Betty,
The William Douglass you speak of is the son of Captain David Douglass who was the son of William Douglass of York County, PA. This William Douglass was born on August 4, 1815 in Miami County, Ohio and died on April 25, 1909. I assume William died in or near Logansport, Indiana. I have the same information you have on William's 3 marraiges, but I do not have a Sarah Douglass as William's daughter? Captain Douglass lived in PA, Ohio, and Indiana and his son William and to my knowledge never lived in VA, but Sarah could have been born in the area of upper Virginia between Ohio and Pennsylvania near Wellsville, Ohio. That is where my GGGG Grandfather (and Captain Douglass' youngest brother) James Douglass lived for a few years in the early 1800s. There were several Douglass families in the counties surrounding Logansport and she could be from one of these other lines or my records could be incorrect.
William,

Who is the descendant of Robert Douglas b. 1588 who has undergone DNA testing? I am interested in the dis-proof you mention about the father-son relationship between Robert b. 1588 and William b. 1610. I have never seen any conventional genealogical proof of this relationship. Yet, it is widely reported on the Internet.

Ed Douglass

Hello Joan, Please see my response today to Phyllis Dutton Wildeman. It will answer some of your questions.

I can follow your line to John Douglas and Sybil Merill but run into a problem with their children. Wasn't Rhoda Samantha Douglas the daughter of Robbins Douglas and his second wife, Catherine Nelson? Robbins was the son of John Douglas and Sybil Merrill. Have I got this right?

If you would like to give the details from Rhoda Samantha Douglas up to you, I will add the information to my database and send it back to you if you would like.
Hello Phyllis,

On a quiet Sunday (for a change) I have been going back through e-mails, looking for ones to which I did not respond. Yours was one of them (from June 2009).

I am in the midst of the group that is focused on William Douglas, b. 1610. The group members can claim to be descended from William. We based the claims on conventional genealogy and, in the case of many of the males, on DNA testing. Our interests, however, are broader than just William and there is a strong spirit of sharing.

I have a data base with a little over 3,700 Douglas/ses and spouses. Let me know your interests and will share what I have.

I have added your line to my database but am missing a lot of information since Hannah Douglas, the daughter of William Douglas and Hannah Mansfield. Fill me in if you are willing.

Best regards,

Ed Douglass

Sorry Wendy - the closest I can get is in Ohio, but it was in the 1950s and they came from Penn through Ill.

So you only know a couple of the states? what about obits of the ones you do know? or maybe marriage notices in the newspapers. Do you know their religion? Familysearch's pilot version has images of these, so you would have to go through it page by page

Collection Description: Images of parish registers recording the events of baptism, first communion, confirmation, marriage, and death in the Diocese of Toledo (Ohio), Roman Catholic Church. In addition to traditional parish registers, this collection includes miscellaneous cemetery records, Books of the Elect, Professions of Faith, Sick Call registers, etc.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

julie

I'm pretty sure I'm related to you as well. About 98 percent sure. My gggggg grandpa was James Douglass (1755) born in Coldingham, Scotland. Then we go to his son James Douglass (1789-1860), his son Robert Douglas (1827-1909) who later moved to Canada with his wife Eliza Ann Smith, Then thier daughter Allison Douglas married James Winch. I'll just name the Winch son's line I'm descended from here down. James Robert Winch, Lee Winch, Melvin, Wayne, and then Me. I'm trying to learn house numbers where our Scottish ancestors lived. I haven't been able to find free census records where I can try to find these guys yet. All I know is that James (1755) was a Blacksmith in Renton, Dunbarton, Scotland. Anyone have pictures from here? Anyone have cemetary pics from here as well? If not, as soon as I'm able to (maybe 10 years from now) I will go there. I wish I could leave tomorrow! : )

Donna,

I have more detailed information about John Douglass and Sybil Merrill if
you need it.

John and Sybil could not have married in 1842. That was the year of John's
death! It is more likely that they married in about 1798. Their first
child was born in 1799.

I have 10 children listed. I have birth dates and places and most death
dates and a couple of death places.

I have followed their one male child - Robbins - who survived into
adulthood. There was another son - Henry Poole Douglass - who died at about
age 4.

Would you like to compare notes?

Ed Douglass
FTDNA kit no. 78870

A correction on the relationship...Anna Douglass was an AUNT of Cherrie Douglass and not grand-aunt as I previously posted. Anna was a brother of Robert Beech Douglass (1839-1911), who was Cherrie's father. I also forgot to mention that Anna and Cherrie had a 17-year age difference. Anna was born in 1861 and Cherrie in 1878.

Anna Douglass -- Wolcott, NY

I'm looking for any information on an Anna Douglass, who was born in 1861 in Wolcott, New York. She was a dughter of Jabez Remington Douglass (1808-1893) and Catherine "Polly" Rood (1810-1890). I believe that she may have been the second wife of Frederick E. Rose (born 1872) as I was told that the maiden name of one of his wives was either Douglas or Douglass. If this is the case, Anna was most likely previously married as well. According to census records, in which the years differ on a couple reports, it seems that the Anna married to Frederick Rose was roughly ten years older than him. Anna Douglass was a grand-aunt of Cherrie Addie Douglass, who was the wife of Frederick's brother Giles Herbert Rose.

