My gr.grandfather John A. Barnitz married Mary J. Douthat in 1857 in Christiansburg, VA.
In looking into John A. I came up with the following that maybe of interest to others, and you may be able to answer some questions.
In the 1850 Montgomery Co. VA census is listed:
Douthat, Henry G. 35 M blacksmith
Eliza 34 F
Mary J 13 F
William H 10 M
Cynthia A 5 F
Douthat, David G. 45 M wagon maker
Mary A 37 F
Robert W 10 M
Lucy 7 F
Douthat, Robert 71 M
Mary 71 F
In the first entry, Mary J married John A Barnitz.
Are Henry and David brothers? Is Robert their father?
Also in Pulaske Co., VA is listed:
Douthat, John H 34 M blacksmith
Margaret 32 F
James H 12 M
William B 10 M
Jonathan B 8 M
Robert S 6 M
Sarah F 4 F
Mary E 2 F
Is John another brother of Henry and David?
In the marriage bonds you find:
David G Douthat/Mary Adams 15 Nov 1836
Henry Douthat/Eliza Baylor 21 Apr 1836
John H Douthat/Margaret Burk 24 Jul 1837
Robert L Douthat/Frances Adams 30 Mar 1835
David Aker/Frances A Douthat 20 Jun 1839
I also found in the 1870 Bland Co. VA census:
Douthat, W.H. 30
Mary A 26
Mary W 1
In Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, VA, you will find
David G. Douthat 25 Dec 1804--18 Mar 1880
Mary A. Douthat 10 Feb 1813--27 Dec 1880
In death listings: Robert Douthat Sr. died 9-19-1861 in Christiansburg, was thrown from a buggy, 82 yrs old, reported by D.G.Douthat,son.
And lastly on the wall of the Christiansburg Library is a map titled Gray's new map of Christiansburg, no date, but I think about 1880.
On the south side of Main St. across from where Rock Road (now called Radford, I think)
is the lot of D.G. Douthat.
I hope this helps someone.
I hope someone can tell me if Henry was a brother of David and possibly John.
