Your grandmother, Margaret Coughlin, was my grandmother, Alice Coughlin's sister. James Dougherty is buried in the grave with all of the Coughlins. I have been searching for Alice's husband- James Carroll. My cousin and I have had a few ideas about what happened to him, but so far...dead ends. We found James and Alice in PA around the time their daughter, Patricia, was born. Then Alice is in Bayonne. We think we might have found him in a hospital that houses mental patients- sadly called PA Lunatic Hospital around 1930. I also have him in 1942 working for a Seminary. All of the Carrolls seemed very tight lipped about what happened to him. Either they don't know or won't say. (I mistakenly listed the paper as being the JJ. It was the Bayonne Times.

I found the story about James Dougherty's death in the Wendesday, August 22 edition of the Jersey Journal. The title reads: Dougherty Dies, Result of Blow Youth Struck. Quarrel Over Pigeon Results Fatally - Kelly Still Missing. It seems that James Kelly 18 years old living at 33 West Ninth Street hit James with a weapon which police believe was a heavy Stilson wrench. The next day, the caption reads: Manslaughter charge is made against Kelly. It does list his brother and sister's names: Harvey Dougherty, Mrs. Peter Donovan, Mrs. James McQueeny, Mrs. Thomas Reilly, Mrs. Robert Ferguson and Mrs. Cornelius Sharkey. It said he was living in Bayonne for 18 years and he was 37. I will try and scan it if you would like. However, the print is light.

Re: Fr. Manasses Dougherty

Phil, I do know that Manasses was at St. Paul's in Cambridge. He may have also been at the other churches you mentioned, too. This is stated in the book, The Catholics of Harvard Square. This book also states that Rev. Orr (my ancestor) was a cousin of Rev. Dougherty. But, I don't know how they are related.

Within my Orr line, from Donegal in Inishowen, there are two Orrs that married two Doherty's. Although the name is spelled differently, I have an Ann "Annie" Doherty from Clonmany, daughter of Neal and Catherine Gill. Also, there is a Marion (Mary) Doherty from Three Trees, Quigley's Point, Clonmany. Are these two in your info?

It was common for an Irish man to get his education in the states and then send or sponsor their relatives to come to the US. Once Rev. Orr became a priest, he eventually sent for his sister, and nieces and nephews, too. They also worked at St. Pauls while he was there.

There are many Dougherty, Doherty families in Inishowen. It's a popular name. Have you seen the irishgravesites.ie website? It's like being there. I had the pleasure of going to Ireland last year and saw many of the same graves. You may find it helpful.
Cheryl

I have seen these Clark County Doughertys. I believe Moses and George were in Daviess County Kentucky in one later census, forgotten which year. Believe that this may be the Moses that married Sarah Ann Whitler or Stickler on 6-9-1838 in Clark or Orange County Indiana and George may be the one that married Mary E. Dinsmore in Barthlomew County, Indiana on 8-16-1838.

Cheryl

I looked into the Rev. thinking he might be a sibling to my GG GF John K. Dougherty. Rev Dougherty married GG Grandparents at St Johns' in Combridge in 1848. Now I doubt if he was related. (late info from Donegal on siblings did not list him) (Clonmany, Donegal)
Manasses was at St Peters in Cambridge for many years (at least 1850 to his death in 1877. Naturalized in 1854.
His immigration showed no other Doughertys coming in with him.
The Rev. lived on Concord Ave near the church for years.
A few other Doughertys also lived there in the 1850's and 60's but I found no direct connection.

