I am searching for the parents of George Douglass. He lived in
Cumberland County in 1760. His mother was possibly Elizabeth
Douglass. Did they come from Ireland? Thanks!

Lydia DOUGLASS Robert SPEER Indiana Ohio Illinois

I'm at a road block - dead end. Robert Speer (B-1819 in Ohio) married Lydia Douglass (B-1822 in Penn) in Carroll Indiana in 1843. They had 5 kids. Robert died around 1863 maybe in Illinois or Indiana??? Family moved back to Carroll County and might have been split up. She married Henry Saylor there. Can't find her after her after 1880, no grave, or anything about her family. Can't find Robert's grave, or any additional. He is the son of Theunis Speer and Catherine Ross - both from Maryland. I hope someone out there has some information. Please email me. I've been at this family for years!!!!

Charles Rolland DOUGLASS (1910-2003)

Charlie DOUGLASS
Inventor of canned laughter for television

Friday, 25 April 2003

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/charlie-douglas...

Charles Rolland DOUGLASS, sound engineer: born 1910; married 1941 Dorothy DUNN (two sons); died Templeton, California 8 April 2003.

The invention of canned laughter for television sitcoms such as The Jack Benny Show and I Love Lucy in the 1950s was welcomed by American producers but became an irritant to many viewers across the world who were not taken in by the fake giggles, cries, jeers, gasps, titters and guffaws. Charlie Douglass was the brains behind the "Laff Box", which was used to replace or enhance studio audiences. At the time, he was working as a technical director on live studio broadcasts for CBS television.

Born in Mexico to an American family who moved to Nevada when he was two, DOUGLASS graduated in electrical engineering from the University of Nevada and joined CBS radio in Los Angeles as a sound engineer. While serving with the US Navy during the Second World War, he developed shipboard radar systems.

Returning to CBS, he saw the potential for recreating on television the hilarity heard in classic radio programmes – or at least smoothing over the gaps left by studio audiences. He spent hundreds of hours extracting laughter and other audience reactions from tapes he had recorded. The result was a machine that stood 28 inches high and looked like an organ, with a keyboard that enabled the operator to choose the style, sex and age of the laughter and a foot pedal to regulate the length of each reaction.

The American comedian Jackie Gleason, star of the sitcom The Honeymooners, quickly made clear his opposition to laughter tracks. "I'd hate to do something on our show that was a laugh on someone else's," he said.

On DOUGLASS's retirement, his son Bob continued to run the family business, Northridge Electronics. In 1992, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented DOUGLASS with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy.

His contraption is now reduced to a gadget the size of a laptop computer and capable of combining up to 40 audience sounds – as well as laughs that are deliberately un-American.
William Douglass and Catherine (Katherine Skene) were married 4 Feb 1779 in Banchory Ternan. According to a contributor in Family Search this William Douglass was born 12 April 1762. Does anyone know if the William bo. 1762 is the William mar. 1779. There seems to be a number of possibilities and I wondered on what basis the connection was made.

Douglas DNA Project – Discounted Pricing through August 31, 2008

FamilyTreeDNA has announced discounted pricing in effect now through August 31st. I would like to encourage male Douglases interested in their Douglas ancestry to take advantage of this promotion and join the Douglas DNA project. You can read about the project and some of the early results at:

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Douglas

All it takes is a cheek swab and you may find a connection with one or more of the 80+ study participants. If you’d like to request a test kit you can click on the link at the top left of the above page. I would recommend the 37-marker test which is being offered at USD $119 (normally USD $189). Your DNA results could help you connect with other Douglases with whom you may share a common ancestor.

There is also a DouglasDNA group on Yahoo which you may want to join. You can reach the group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/douglasDNA/

I hope you decide to take advantage of this price discount and participate in the Douglas DNA study. There are currently more than eighty participants and several Douglas lines have been defined from a DNA perspective. If you have questions about the study I will certainly try to answer them.

