Look under the 1910 census for Perry County and you can see under the Martindale family for McCool township that Florence, Delbert and Mary were boarders of theirs then. This must mean Grandpa Douthit was not living then. Not sure.
Yes it is very interesting. I have limited information and would love to know more. Grandpa Douthit's name probably was William and his nickname Bill. Bill is what is on his monument at the cemetary. My mother always told us her parents died when she was very young and she and her siblings were raised as orphans by a family in Perryville. I have heard my Grandfather died first and Grandma Douthit married a Lavell from Perry County and then when she died they must have been raised by some of her Stepfathers family. Do not have any information on great-grandparents but would love to know. I do know Grandma Douthit was a Jones when she married. Please let me know if you find anything and thanks for the info you passed along to me.

I found 1870 census data: http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ar/perry/1870/p...

If I'm reading this stuff correctly, it looks like there were two Douthitt families in Perry County (McCool Township). This census data is transcribed, so I don't know if that accounts for the difference in spelling...

John Douthitt (Blacksmith) 39 yrs old
Provitt A Douthitt (Homemaker) 25 yrs old
Catherine Douthitt 14 yrs old
Martha F Douthitt 9 yrs old
John W Douthitt 5 yrs old
Mary Douthitt 3 yrs old
Pricilla Douthitt (census says 6/12)

James B Douthitt (Farmer) 42 yrs old
Mary Douthitt (Homemaker) 36 yrs old
John Douthitt (Farm Laborer) 12 yrs old
Nancy Douthitt 9 yrs old
William Douthitt 6 yrs old
David Douthitt 4 yrs old
Catherine Douthitt 61 yrs old

I believe that the 6 year old in the 1870 census was our great-grandfather that married Florence Jones...It makes sense, since they named their daughters Nancy and Mary...

After hours of searching (I'm a determined computer nerd :)...) that Bill's full name may have been William R Douthit.

I found 1870 census data: http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ar/perry/1870/p...

If I'm reading this stuff correctly, it looks like there were two Douthitt families in Perry County (McCool Township):

John Douthitt (Blacksmith) 39 yrs old
Provitt A Douthitt (Homemaker) 25 yrs old
Catherine Douthitt 14 yrs old
Martha F Douthitt 9 yrs old
John W Douthitt 5 yrs old
Mary Douthitt 3 yrs old
Pricilla Douthitt (census says 6/12)

James B Douthitt (Farmer) 42 yrs old
Mary Douthitt (Homemaker) 36 yrs old
John Douthitt (Farm Laborer) 12 yrs old
Nancy Douthitt 9 yrs old
William Douthitt 6 yrs old
David Douthitt 4 yrs old
Catherine Douthitt 61 yrs old

This is really fun! Yes we always called your grandfather Uncle Pat. His parents, my grandparents, were Bill Douthit and Florence Jones Douthit and are buried by my mother Mary Douthit Blair at the Nooner cemetary at Hollis, Arkansas where Uncle Pat and Aunt Grace are buried.

He had a brief cancer battle a few years back, but he's been fine for a while.

I started looking this stuff up again after I lost my laptop...and a file with a lot of this information in it...

I never knew your uncle, my grandfather. I think it confused me when you said Pat :), but after talking to Mom this morning, that was his nickname.

Dad says that he never knew his grandparents' names, so I've ran into a roadblock trying to research this stuff.

Do you have any information pertaining to African-Americans with the last name of Douthit. What I had previously learned was many slaves once emancipated commonly used the last names of their masters. With the exception of my family(based in Alabama) I have only met 1 other AFrican American with the last name Douthit. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I did not see the DeWitt name in any of the information I have. The Douthits were in South Carolina in the early 1800's but not until then. I have never seen the name Douthit/Douthet spelled "Douthel" But, I guess it is a possibility. Good luck with your research. I have just about completed mine on the Douthit family, but it has taken several years.

Hopefully this is still a good contact.