Phil
Hi Philip, My name is Barb Dougherty & I am on the Dougherty trail of our family tree. I was wondering wether your elated to our GGGrandparents they are John Thomas & Sarah Frances (Nee Macpherson)Dougherty they came to New York in 1847 from Liverpool.Acording to our GGrandfathers obituary they were Irish. Their son John Thomas Jnr was born in Orange New Jersey in 1852 he was our GG Grandfather He came to Australia in 1870 for health reasons. I have been unable to find out if he had any other siblings or anything about John & Sarah, basicly I have hit a brick wall with my search of this family. I have contacted quite a few Dougherty in the states to ask if they are related. I know that John Thomas Dougherty is a very popular name in the states. If you know anything about this family I would sincerly appreciate any information you have.
Thanks & Cheers Barb Dougherty
Thanks

No, I am not related to Manasses Dougherty (so far)

and I only know William Orr and Manasses were both clergy in Cambridge. Don't know their relation to each other.

Manasses married my GG Grandparents in 1848 (both were Doughertys) I was attempting to find if Manasses was related to Ellen Dougherty, my GGGM.
Several Doughertys from the west side of Woburn in 1850's had previously lived in Cambridge (Fresh Pond area) near St John's. No luck so far in conncecting them.
Apparently, my Dougherty ancestors were from Donegal in the parish(town?) of Inishown (sp)

Phil Doherty

Thanks for the reply, Philip. I see your last name is Doherty. Are you related to him? If so, then you will be related to the ORR family, especially Rev. William Orr who is a cousin to Rev. Manasses Doherty. We're trying to figure out how they are related. could you shed any light on that question?

They were both from Co. Donegal. Both priests were assigned to the same church. Fr. Orr replaced Fr. Doherty.
Cheryl

Hello
My great aunt Bridget Dougherty married Patrick O'Hara in Philadelphia in 1893. Their son John was born in 1894. Unfortunately I do not know anything about Patrick O'Hara's ancestors. He died in 1910 and here is some additional info about him:
He owned a plot in Holy Cross cemetery, next to Julia Dougherty's plot in which the following are interred:
Name Buried Age
Charles O'Hara 1/31/1944 45
Martin O'Hara 10/29/1903 2 months
Henry A.
Hi Barbara
I don't know much about Charles Rudolph---after Maria died in childbirth in 1908, I lost track of him.
While I don't think we have a connection, their was one name I'm very curious about, that being Charles Rudolph.
Why? Because my sister in law is a Rudolph, and her uncle was Charles Rudolph. They however lived in Wakefield and Reading MA.
John Rudolph(Marcia's father)m Alice Downs.
They had 4 children a son John(jack) and 3 daughters Jane, Marcia, and Linda(who now lives I believe in CA)

Who were Charles Rudolph's parents, sibblings, etc.?

As far as I know none of my Doughtery/Dogherty/Dohertys were in PA, but who knows what is still to be learned, I may find later that some did go to PA.

barbara

Not sure if we are related but my great grandmother Mary Dougherty/Dogherty came to Philadelphia c. 1886 with her children: Julia, Bridget (married Charles O'Hara), Maria (married Charles Rudolph), Ellen, Patrick (married Rose Kerrigan) and Katharine who married first George Graham (can't find that they had any children) and 2nd married Edgar Carey c. 1908, all in Philadelphia. They came from the Foxford area in County Mayo.

I am researching the above and know that James is from Glenougherty and Mary is from Churchill. They were married in 1869 at St. Columba, Letterkenny. I do not have any documentation for this (which I would like to see). Plus, I do not know their parents, birth dates or where from. Can anyone help me.

I have been told that James' father is Bernard Sweeney from Glenougherty and his mother is Sarah Breslin. Again, I have no documentation.

Is anyone able to help me? Thanks.

I hope you are still at this address. Anthony Doherty(aka Dougherty) was from Stonefield, Parish of Kilcommon, Co. Mayo and not from County Donegal. He married Sara Monaghan from the same area. He emigrated to PA. I have a vague recollection that he went to the US, initially on his own and subsequently returned to the US with his family, accompanied by others whom he had recruited to work in the mines in PA.
My email address is corduff@eircom.net.

We (I and several other family members) are seeking information relating to Roswell Dougherty and his family / parentage.

