I am looking at Lillaoma Dover as my ancestor. She may be my ggggrandmother. Neoma Dover b. 1845 in Licking, Missouri married James M. Reed who was b. Oct 1828 in Doe Run, St. Francois, Missouri. In 1870 census for Arkansas, Marion, Rapps Barren there is a Oma Read (short for Neoma) with her husband James Read. I believe that Lillaoma and Neoma may be the same person. I have been stuck on the Dover line. I would love to share info.

Thanks,

Robert J.
Satirah Whitley

I believe I have located Satirah Whitley on the 1850 and 1860 census.

Here is my reasoning:

The first born son of James J. Dover and Satirah Whitley Dover was named Adam Floyd Dover. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was common in those days to name the first son after the paternal grandfather. This led me to search for someone named Adam or Floyd Whitley. I discovered the following on a Whitley message Board:
*****************
The last will and testament of Henrietta Whitley
In the name of God Amen
I Henrietta Whitley, Spinster of the state of S. C. and district of Anderson, being weak in body, but of a sound disposing mind and memory and knowing the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for man once to die do constitute and ordain this my last Will and testament and manner and form following.
And first of all, I bequeath my soul to God, and my body to the grave. To be buried in a decent Christian like manner by my executives hereafter named and as for what of the things of this world which it has pleased God to bless me with.
I will that they be disposed of in manner and form following and first I will that all my lawful debts be paid.
After which my three daughters (to wit) Jamimah Whitley, Nancy Toler and Esther Whitley shall enjoy and peaceably possess the track of land where I now live.
I also Will that my three daughters as above named do pay to my son Adam Whitley the sum of fifteen dollars to be paid in such produce as they can make from the farm: and have it to spare without injuring themselves as to their own support.
I also will that my son George Whitley be allowed to live on the land where he now lives and if necessary he may clear so more land in addition to what he now has in cultivation – the land that he may clear to be on the North side of his present farm or otherwise on the West side so as not to obstruct the farm bequeathed to my three daughters as above named and when he leaves the premises to have no claim or demands to anything done by him on the part that he has occupied.
And as for the payment of my debts, I Will that my three daughters above named shall dispose of any thing that can be best spared for that purpose.
And I do hereby constitute and appoint the above named as Jamimah Whitley, Nancy Toler, and Esther Whitley the sole Executrix of this my last will and testament and I do hereby disavow and revoke all other wills made heretofore by me.
I do acknowledge this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereinto set my hand and seal of our Lord 1832, in the presence of Alex Moorhead, Walter Poole and William Poole.

Signed; Henrietta “X” Whitley
Mark
South Carolina
Anderson District (Witness statement at Probate) kaw
Personally appeared, Alexander Moorhead and made ----- that he did see Henrietta Whitley make her mark as her signature to the foregoing as and for her last will and testament and that he believed at the time of her signing the dossier that testatrix was of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding and that Walter Poole and William Poole ------ were with himself subscribing witnesses to the form and that they all signed in the presence of the testatrix and each other.
Sworn to and subscribed before me this 31st day of August AD 1859
Alex Moorhead
State of South Carolina (Probate Document) kaw
Anderson District

In the court of Anderson, I Herbert Hammond, Ordinary of Anderson District hereby certify that this foregoing last Will and testament of Henrietta Whitley deceased was this day admitted to probate in common form on the oath of Alexander Moorhead esq. one of the subscribing witnesses to the same, and that on the same day Esther Wilson qualified as Executrist and obtained letters testamentary.
Given under my hand and seal this 31st day of August, 1859.
Herbert Hammond OAD

Her son George is in Habersham Co GA 1840 & 1850 then to White Co GA (only about 15 miles away)
Her son Adam (my line) was in Pickens SC 1840 and came to Habersham GA by 1850 and then was in Walker Co AL by 1860 and was back in White Co GA by 1870

Nancy was living with daughter Elizabeth in Anderson SC by 1850 - Elizabeth married Nimrod Mitchell and she goes to TX.

I believe one of George's sons becomes a Dr in either Alabama or Texas.

**************************

With that information I searched for Adam Whitley in the 1850 census in Habersham. What I found was "Adam Whittey", which appears to be a transcription error. Looking at the original image I believe it is actually Whitley, and his wife's name is Catherine, and they have a daughter named "S. J. Whitley" who is 9 years old. Also his brother George is living next door.
I then looked for the 1860 census in Walker County, AL. There I found Adam Whitley and his wife with a daughter named "Sattisa", which is again a transcription error. Looking at the original image, I believe it should be Sattira.

Jim Robb (Married to a Dover descended from James J. Dover and Satirah Whitley)

Hi Karen,

I will paste a paragraph from an email I recieved about 2 weeks ago from someone else regarding Hannah.

I have George Dunn as Hannah Dover's husband, or, I think, actually just partner (he later married another Hannah, possibly Morton) . George was born in 1841 at Thirn, near Leyburn, Yks. Hannah was born Newcastle or N Shields, 1838. I have them as having children William, George, and - another William! Which is why I am a bit confused by this family, though I think I solved this in the end.

What do you think? I have jusr read it again and it could be possible that he is the father of George as that is his name also. Not to sure if he could be the father of both. The other thing is George was also the Father of Hannah so that has me wondering lots.

I have emailed the person how sent me the original email about Hannah and asked for any info they have on her.

Could you tell me what you know please. Hannah is/was a very interesting person thats for sure.

Take care

Tristan

Hi Tristan
I also have Hannah born in 1838 in North Shields. The family was originally from Appleby, Westmorland and I believe her parents were George Dover (b app. 1807, St Lawrence, Appleby) and Ann Swinglehurst (b app. 1811 St Lawrence, Appleby). Her father's parents were William Dover and Hannah (surname??).
Hannah had two sisters, Elizabeth (b app 1836) and Jane (b app 1842) and a brother, William, born app 1841. I expect there were more siblings. In 1851 Hannah was 13 and had moved to Calder Vale in Garstang with her mother and siblings. Her father, Geoge was not with them and Ann is listed as Head of household. I think I have found her father George in 1851 in Alston, Cumberland, lodging with a family with other men all working as rail labourers. (All the details fit).
By 1861 the family were back together, now in Kearsley, although Hannah was lodging in King Street Farnworth. Her parents George and Ann and her sister Jane lived in Blair Mop, Kearsley. George is now a carter. Similarly in 1871, George, Ann and Elizabeth (unmarried daughter) lived together in Blair New Road Kearsley.
In the 1881 Census George and Ann were living at 8 Moss Road, Kearsley, with Elizabeth.
I have never found any mention of George Dunn and would love to have the source of this information if your contact gets back to you. I would be relieved if the father wasn't the 70 year old William Hodgkiss that Hannah lodged with in King Street, Farnworth!
I have the birth certificates of Hannah's two illegitimate children, William (b 1861) and George Thomas (b 1864 - my relative). I haven't found any evidence of any other children until she married Henry Williamson (b app 1844, Prestolee). Hannah and Henry certainly had 5 children, possibly more. I have Robert (b app 1870); Henry (b app 1876); Edmund (b app.1879); Margaret and Elizabeth - probably twins (b app 1880).
The Dovers and Williamsons became further entwined when Hannah's son George (my relative) married Henry Williamson's brother's daughter, Abigail Ann Williamson, who lived nearby in Prestolee.

I expect you know much if not all of this, and if you have any other information I would love to know more. I do have more recent information on the families and their descendants if you are interested.
Regards, Karen