I am Linda DeWitt Hughey and I am searching for information on an Ellen Douthel/Douthit. She would be from the Southern Douthits and born around 1730???. My 5x great grandfather, Martin DeWitt married an Ellen Douthel/Douthit in the mid to late 1700's. Martin immigrated from Virginia to South Carolina in the mid 1700's with four sons, one of which was my 4x great grandfather, Captain William DeWitt of Society Hill, South Carolina. Martin and Ellen both passed according to sources in 1793 in or around Florence, South Carolina. We do have the name Douthel carried on as middle names in some of the DeWitt descendants. Was this possibly a misspelling of Douthit? This would have been Martin DeWitt's second wife.

I would really appreciate any help or feedback. I have hit the "wall"!!!
I am trying really hard to find something on Enoch Douthit.
I need to document his birth date of 5 Aug 1782 and that his parents were John and Eleanor Douthit. I am satisfied with what I have. But, For DAR I need to prove the connection from Enoch to His father John Jr.

Had I know about your book, I would have liked to buy one.

I have everthing from Enoch down thru my family; and from John Jr. back to John Sr.

I will share my information if you are interested.

Thank you for your reply.

Susie

Londonderry and York Robert Douthit's

I'd like some input on a theory. Not much to base this on, however.

There's a Robert Douthitt in Yorkshire, England, with four kids, born 1698, 1700, 1704 & 1707.

Then there's a Robert Douthit from Londonderry, that everyone knows as the European root of American Douthit's. The "irish" Douthit has four kids according to many trees, born 1708, 1709, 1711, 1713. According to most trees, his wife is a Mrs. Mary Hedge.

Well, the first daughter of Robert Douthitt in Yorkshire (Clifton to be exact) was also named "Mary" (she died at the age of 1 according to church records.)

So, we have two guys with four known kids each, without any conflicts or record (such as one kid born in Londonderry at the same time as another in York) and, at a time when ALL kids were basically the same 5 names, we have all the children with different names. (By odds, chances are one of the boys names would overlap.)

I therefore suggest that maybe they are one in the same. The family moved after England took over Ireland, then set off abroad. Motivations for why someone would lie and say they're from Ireland as opposed to England could be many reasons: Creditors, annoying family, etc.

I just find it a bit odd, that there isn't anything conflicting these two locations. York activity stops, just when Ireland activity starts. Thoughts?

I believe I have a piece to this puzzle that might help others. First though, thank you so much for posting the information on my Hill family. I couldn't figure out who Elizabeth Hill's parents were and you answered my question.

I descend from Jacob Douthit and Elizabeth Hill Douthit's daughter, Catherine, one of the girls listed in the Moravian Archives. Catherine married Edward Daugherty 4 October 1808 in Warren County, Ohio. Her marriage license record was transcribed as Caty Douthel, but I have a copy of the original and you can see it's Douthet. Edward and Catherine moved to nearby Preble County, Ohio by 1822 and by 1840 they were settled in Henry County, Indiana. Their son, Thomas Daugherty, married Sarah Caroline Reed there in 1840. On the 1850 census you'll see Edward Daugherty and family in Delaware County, Indiana and Catherine is listed as being born in North Carolina in 1791. Edward Daugherty died in 1856 in Delaware County, Indiana. I can't find a death date and place for Catherine.

My Thomas Daugherty has a lovely obituary and it was from that I learned of his connection to the Hill family.

Again, many thanks for posting the information on Elizabeth and Thomas Hill's parents. That made my day!
Hi David. The information I have is not proven with primary documents. However, I show wife #1 as Harriet McMahan, according to Trimble County (KY) marriage records cited in "Wakonda, South Dakota Centennial 1885-1985, Pine Hill Press, 1985". That record shows Willis' name as "William", so I'm a little suspicious.

According to my records, wife #2 is Harriet Anne Monroe. The source is Jefferson Co., Indiana, Marriages 1851-1855 Index found at http://www.myindianahome.net/gen/jeff/records/marriage/mde.h....

My wife's line is from wife #1, via son Thomas Jefferson Douthit.

James Douthit (1782-1837) m. Priscilla Peebles, d/o Nathaniel Peebles of Davidson Co., NC

I am of no kin nor am I doing research on this family, I do NOT live close by these graves I have found, BUT I do research and have found that LITTLE info that I am about to share MAY help someone find their ancestors graves.