What we know: Roswell Dougherty was born in New York c. 1819. He married Margaret Ann Walker on 03 Dec 1845 in Muscatine County, Iowa. Margaret was born Ross Co., Ohio c. 1823-35. It seems that Margaret had moved to Muscatine County, Iowa with her sister’s family, Benjamin and Leah Jane Downs (maiden name Walker) around 1845. Both families moved to Ross County, Ohio (where the Walker family lived) between March 1849 and May 1850. Roswell and Margaret had two children when they lived in Muscatine County: Mary Catherine Dougherty (c. 1848) and Roswell Dougherty, Jr. (c. 1849).

There appears to be (at least) two Dougherty families in Muscatine County at this time; a group from New York and that of J. B. Dougherty of Springfield, Ohio. We believe that Henry & Philo Dougherty may be his siblings (info below)

Henry Dougherty born 20 Jan 1826 in New York, married Ellen (Helen or Eleanor) Thacker, father of James, Mary, Chas, & Clara (between 1850-56), occupied as a cooper, fought in Union Army, died 23 Jul 1890, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Philo Dougherty born c. 1830 in New York, was apprenticed to Adam Reuling (confectioner, a German immigrant) in 1850 census, died 19 Jun 1851 with no children, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

If anyone can provide any information or clues relating to any of these, both I and my other family members would be greatly indebted. Also, if you are a descendent of Roswell or Henry Dougherty, please contact me so that we may share information (wdoughertyiii@gmail.com).

Thank you a million!

Sincerely,

Will Dougherty, III

Many of the names you reference in your post are found in my Mary Dougherty's children. Mary Dougherty was born abt. 1825 in Ireland, daughter of Edward Dougherty. She married William McMonigle abt 1850 and all her 14 children are born in Philadelphia, PA. Many are buried in St. Anne's. Her children (the ones I can find) are; Thomas, Margaret, Edward, Mary, Ellen, William, Catherine, John, Charles and Alexander.

Do you see any potential connections? And, do you know where in Ireland your Dougherty's came from?

Nell

My 2nd great grandfather, Edward Dougherty, was born in Ireland in 1827 but not sure he's the Edward you referred to. He came to America in 1848, died in 1852 in Martinsville, Morgan Co., IN and I don't have any info that he was ever in PA. He married Margaret Carvill (Carville, Carvel) but I haven't figured out who his parents were yet.

Robert Dougherty annd Patsy Alberty - Re: Robert's lineage

Many, Many questions about the Dougherty line. Was Robert Dougherty a Cherokee of full or mixed blood? Does anyone know who his parents were? He apparently was an Old Settler said to have emigrated west under the Treaty of 1828 then returned east and later went back west prior to the Treaty of 1846. He enumerated or noted under RG75, E222 Misc Removal: September 04, 1851, a source I'm not familiar with.
My wife, children and grand-children are descended from Robert and Patsy and I've been at a dead end for many years. Any Help would be appreciated.

I was sent digital photos of Patsy Alberty and Rosa Catcher that were lost because of a lightning strike and if anyone would be willing to share any photos of Patsy and Robert or any of their descendants, particularly in the direct line to Rosa P.Catcher who married Bud Whitson I wopuld be very grateful.
Bill, Teresa's Husband

None of your group is in my direct line, although, as I have said before, all Doughertys, whatever the spelling, can eventually find a common ancestor. Your William is not James brother, William, not is he James' and William's father. For one thing, their father was named Sean (John), not William. The info concerning my direct line on ancestry.com for the part is wrong. Good luck searching!

I know its frustrating, but keep plugging away! Don't worry about the various spellings of our name -- they are still all Doughertys. James always spelled his name with an "o" but William used an "a". Sometimes the name in my family line is spelled "O'Dogherty." Make sure you do a phonetic search on Ancestry, but just because the spelling is weird does not mean that person is not in your family. If its any consolation, at some point in history, all Dougherty's are related.