Rob Douglas
Rhode Island

The “Lost” Pensions: Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838
By Craig R. Scott, C.G.R.S.
Willow Bend Books © 1996

p094
DOUGLAS, Jeremiah, -- , 49, #541-, card
DOUGLASS, James H., Ill., 118, #4574
-----------------
The Act of 6 April 1838

Chap. LVI – An Act directing the transfer of money remaining unclaimed by certain pensioners, and authorizing the payment of the same at the Treasury of the United States.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That all money which has been, or may hereafter be, transmitted to the agents for paying pensions, which may have remained or may hereafter remain, in the hands of said agents unclaimed by any pensioner or pensioners for the term of eight months after the same may have or may become due and payable shall be transferred to the Treasury of the United States; and that all pensions unclaimed, as aforesaid, shall be thereafter payable only at the Treasury of the United States, and out of any money not otherwise appropriated,

- The Public States at Large of the United Stares of America, From the Organizations of the Government in America, From the Organizations of the Government in 1789, to March 3, 1845, Volume 5.

Each entry contains the name of the individual, the pension office, the box at the National Archives in which the payment is contained, and the account number. The use of the words “card” and “slip” indicated that the pension payment voucher itself is not located in this series. Usually these placeholders indicate that the records were checked out and never returned.

There are multiple entries for many pensioners. This is especially true for widows pensions that are included in this series. It is important to examine all of the documents associated with each pensioner.

HOW TO OBTAIN COPIES OF RECORDS
NARA – it was $10 when this book was written, lol.

a/o = administrator of
c/o = children of
e/o = executor of
g/o = guardian of
h/o – heir of
s/o = sister of
w/o = widow of
V# = Voucher number
# = account number
#F = folder number
- = info not provided

Bill Douglas(s) in Arkansas

Still looking for information on my great-grandfather Bill Douglas(s) born about 1864 in either MO or AR. According to the marriage license Bill is listed as S.B. Douglass marrying Martha Jane (Pierce) Ritter on July 7, 1894. The 1900 census indicates that Martha is Widowed with two children Frances born 9/7/1898 and Pearl (my grandmother)born 6/28/1900. Based on what my mother tells me Bill died before Pearl was born while digging a well; however no one knows if his death occurred in AR or OK. It is believed that at the time of his death the family was living in Siloam Springs, Benton Co., Akansas. However, after checking the deaths for Benton County for 1900 there was no one by his name listed which leads me to believe that his occurred in OK. I have been stuck on this for several years now and really would like to get this side of my family back further. If anyone at all knows anything about this person please let me know, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick Scott

Obit: Kingman Douglass d. 2004

KINGMAN DOUGLASS- Helped revise state constitution
Chicago Tribune (IL) - May 9, 2004
Author: Li Fellers, Tribune staff reporter.

Without the efforts of Kingman DOUGLASS, Illinois might not have an income tax or a school board.

As a well-known figure in Chicago society and business circles, Mr. Douglass led a successful campaign from 1967 to 1970 to reform the state's antiquated constitution, said longtime friend and colleague George RANNEY Jr., president of Chicago Metropolis 2020.

"He was just doing that because he felt it was the right thing to do," Ranney said. "He was somebody who stood up for what he believed in and tried to get others to follow."

Mr. Douglass recognized that the state's constitution, last updated in 1870, was no longer relevant and hampered the government's ability to function effectively and provide necessary services. He volunteered his time and money to lobby and rally citizens, politicians and business leaders to support a constitutional convention to draft a new constitution and helped get it ratified in December 1970.

Mr. Douglass, 80, of Montecito, Calif., and Chicago, died Wednesday, May 5, of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the Brentwood Nursing Home in Deerfield.

Originally from Lake Forest, Mr. Douglass attended Yale University, interrupting his studies from 1943 to 1945 to serve in the Army infantry during World War II. He resumed his studies at Yale and graduated in 1948.

He married Marion PHELPS in 1949 and had five children. The couple later divorced.

Mr. Douglass lived in New York and several Midwestern cities while working for Dun & Bradstreet. He returned to Chicago in 1957 to work as a loan officer at Harris Bank.

He rose through the investment-banking world and held prominent positions with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith; Glore, Forgan, Staats Inc.; and Kuhn Loeb & Co. He also served on the boards of Dun & Bradstreet Corp., W.W. Grainger Inc., EFC Inc., Rahr Malting Co. and Kewaunee Scientific Corp.