From what I've seen on census records and newspapers articles, depending on whether or not I have the correct person, Frederick Rose was in prison (as well as being fined) in Rochester around 1900 for federal tax evasion in regards to liquor sales. After serving his time, he returned to Syracuse and lived with his father Eugene and first wife Josephine (born 1874). I don't know her maiden name right now. Frederick married Josephine in 1890 according to census reports, but the two must have separated sometime between 1910 and 1920. When his father died in 1920, Frederick was still living in Syracuse but was married to Anna. The two had moved to Huron by 1930, probably due to both having immediate family in Wayne County. I'm not sure when either one died, but I believe that Frederick passed away between 1930 and 1943 as he was not listed as a surviving person on the obituary for his other brother, Charles John Rose.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

I already looked on Fulton History and wasn't able to find too much of anything on Anna Douglass.

As for her father, Jabez, he is listed on a number of U.S. Census reports but I couldn't find him anywhere on Fulton History. There are also a couple of other sites online that have him listed but for some reason not Anna.

From what I have, Jabez and Polly had at least eleven children (possibly twelve)...Phillip, George, Robert, Leona (Livonia), Sarah, Reliance, William, Anna, Minnie, John and Emma. I notice two children actually named William, but I think that one may be a middle name. I'll have to look more into each of the children. Robert Beech Douglass was my 3rd great grandfather. The parents of Jabez were Warner "Dominic" Douglass and Charity Remington.

Re: Anna Douglass -- Wolcott, Wayne county NY d/o Jabez Remington Douglass

Okay - I looked on all of the online books I know of for Jabez (figured his would be easiest to find) and couldn't find him - even not in the 1879 Douglas genealogy book. Do you have more info? maybe her grandparents?

Be that as it may, you mention newspaper articles, so I'm assuming you have asked for obits, etc. I've got some stray Douglases in Genesee and Chautauqua counties, NY and someone suggested this website -
http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html - it talks about more than just Fulton county, and sometimes will give you the history.. Maybe it will have your Anna DOUGLASS (1st?) ROSE? Just a thought. I'm kind of new to NY searching.

I hope it helps
Julie in CA

a DOUGLASS family who moved to Missouri in 1800s

Hi, I'm looking for information on a DOUGLAS/S family who moved to Missouri from NY. Daniel DOUGLASS and his wife Helen nee WATKINS are on the 1968 St. Louis City Directory, and 1870 census, then Pueblo, CO in the 1880, and back in Missouri for the 1900, he as a widower in Kimmswick Village, Rock Township, Jefferson Co., Missouri.

They had 3 children that I know of, but I can't find them on the 1860 census so....?
Edwin born about 1847 and died in Pueblo, Co (I've sent away to NY for an obit which will hopefully tell me more.)

Henry W. born about 1852 in NY, married Maggie (Margaret?) JOHNSON in Clark county, MO in 1878. They had 2 children William P born about 1876 and Helen born about 1878.
I loose William after the 1910 census in Jasper Co., MO
I loose Helen after the 1900 census when she's living with her grandather Daniel in Jefferson county
Henry I loose after the 1900 census in Jasper county, where he's listed as a widower.

Daniel and Helen's third child Helen died in 1871 in Coulterville, Mariposa Co., Calif. Daniel's brother Gilbert was living out there at that time, so I'm thinking she went to visit.

if any of these sound familiar please let me know. Thanks

Julie in CA

I only get a a
port with Wi-Fi very infrequently. Also, my laptop computer
is not the one on which I have all my genealogy stuff. So,
please wait until I get back home and have a chance to dig
out from under the accumulation. Then we can compare notes.

If this message gets lost in cyberspace and you don't hear
from after about 2 weeks, e-mail me again.

Best regards,

Ed

If you click on Surname List Finder, then type in Douglas you will see the ones it pulls up. There is Douglas with 1 and 2 Ss. you can browse through the archives to see if it's something you would like to join, and of course you can always leave.

Sometimes I join lists, and other times I just post to the message board, if it's something I want everyone to see, or a collateral line. Its all what you prefer.

There is also a Douglas DNA list (you don't have to be a DNA donor to be on the mailing list) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/douglasDNA/ That's also how I know Ed. Its my great grandmother who was my Douglas and I don't know any of that family - Ed is my 9th cousin, lol - so when they find out anything about his ancestors, it's about mine too :-)

I hope that helps Joan
cheers
Julie

You have the information on Sally and Joel Rouse incorrect.
Joseph Rouse and wife, Susannah Railsback had a son, whose first name is not known. The records at the Hebron Church in Culpeper (later Madison Co.) have a gap. Their son, Joel Albert, married Tabitha Uts in 1814, the same year Joseph's grandson, Joel Albert Rouse was born in Madison. His birth is not listed either. Rev. Paul Hinkel's diary gives the date he christened Joel at Joseph's house. Joseph's son married Susan Ann, maiden name unknown. Joseph, his second wife (Magdalena Tanner), Susan Ann and Joel Albert (grandson) moved to Boone Co., KY. Susan Ann married Thomas Magruder (McGruder) in 1817. In 1820, Joel went to live with Joseph by court order.

Joel married Sarah (Sally) Pitcher July 3, 1833 in Boone Co., KY. About Oct. 1833, Joel, Sally, Joseph, and Magdalena moved to Warren Twp., Indianapolis, IN. Joel purchased 80 acres. Joel and Sally had five children: Hiram Jack, Louis Napoleon, Kesiah Elizabeth, George J., Harrison T., and Charles Benjamin. Joseph died between 1840 and 1850.

What is your connection to the Rouse family?

Anita
I have been researching William Stuart Douglass, John Huston Douglass and Granville Nichols Douglass. I have photos of the last two as well as photos of Atwater Lincoln Douglass that I'd love to share. Please let me know if you are interested.
