Dougan family in NY

I have hit a huge roadblock with my Dougan family tree! Can you help??

My father is William R. Dougan, his parents were William Robert Bethel Dougan (b. 1921 d. 1975) & Doris Francis Vital (b. 1922 d. 1977). William R.B.'s parents were William Hudson Dougan (b. 1889 d. 1937) & Elizabeth Ruth Johnston (b. 1892 d. 1949). William Hudson's parents were James Dougan (b. 1865 d. 1935) & Susan Kearns (b. 1870 d. 1937). All Dougan men were born in NY. James Dougan's parents were supposedly born in Ireland, as were Susan Kearns parents. All these dates ARE correct, they are from our family Bible.

I do have some information about the Vital/Vitale family, and also the Johnston family (in case you are following those lines). I would love to find more information on the Dougan line. I have been told that the Dougan name was originally Doughan, and that the H was dropped when they come over... not positive about this! Thank you so much!

Hi, My names Bonnie Dougan, my father Richard Dougan told me that his grandfather George told him that they were Irish, and there name was once O'Dugan, that sometime when the family moved to the US they dropped the ' and placed the O after the D."Dougan" it was sometimes spelled "Dugan".
Dougan was the name of my ggg-grandfather Matthew Dougan. The first to move to the States.

Also another Ancestry member was told the same by his father, he left the comment on my first post of this information. I have read many post's asking about the orginal spelling of the Dougan name, and what they thought was correct. This is the most correct information as far as I know, as told by my father years ago.

If you find any different Information I'd like to know.

Thank you, Bonnie Decendent of William Jesse Madison Dougan

Hi, I'm Bonnie Jean Dougan from California. Mathew was my gr,gr,gr,gr,grandfather. I'd like to share information on the Dougan Family. I'm new here so I'm still trying to get my tree up! I found a 73 yr old aunt of mine that thought she had no family, because she had been put up for adoption in 1936. She now knows different!!There's a lot of us Dougans.

I thought I'd let myself be noticed so if I have any information anyone needs for their research, I'll do all I can from out here.

Hi, My Grandfather was John William Dougan, son of William Jesse Dougan, and Charles Edward Dougan was his father. I looked for a Glen and found a "Glenn" to be William Jesse Dougan's Brother. So that would make my grandfather's uncle your father. That makes you my Great Great Uncle I believe

My father is Richard Allen Dougan Sr. so of John William Dougan, and my mother was Auda June Clouse. they married in Michigan them moved to California with my grandfather John in 1954. I was born in 1955. I have a lot of family younger then myself here in Ca.

A book on the Dougans would be nice to see and have. I started my tree just 2 months ago. When I get into it further I my get a book also.

Which spelling is correct for "Glenn and for Jesse"? this is how I found them to be spelled in my research.

Thank you for responding to my message.
Also what is your name?

~Bonnie Jean Dougan Baxter

Roxanna Wheaton, Dougan, Adams, Palmer-New information

Roxana Wheaton married Matthew Dougan in 1816.
I have traced her through her marriages after Matthew died in 1821. In the 1850 census she is shown married to Ezekiel Palmler and living in Greenfield Twp. Erie county PA. she is 53 years old and Exekiel is 39. She and Ezekiel had 6 children, the last one born in 1841.
Conclusions:
1.Roxanna's birth date is really about 1797. If she were born in 1780 as many of you have in your trees, her last child would have been born when she was 61 years old.
2.I have not been able to find her or Ezekiel in the 1860, 1870 or beyond census years, so she may have died before 1860. For sure she was alive in 1850.
3.Since she was married at age 19, there were probably not any previous marriages before Matthew.

Roxanna's marriages were 1, Matthew Dougan 1816, John Adams abt.1823, and Ezekiel Palmer abt. 1833. These last two marriage dates are based on the dates of the births of children.
This information is found in the family bible records and census records for 1850.

Linda, here is a tree you can look at by Paula Hahn.
Under the "searches" tab in rootsweb select World Connect, about half way down the page. Enter the following under the database box :1423624 That should take you to the Paula Hahn tree (you must enter the :). You will find the information linking Gary Hahn to the Dougan line.

The Beebe connection is through Dennison H Dougan, son of Charles Edward Dougan. Dennison had a daughter named Eva Jane Dougan, she married Charles E Beebe. Their son Freeman Beebe had several sons and you probably remember living near some of them.

I am also sending you a copoy of the descendants of Matthew Dougan from my family tree.
Bette

Hi Dougan researchers,
I recently came across a mention of Roxanna (Wheaton) Adams in "Nelson's Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Erie County"pub in Sept. 1895. Page 797 refrences David Benjamin Adams. He was born two miles from Batavia, N/Y. in Jan 1833, the son of John and Roxanna (Wheaton) Adams. They came to Erie county in 1835.
This suggests to me that the last name of Roxanna, who was married to Matthew Dougan, Ezekiel Palmer and John Adams, was indeed Wheaton. The information copied from the original bible by Florence Rice Dougan also indicates that her name was Wheaton, father John Mack Wheaton, mother Martha Severcool.
Does anyone have any other evidence to confirm her last name?
Thanks, Bette
