Jackie,

Interesting! Which of Pickett Sanford Chapman's daughters was your great-grandparent? My father (Samuel Mozley, 1914-2009) kept up with most of their descendants.

Daddy's first cousin Eloise Chapman, daughter of P.S.'s son Robert, was the most interesting Chapman relative I knew. She never married, lived to age 103, loved to dance, had a great sense of humor and sharp mind to the very end, and I was at her 100th birthday party at Christian City nursing center in Union City, GA in 2002.

P. S.'s granddaughter Louise Landers Sappington of Hapeville was my sister's piano teacher in the 1960's.

I didn't know P. S. was partly Native American. Perhaps it was his grandmother Elizabeth (b. about 1780 in SC, maiden name unknown) wife of his grandfather David Chapman. How do you trace us back to the Cherokees?

Sam

Hello Roger
This is not Diane but Beverley(Takuingoa)replying. My mother was a Dowdle, descended from Richard Dowdle born 1776 in Halbergate Devon, married Honour, date unknown. As far as my info at the moment goes, their children were James chr 1801, Sally chr 1803, William chr 1806 and John Hill chr 1811. My line is from John Hill who married Mary OLIVER in 1833 in Colan, Cornwall. Their 10 children were born between 1833 and 1856, all in Cornwall, one of these my gt-g'father William who came to NZ via Australia following the gold-mines. Haven't as yet found a Thomas, but if you find a connection to the Cornish Dowdles I'd love to know!

hello Diane, On my wife's side I have a contact with Leicester Clarence Dowdle b Canterbury, New Zealand 1895. Through the NZ BMD now online I have traced his grandfather to be Thoams Dowdle who was married to Jane probably in England. I have traced a Thoams Dowdle marrying Jane in Barnstaple in 1851 on FreeBMD. Could this be a connection with the Dowdles you are refering to.

Kind regards, Roger Willoughby

I am a in a direct line from this couple. I believe he is sometimes listed as Capt. Archibald Todd. They immigrated to the US in 1773. THeir children that I am firm on are Archibald Todd, Srah Jane Todd, and Adam Todd (from whom I descend)HE was born in 1781. There has also been listed a Robert Todd born in 1783, as well as Andrew TOdd and William Todd, some of which may be children raised by Archibald Todd. Adam Todd married Mary Warnock. It can get confusing because Archibald (II) married a McAlister and sometimes the lines get mixed up in things that I have found. Dr. James ANson Todd was the next in my line and he was born in 1928 and I have seen where he was in Confederate army. He married Mary Caroline Gilmer. And so it goes. I have some other names and dates.

Mary

REWARD OFFERED - DRAKE/DOWDLE Marriage record

I am willing to pay a $50.00 reward for the marriage record of William Drake and Margaret Dowdle which comes from an official record source – church or town vital records. The record must include the names of both parents of the groom and bride, the date and locality of the marriage and the locations in which each resided prior to the marriage. Your submission must be a photocopy, photograph or scanned image of the record(s) you offer either by mail or email (JPG file, 300x300dpi minimum). Your source for this record must be identified for certification.

The Tombstone record of William Drake reads “who departed this life June 10th, 1842, aged 80 years, 11 months and 27 days” giving a date of birth of 14 June 1761.

The Tombstone record of Margaret Dowdle reads “who departed this life December 3d 1848, aged 80 yrs 2 mos, & 18 days” giving a date of birth of 15 September 1768

The marriage year suggested is about 1791. It is expected this marriage was recorded somewhere in the states of New York or Pennsylvania.

I have record of these two people landing at Newark/Fort George, the seat of government for and in Upper Canada in 1794 and subsequently receiving a grant of 200 acres in Walpole Township, Haldimand County in the Colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario, Canada) in 1796.

If, in your search, you can add the birth record for the said William Drake, including convincing evidence tying the birth and marriage records together as for the same William Drake, a further reward of $100.00 is offered. Again, your submission must be a photocopy, photograph or scanned image of the record(s) you offer either by mail or email (JPG file, 300x300dpi minimum).

I may be contacted by email at philipgross@norcross.ca

I'm looking for anyone who may have ancestors related to this gentleman. He a mulatto who was classified as a Blake on the 1920 Census, married to Belle Thomas (maiden name). For whatever reason, my then Great Grandmother changed her last name from Blake to Dowdle and I can't piece why she did this. I found a reference to a Ben G. Dowdle on her SS inquiry, so I'm more puzzled than ever. I would love to find my Dowdle people and close the mystery to why he left or was taken away from his family. It's been debated in my family for years. Do you have the missing piece to the puzzle? Please post if you can; I'm looking for brothers, sisters, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nephew...you get the point. The family was living in Cherokee County, South Carolina.

Thank you!