He held leadership positions with the Commercial Club, University of Chicago, Children's Home and Aid Society of Illinois, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Douglass married his second wife, Leslie STONE, in March 1974.

He retired in 1981 and started KD Associates, a private investment counseling firm. The couple bought a second home in Montecito in 1992.

Mr. Douglass enjoyed playing golf, tennis and squash, and watching football, hockey and baseball. He also enjoyed music--the opera, symphony, Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman.

"He just had a manner about him that put people at ease. He was very gracious and had an outgoing personality," said longtime friend Dick Strubel, vice chairman of the education company Unext. "He became a dear, dear friend overnight."

Mr. Douglass also was known as a mentor to many. "He loved to identify talented people." Strubel said.

Mr. Douglass also is survived by three sons, Kingman, Timothy and Robert; two daughters, Louise, and Kathryn Greeley; two stepsons, Judson PASCHEN and Herbert PASCHEN III; two brothers, H. James and Angus; and 17 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Fourth Presbyterian Church, 125 E.
Obit: Margaret Douglass d. 2003

MARGARET DOUGLASS , 78 - Social worker once led Emerson House
Chicago Tribune - July 25, 2003
Author: Barbara Sherlock, Tribune staff reporter.

Margaret E. Douglass found the love of her life in the late 1940s when she moved to Chicago: her West Town neighborhood. She spent almost every day for the next four decades serving its people as a social worker at the local social services center.

"It was her life," said her niece Susan Quirk. "We all knew that. It wasn't unusual for her to miss a family dinner or holiday to be with someone in the neighborhood that needed her."

Ms. Douglass, 78, retired director of Chicago Commons' former Emerson House, died of a heart attack Saturday, July 12, in her West Town apartment. "Peggy was the glue at Emerson," said Ric Gudell, who was the center's director while Ms. Douglass served as one of its social worker. She became director when he left in 1983.

"She held everything together. She could work with everyone--other agencies, the government, citizens. If a client or staff had a thorny problem, they went to Peggy. She was the one who got the contact, found the person who could solve the problem and then she made sure it got done. Everybody in the neighborhood knew her."

In 1946, Ms. Douglass received a bachelor's degree in psychology at The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, her home state. While studying for her master's degree in social work at the University of Illinois' former Navy Pier site, she began working part-time with Chicago Commons, a non-profit social service organization founded as a settlement house in 1894.

After graduation, Ms. Douglass joined the organization full time, working for a short while at a different center before transferring to Emerson House.

About 10 years ago when Ms. Douglass received a small inheritance, instead of buying a home she used the money to establish a college scholarship fund with Chicago Commons for needy children, her niece said.

After she retired in 1989, Ms. Douglass became a liaison for the elderly in the city's 1st Ward office, pouring her energy into registering senior's to vote.

"She said everybody should have a voice," recalled her niece said. Two years ago, Mayor Richard M. Daley inducted her into the city's Senior Citizen Hall of Fame because of her contributions to her neighborhood.

Ms. Douglass served the same role in her family as she did in her neighborhood.

"Aunt Peg was the one that all the family turned to when a crisis came up, whether it was divorce, death or just being jilted," her niece said. "She was steadfast, telling us that nothing was insurmountable and helping us to come up with a plan to get through or past it."

It was better for them though if the crisis occurred on any day but Sunday during football season. "We rarely called her about anything on Sundays, because she would be watching the Bears on television." The same unspoken rule applied whenever the Chicago Bulls played, she said.

Ms. Douglass loved traveling and every winter spent a month in Treasure Island, Fla., her niece said.

Other survivors include her sister, Mary Patricia Anderson; two other nieces, Mary Elizabeth Lippert and Anne Brant; a nephew, James R. Douglass; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 4 in the Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St., Chicago.

Caption: PHOTO
PHOTO: Margaret Douglass.

