Hi. My name is Mark Douty. Henry Baldy Douty was my fifth great-grandfather. The names comes down from Henry to John, George, Reuben, Frank, Charles and James, my dad who was born in West Virginia. John had a son named Andrew that moved to Colorado in 1861, maybe he's the ancestor of the Douty's in Oregon. I was born in Seattle. My dad got out of the Navy after WWII in Washington and stayed.

Douty, Benjamin or Ben

I am searching for information on my wife's great-grandfather, Benjamin Douty, believed to have been born in Tennessee.

According to 1900 US Census for his daughter's, Ida Mae Douty Buchanan, father's birth place was Tennessee. She was living with her grandparents Jesse J. & Margaret Cotter at the time, which coincides with the word-of-mouth info that Ida's mother died when she was a baby and her maternal grandparents went to OK and got her, supposedly because her father was "in the war." Census records show her mother's (Lucretia Lucrecy Cotter) birthplace as Texas. Her mother was Born 30 April 1870 in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, and died 12 Nov 1885, believed to have been in Indian Territory, OK, since that was Granny's (Ida M.) place of birth.

My wife's aunt, now in her 80's, remembers Granny's father visiting her as an adult, and that he had remarried and had other children but does not recall their names or where they lived at the time, probably in the 1950's or 60's.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

We have been looking for Margaret Doty (Douty, Doughty) forever! We have that she married Joseph Utter in Westfield, NJ & she was born about 1741. They migrated to Penn. to old Ft. Redstone (Brownsville) & then on to Ohio, along the Ohio River. They could have been married in NY about 1753, or it could have been July 30, 1759??? Joseph was born about 1733 and served in the Revolutionary War. They had children while in Penn. and some in Ohio. Two of them were: Joseph, Jr. and Douty Utter (my gr-gr-gr grandfather, who later became a Col., as well as OH State Senator). He and Margaret both died in Ohio (Clermont Co.) and are interred at Woodhill Cemetery.
If you can find anything at all that might pertain to Margaret, I would appreciate it so much. Maybe there's a link somewhere, who knows?
My e-mail: RANDJB@JUNO.COM
Thanks & Good luck!
Jan Beedle
Franklin, Ohio 45005

Thanks for your help. It is interesting that in the family line the name had been spelled Douty, until my great, great, grandfather legally changed it to Doughty. He did so after a teacher told him it should be spelled that way.
I doubt that I will find out any more about my ancestor Thomas Douty born about 1630, but it is nice to know that he could have been from Scotland.
Thanks,
Mark & Heather
Montana, USA

Hi Mark,

The Douty name is probably a corruption of Doughty and as such does appear in the Scottish records mostly in Southern Scotland. There are about six Doughtys in the Edinburgh phone book

The name probably derives from middle English meaning valiant.

Hope this helps,

Graeme
Edinburgh

I have an ancester Thomas Douty, born about 1630 that was believed to be Scottish. He was probably captured in either the Battle of Dunbar or the Battle of Worcester. He was sent to America as an indentured sevant. Does anyone have the book :The Surnames of Scotland by George F. Black, or other similar Scotland Surname guides? I am wondering if Douty is listed as a Scottish Surname? Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.
Heather

I was looking th the Douty-Smith book and found a few similarities: Found on pages 58-65 of the book.

You were looking for a "Jennie Smith Eaton."
You also said there were 3 pallbearers T.H. Douty, E.E. Douty, and Wm. Douty.

My GG Grandfather was Rubin Douty. He married Sabina Smith and they had 14 children. Three of the names were Tomas Henry Douty, William Douty, and Elmer Ellsworth Douty.

Sabina had a sister named Sarah Jane Smith 11/25/1840-1918. (Buried in Highland Cenetery in Lock Haven Pa.) She Married Mark Eaton and had 8 children.

their 6th child is named Jennie Lowell (only info:) married Jack C Ewing and had 1 girl (Leora Idella, who marries J. Bertrand Smith.) There are a few coincidences to your inquiry.

( It caught my eye because my Dad was also an E. E. Douty and his dad was also a Wm Douty) e-mail me if you need anything more.
Our ancestor is Sabina Smith, daughter of John Smith, and Sarah Hecker. Her siblings were Marianne, Stephen, Sarah Jane, Willoughby, John Henry, William Matilda, Samuel, Elizabeth, Harriet, and Edwin. She did have sons, Thomas Henry, Elmer Ellsworth, and William among others. She was married to Reuben Douty. Perhaps these were nephews to your Jennie but one of Sabina's siblings would have to be Jennie, and I don't see that name listed. Maybe it was a nickname? Sabina was born Jan. 7, 1838.

Yes, there should have been a comma. I also typed my own name wrong. That is what you get when you are in a hurry. Also, A.H. Douty was probably Albert Hayes Douty one of the other brothers.

According to Mrs. Rosa Smith Young, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt, came from Germany to America, probably around 1800. However, Sabina who was born 26 years before Rosa, (Rosa was her half-sister) said the Smiths came from Holland. The Bible used by their father was a German Bible. My father-in-law always talked of remembering his grandmother's accent, which was very strong Dutch. You know the Pennsylvania Dutch. John Schmidt (Smith) was born on January 16, 1810 and died July 16, 1883. He married Sarah Hecker March 15, 1835 in South Whitehall township, at Ironton, Lehigh Co., PA. Sarah Hecker was born Sept. 16, 1811, died July 31, 1855, and is buried in the Evangelical Cemetery in Loganton, PA. Perhaps this helps some.

You may be able to get the Douty information from Bucknell University in Lewisberg, Pa. They have a copy in the Special Collections Dept. I wrote and got alot of info on the Smith Hecker line associated with the Douty line from Reuben Douty. They are very nice people and didn't charge for the copies. This book was written in 1974.