Recently my wife and I took a trip to Etowah Indian mounds in Bartow Co. GEORGIA Cartersville )

I noticed a what appeared to be new bricked in walled area on a hill with just a peak of a monument sticking from top of the brick walls, we stopped and I climbed up the steep bank to find numerous graves, there were more than just
Priscilla Douthit grave markers there, some was the ground slabs as I call them, the little bricked in area was too grown up for me to walk in wearing shorts and sandals, a string trimmer or machete could clean it out easy in 45 minutes.

I do > NOT < know if the Priscilla Douthit buried there IS the one in the subject line, further cleaning of the grave lot may uncover her husbands grave etc.

the following is brief description/directions to the graves:

Take Douthit Ferry Road and cross Old Alabama Rd.

IF you do a mapquest or look on a old map you CANNOT cross Old Alabama Rd. it on mapquest and other maps is a DEAD END, but NOW Douthit Ferry Road crosses Old Alabama Rd. and goes into a farely new subdivision.

As soon as you cross Old Alabama look to your left up on the hill you will see the brick walled encloser, on your right will be a sign about a new Publix business to be built soon on corner across from the small cemetery.

Hello there, I've been reading all the information about the Douthitt family which is fascinating......my mother-in-law was Irene Woolard Hodges. I was married to her son Kenneth Hodges. I compiled a genealogy report back in the late early 1980's on the Woolard family. Recently I received an inquiry from a woman out in California inquiring about her great great great grandmother, Nancy Woolard (born 1855 ARK) who married James F. Shipman May 5, 1882 in Stone Co., ARK. Their son was Erwin S Shipman She believes this Nancy to be full blood Cherokee Indian, daughter of a chief, who was resuced from the Trail of Tear by a Woollard family. Have you or anyone in the Woolard family ever heard this story? I'd like to be able to help this woman. My email is musicalsamcam@cox.net if anyone can help. Thanks, Sarah

Cheryl: I too have not been digging for information on relatives for a couple of years but ambeginning to get interested again.

For me there was a bunch of confusion regarding the two wives of Issac Taylor Woolard. His first wife. Mary Thompson, was the mother of Archibal, Horace and David Walker Woolard (grandfather of Joan Peck and me). Your OMA DOUTHIT COTTON was sister of SARAH IDA LEE DOUTHIT WOOLARD,
wife of David Walker Woolard. Sarah Ida Lee was grandmother of Joan and me.

Mary Cadorah Littleton Woolard doesn't enter into the above
equasion except as a matter of interest inasmuch as she was the second wife of Issac Taylor Woolard.

Both women having the same first name is where the confusion begins.

All I can find out about both is that Mary Thompson Woolard is buried in an unmarked grave at Dardanelle,Arkansas, and Mary Cadorah Littleton Woolard is believed to be buried in Oklahoma - somewhere around the Okemah area.

Hope this sheds a little light on the subject.

Georgana

Re: Littleton S Douthit

Littleon Smith Douthit was the son of David Andrew Douthit and Martha Jane Booth. David born Anderson Co. TX. md 1885 Milam Co.TX.,d 1930 Lubbock Co., TX.
Littleton b Mar 1890 TX, probably Milam Co. md 1911, Olney, Young Co. Tx Martha Almina West. Litleton d 17 Jun 1922, Plainview, Hale Co. TX. The David Douthit family moved a lot, so nothing definite on where children born other than in Texas.
Littleton was a brother of Andrew Toy Douthit who died Odessa, Ector Co., TX. Recently began researching the Douthits lineage for a granddaughter of Andrew Toy Douthit.
Quite a bit on this line's ancestry on Ancestry.com. There are some obvious errors and questionable claims on some of the family, but at least a good place from which to start working.
Evidently there is proof of the immigrant ancestor coming in the 1700s from Ireland into PA and settling in Maryland. This line evidently went from MD to the Carolinas, then to TN before coming to Texas.
Hope this helps.
Shelba

Littleton S Douthit

I need help looking for more information on Littleton S Douthit. I've done a little research using his son's name, Sidna A Douthit. Sidna married Martha A West. From what I've gathered, Littleton's father was David A Douthit who was married to Martha Jane Booth. I need more information on Littleton. If you could go back further, that would be great.