Edition: Chicago Final
Section: Obituaries
Page: 13
Index Terms: OBITUARY
Record Number: CTR0307250077
Copyright 2003, Chicago Tribune

obit - Edmund DOUGLASS, 1820-1918

actually Edmund not Edward, married Harriett CURTIS

North Iowa Times – Feb 7, 1918, page 4

DEATH of EDWARD DOUGLASS

Edward DOUGLASS died Monday at Postville. He was two and one half years less than a century old. He has lived in Iowa seventy-two years. Fifty years of this time was in Clayton county, the remainder of this time just across the line in Allamakee county. When Clayton county had jurisdiction over all the land from Turkey river to the Canadian border, and west to the Rockies, he was the proprietor of the only store at the country seat, Garnavillo, and distributed mailto the handful of settlers who came riding in from miles over the prairie for the precious letters from back home. The mail was brought on horseback through the timber from Dubuque twice a week.

Mr. DOUGLASS was born in Chautauqua county, New York, July 3d, 1820. As a boy he came west to Illinois with his parents. After marrying at the age of nineteen, he settled at Galens, where he mined for lead. Cassville, Wis., to the north was booming and he abandoned his mining venture and moved with this family by steamer to Cassville. There he found there was frontier still further west and went across the river to the wilderness of Turkey River, Iowa, and out onto the prairie where a handful of settlers had driven their home stake at Garnavillo. A little later the California gold fever got into his veins and he joined the long caravan across the plains to the Pacific coast. But like most of the gold seekers he came back richer only to experience and he never left Iowa afterwards. Mr. DOUGLASS figured in many rules in the pioneer life of Northeastern Iowa. He was assistant Indian agent to the agent at Prairie du Chien and looked after supplying the Indians with blankets and other supplies. At one time he was deputy sheriff of Clayton county.

The last twenty years of his life was spent with his son, Reuben, a prominent business man at Postville.

Mr. DOUGLASS was the father of nine children. Seven are living: George, of McGregor; Mrs. Ellen CHAMPION, Belvidere, Ill; Mrs. Anna GATES, Fort Worth, Texas; Edward, Dysart, Iowa; Reuben, Postville, Ia.; Leveret, in California, and Mrs. Cora GATES of New York. There are twelve grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

The body was brought to McGregor Tuesday for burial here.
Dysart Reporter, Iowa 10 September 1925

IN MEMORIAN
Nina (MORRISON) DOUGLASS
Mrs. E. F. DOUGLASS, the subject of this brief memorian, whose sudden death was noted in the Reporter last week, was born January 4th, 1848 at Dixon, Illinois, her maiden name being Nina MORRISON.
She was united in marriage to Mr. E.F. DOUGLASS July 10th, 1873 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. They made their home the following three years at Necedah, Wisconsin, then taking up their residence at Postville, Iowa, where Mr. DOUGLASS was in business.
In the year of 1885, she came with her husband to Dysart, where they have since continued their home. Mrs. DOUGLASS assisted her husband in the conduct of his drug store here, and also assisted in the post office when he was postmaster.
Mrs. DOUGLASS was most active in the church, social and lodge circles of our city and community, being affiliated with the Presbyterian church. She affiliated with the order of Eastern Stars in Vinton, and later when the lodge was organized at Dysart, she became a charter member of the local Chapter. She was an honored Past Worthy Matron; having been presented with her jewel at the ceremonial program in February, 1923. She was also a charter member of the Hearthstone Circle of Dysart.
Mr. and Mrs. DOUGLASS were never blessed with children in their home, yet their fifty-two years of travel down life’s pathway have been happy ones. On July 10th, 1923 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, holding open house during the afternoon and evening, when a large number of friends called to greet them and wish them continued joy and happiness.
Mrs. DOUGLASS’ friend were numbered by her acquaintances, to know her was to lover her, and she will be greatly missed by the sorrowing husband, other relative and friends.
Funeral services were held from the family home in Dysart last Friday afternoon at two o’clock, being in charge of the Dysart chapter O.E.S., the order also having charge of brief services at the grave. The casket was banked with beautiful floral offerings, attesting the high esteem in which deceased was held.
Among those from out of town to be present for the obsequies were: Miss Marjorie BURLINGAME, Alhambra, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Thos GALLAGHER and son Douglass of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. C.K. STEVENS of Chicago, Mrs. R.N. DOUGLASS, son Ray and daughter Ruth of Postville, F.L. MORRISON of Minneapolis, the later being a half brother of Mrs. DOUGLASS. Mr. and Mrs. R.W. WAITE and Mrs. S. CREPS of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. John MARSAU of Traer, and Mrs. C.C. GARDNER of Des Moines.

