There is no differances in some cases.
My GGGrandfather William Douglass, his son decided he was Andrew Archibald Douglas and my Grandfather Was Stephen Andrew Douglass. It depended on how they wanted to spell it.
But I was told that Lord Archibald Douglas added an S to his family name, after arriving in America, to keep track of the linage.
