Received the following from my Dowell Family Site:
My opinion is the name is Tandy Dowell not Landy although Ancestry lists him as Landy. He is on the 1850 Rockcastle KY census and if you scroll through the census taker's handwriting his L's look like L but his T's are not crossed and have a squiggle and so also look like L, but that's his T. There is a Tandy Dowell 1850 Knox TN and Ancestry trees are mixing them up but they are two different people.
Interesting, Jeff's name is Crouch and on the Stevens thread that I brought up I had mentioned a Claunch family, kind of out of the blue, and now I wonder if the name should have been Crouch.
I found a genealogy that noted William Smith m. Emeline Dowel 1854 Pulaski KY. He was 22 she was 17. wit. I.H. Gridler and T. Elliot. Min. Jonathan Thomas, res; Walker W. Haley, Elizabeth A.Haley guardian and consent. A genealogy has Elizabeth as maiden name Terell. A note also that after the 1850 census the children are scattered about for some reason throughout Rockcastle. Either working for people and living there or Tandy was not able to care of them. My note; I don't know when Tandy and Nancy died but perhaps the children were scattered about because they had become orphaned.
1850 Rockcastle Ky Tandy Dowell b. 1801 VA. Nancy b. 1809 VA. Bird- 15 KY; Emeline 1837 KY; Mary-11; Elizabeth-9; Richard-5; Permelia-2. One tree has a marriage for Tandy Dowell: Tandy Dowell 17 Feb 1834 Alb VA Nancy Dowell but I don't find this marriage in any of my marriage books or at the Family History Library site so I don't know where that information was referenced from.
William Smith, Emeline's husband, is interesting as one linked in tree has the family going to Golden/Golding and I know Dowell connects to Golding in VA too. Also, John Golding 1640-1734 married Elizabeth Ripley. My gg grandfather T. P. Payne (b. Louisa VA) married my gg grandmother Elizabeth Ripley b 1870 Bath VA. Also, on this census are Burton and Preston and these are names that link with some Payne around mine in VA.
I wonder if there is a connection from Emeline's husband's Smith family to George W. Smith in Alb. who married Gilly Dowell. (There are some Smith living today near Gilbert Station Rd along Preddie Creek, Stony Point Alb. nearby The "Dowell House" ahem, located at 3100 Gilbert Station Rd.- wonder if they belong to the earlier Smith family in Alb who married with Dowell).
If you look on World Connect under this Tandy Dowell there is one geneaology that has some notes on Emeline's sister Mary's family.
1830 Pulaski KY censu lists Ambrose Dowell b. 1790 to1800 (married Martha Patsy Ping 1814). The idea is that Ambrose is the son of Richard and Franky (Bullock) Dowell with Richard being the son of Ambrose, and he the son of LP JD. There is also John Dowell on the census b. 1760 to 1770 and I imagine this is John Dowell who married Elizabeth Bradley. (I have no records to back my opinion up - I am relying on other's research before me and my own logic looking at the census).