APPRECIATION
At this time words are inadequate for my sincere expression for the many kindnesses which were extended to me by the numerous friends in my sad hour at the time of the death and burial of my dearly beloved wife. The many kind acts of neighbors and friends, the assistance of the O.E.S. members and other organizations, the singers, pall bearers, those who tendered the beautiful flowers, those who gave of their time and lent assistance in any way. I appreciate your assistance and I say thank you from the depth of my heart. E.F. DOUGLASS

Commodore Perry Douglass of Chariton, IA

I am looking for the whereabout of the above Commodore Perry Douglass. He was born on 29 Jan 1853 in Jackson Co., IN, the son of Noble and Louisa (Bales) Douglass. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Lucas County, IA. The last reported sighting is in the 1880 Census, where he is listed as a store clerk in Chariton, IA. After that, I have no idea where he went. He is not listed in his father's obituary in 1907, so he may have died by then.

John Douglas b 1700, d in Orange County, VA

Dear Douglass researchers,
I am descended of a John Douglas who was born around 1700, and lived and died in Orange County, VA. I've seen many family files posted which state that John was born to William and Grisheld (McKeand) Douglas in Edinburgh. In the parish records of Penninghame Parish, in the SW of Scotland, it shows that William and Grisheld did have a son named John. And William and Grisheld are buried in that parish cemetery.
However, how do we know that this John is the one that ended up in Virginia in 1730?
Has anyone ever found any documentation that makes this connection? There were dozens on John Douglasses born in Scotland around 1700 so I would be most appreciative of any information.
Thank so much,
Bev Sesterhenn

obit - Elizabeth (HAMILTON) DOUGLASS, 1787-1864

North Iowa Times, Sept 19, 1907 – TIMES PAST
DIED. At the home of Gilbert DOUGLASS, in McGregor, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 a.m., after a long illness Mrs. Elizabeth DOUGLASS, mother of Mrs. R. Noble, and Edmunds and George DOUGLASS, of this vicinity. The deceased was a venerable lady for whom all felt a deep regard, and her death demands more than a passing notice. Elizabeth HAMILTON was born in Vermont April 25th, 1787, and at her death was in the 78th year of her age just as old as the Constitution of our Country. She was married in 1806 to Gilbert Douglass, emigrated to New York in 1813, to Illinois in 1824 where her husband died, leaving her the care of several children. In 1845 she removed to this (Clayton) county, where she has since resided. The feebleness of her age added to the pains of disease were borne with a patience and composure that exhibited a consciousness of having done her part well in life and a confidence in a glorious eternity beyond the grave. May He who rules our lives guide us in that path which leads to the blissful future, merited by the worthy mother whose virtues we feebly commemorate
obit - Harriett Cass (DOUGLASS) NOBLE, 1826-1910