JWD was born around 1820, probably in another county or state, married Ann Elizabeth Gibbs around 1840, and had children Clara Louisa Elizabeth (my great-grandmother, who married Pickett Sanford Chapman), John D., Jim, Caleb, Lovic Pierce, and Sarah. I only know Clara's birth date, 11 March 1851. JWD was probably buried near Kingston, Floyd Co., GA, but I cannot find grave records or vital statistics on existing Web sites. Can anyone connect me to other Dowdle branches?

Robyn,
Hello from Texas! I am not related to the Dowdles but do have a Confederate soldier buried in our family plot ( Young) at Parks Cemetery.
His name is David Martin Dowdle. This cemetery is located outside of Wells, Texas (Cherokee County). I do not have all of his regimental info at my fingertips at this moment, but do have it written down here, in with my geneaology info. I am of the understanding that the Sons of Confederate Veterans in the Cherokee County chapter has info on him. He has a Confederate military headstone. I will try to get the additional info located for you if you are interested. This is a beautiful old cemetery with very old graves. I will take pictures, next time through there and be happy to e-mail to you as well.
Please feel free to e-mail me if you are interested.
Thank you.

Yes, this is my ancestor. I was hoping that some member of a Dowdle family might have a marriage into the Rowland family previous to 1780 that might give me a clue to my Dowdle's mother or mother's family. Often male children got first names from their mother's line and I thought that might be where the Dowdle came in. We've looked for so long for parentage for this man and his siblings that I'm grasping at anything that might give us another clue.

I found a few other references for that family name in Nelson County in deeds etc.(no Alexander though) I will get you those if you'd like. An interesting entry in Nelson County Marriages 1785-1800 (NCGR) is:

DOWDES, William & BROWN, Sarah, Bond: 15 Oct 1796 Married 17 Oct 1796
Signed Bond: John P. Brown
Both over 21
Married by Joshua Carman, from Minister Return

They were married the day after Alexander & Joanna and the same person signed the bond.

Julia,

Thank you for your response.

I would appreciate those other references you mentioned, for that family name (regardless of it includes Alexander). One never knows where a clue will turn up <grin>

Thank you for mentioning the William "DOWDES" who married Sarah BROWN. I have a photocopy of the Marriage BOND.

On my copy, where his name is shown at the top of the page, it only goes to William Dowd... The very right side of the page, and, thus, the rest of his surname are not in my copy. His signature at the bottom is "Wm Dowd...", and as fate would have it, the rest of of his name is covered over with the squiggley "seal", so it is really impossible to tell what was actually written. My gut feelings, though, are that Williams surname was probably DOWDLE, DOWDAL(L), or DOWDEL(L).

Thank you again for your reply.

Judy

I was very interested to read your message. My great great grandfather was also William Dowdle and my great grandfather was John James Dowdle, Joshua's brother. I have information on the family going back to 1776 and would be happy to send it to you. I have a christening record for William which states he was christened on 16 July 1837 in Colon, Cornwall. Father - John, Mother - Mary (nee Oliver). William's father John (John Hill Dowdle), born 1812, Colan Cornwall died Gympie Australia. Married Mary Oliver 25 August 1833. Mary was born 16 February 1813 in Egloskerry, Devon. John Hill Dowdle remarried on 24 March 1861 to Jane Salmon in Colan, Cornwall. john's occupation was farmer. John's parents were Richard and Honor Dowdle born around 1776. I have lists of all siblings and quite a few records downloaded from the internet. However, I have a lot of gaps. I am particularly interested as to when my great great grandfather John James Dowdle came to NZ. Any info greatfully received. Also, I believe there were four brothers from Williams marriage to Elizabeth Chipman, John, Joshua, Henry & William. Do you know if this is correct? Information on them would be appreciated. I have some but still have gaps.

Re: Dowdle in the United Kingdom then New Zealand

My great great grandfather was William Dowdle, born in St Columb, Cornwall abt 1838, married Elizabeth Ann Chipman in Truro Cornwall in 1877. They then emigrated first to Queensland Australia (my grandfather Joshua was born in Gympie in 1886) then came to New Zealand. William and Elizabeth both died in NZ. I'd be really interested in information on William's and Elizabeth's ancestors in Cornwall and earlier.

Verdin / Verdon / Dowdall

I have been reseaching the Verdin / Verdon family.
I have got back to Theobald Verdon who married Mary Broom in 1764 in Liverpool. Theobald gives his occupation as mariner.
On his marriage license he put up a £200 bond and this was guaranteed by Patrick Dowdall a woolen draper fron pool lane in liverpool. I can find no record for the birth of either Patrick or Theobald in Liverpool. Since both families seen to be prominent in county louth I wonder if any body knows of any links between the verdon and dowdall families
Many thanks
Graham Verdin
