontario.

Any info would be appreciated.

thank you
Hi Ray,

Yes my ancestors do come from the Surrey region and were Quakers. Do you have info to assist me, from what you have gathered so far?

I have cousins in PE, South Africa by the name of Samuel, Clive, Michael, Sandra, Mary etc. Do you have any connections there?

I find this so interesting, and wish to find out as much as possible! I completed my mother's side, and we are direct descendants of Georg Frederich Handel, the German music composor!

Who knows, we may just be family?!

Kindest regards
Carrie