Her parents were Gilbert Denison DOUGLAS and Elizabeth HAMILTON

OBITUARY - North Iowa times, March 17, 1910

Harriet Cass (DOUGLASS) NOBLE
was born in Fredonia, N.Y., January 11th 1826 and died at the home of her daughter, in New Orleans, March 8th, 1910.
In 1831, she came with her parents to Illinois, and resided there until her marriage to Mr. Reuben NOBLE, in 1844. Later that year they came to Clayton County, and have always lived here, since August, 1844, being closely identified with the growth of the community.
Seven children were born to them, four of whom are now living, Mrs. J.F. DAY of New Orleans, Mrs. R.V. DAY, of Los Angeles, Henry NOBLE, of Seattle, and V.B. Noble, of Bottineau, N.D.
Her husband preceded her in death on August 8th, 1896, and since then she has continued to make her home in McGregor, tho taking trips to visit her children, or to spend the winter with her daughter in New Orleans, as she was doing at the time of her death. The remains were interred in New Orleans, but later they will be brought to her old home for burial beside her husband.
It is with the deepest regret that we learned of the passing away of this “Grand Old Woman,” and yet when we view the past labors and life work of her, whose age (84) exceeds the settlement of the County; who has resided in Clayton County for over 65 years; who has shared the toils and troubles and privations of the early settlers, the rise, progress and prosperity of Iowa, we must feel that it is but the natural ending of a well spent life.
Mrs. NOBLE came, with her husband, the late Reuben NOBLE, to Jacksonville, now Garnavillo, in 1844, and from the first her strong intellect and personal qualities gained the respect and admiration of her fellows. Always considerate for the weak and wayward, cherishing the noble and the good, she became a moving and abiding agent for good. She was the first Post Mistress of Jacksonville in 1845 and 1846 and was an official both obliging and efficient. It has often been said that the personality of Judge NOBLE, his love of justice and peace, his efforts to settle disputes of all kinds on a peaceable and equitable basis, has leftist imprint, upon not only the Bar, but upon the people of the County, and it may with equal truth he said that the influence of Mrs. NOBLE for justice and integrity, for kindness and hospitality, for wise counsel and womanly graces, has left a strong impress upon all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
From Garnavillo, Mr. and Mrs. NOBLE moved to a farm on Pleasant Ridge, and lived there for many years and until they came to this city to make their home.
obit: Edmund Douglass - 1820-1918

I asked the Barker Historical Museaum for info on Edmund Douglass, specifically, his birth. They didn't have that, but I did get this :)

I’m thinking this might be from - Postville Herald-Leader
Postville, Iowa

OBITUARY

EDMUND DOUGLASS

Was born in Chautauqua county, New York, July 9, 1820, and died at the home of his son, R.N. Douglass, in Postville, Iowa, Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 1918, in his ninety-eighth year.

In 1831 he moved with his parents to Jersey county, Illinois, where in 1839 he was married to Harriet Curtis. Together they traveled life’s pathway for more than half a century, she dying February 18, 1897. To them were born nine children, seven of whom are living-George of McGregor, Iowa; Mrs. Ellen Champion of Belvidere, Illinois; Mrs. Anna Gates, Fort Worth, Texas Edward F., Dysart, Iowa; Rueben N., Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Cora Gates, New York City; and Levertt S. of California.

Mr. Douglass was engaged in the lead mines at Galena, Ill., in 1845, and the following year came to Iowa, settling first at Garvavillo, where he was employed as clerk. He afterward purchased a portable sawmill in connection with his brother which was operated at Clayton. They purchased the first steam engine used in Clayton county. In 1858 the lure of the gold fields lead him to California, where he worked in the mines three years. In 1859 he was engaged in a sash and blind factory at McGregor and later owned and operated a stave factory in Clayton. Returning to McGregor he was in 1870 appointed Deputy Sheriff which office he held in connection with Deputy U.S. Marshalship until 1880. In 1886 he left MrGregor, living on a farm on Suttle Creek, Allamakee county, for a period of seven years, from there removing to Postville in 1893 where he has since lived.

The funeral was held from the R.N. Douglass home Tuesday morning at tem o’clock, Rev. Hadwin Williams, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating, after which the remains were shipped to McGregor on the noon train for burial by the side of his wife.

In this connection, the family wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their kindly assistance and sympathy at their time of affliction.

Obit - Daniel W. Douglass - 31 May 1868

The Fredonia Censor, Chautauqua Co, NY
10 June 1868 issue

In Houghton, Mich., May 31, Hon. Daniel W. Douglass, formerly of Fredonia, aged 74 years. See obituary notice in local column.

[local column]
Death of Daniel W. Douglass – In this number of the Censor we record the death Daniel W. Douglass, Esq., which occurred on the 31st of May, at Houghton, Michigan. He was born in New London, CT: April 14th, 1794, and was above 74 years of age at the time of his death. He was one of the pioneer business men in this county, having settled in this village when only a boy, in the year 1811, being a member of the family of his brother-in-law, the late Jacob Houghton. Mr. Douglass continued in active and extensive business in this village for quite half a century, and few men in western New York were more widely and favorably know. To the early settlers he extended many favors, and encouraged them in the long, laborious task of clearing these heavy timber lands by giving them credits on his books and securing a market for the first and cheap products of a new country, then beyond canals and railroads. But few men, who truly knew him and were in trade during those trying and early days in the history of the county, survive him. We
