I too am reasearching this family line. Dell(Homer Dell McSchooler) was my great grandfather. As to their Children I can verify Melvin Norton (my grandfather). Although I am just starting and have not found any census records with other children the names you posted sound like family names that go with my family line.
Also I want to double check that I am reading your post right... Are you saying that Florence Dowell Married James France Barnhart? I had a Aunt Lucille married to Jim Barnhart which would be your Uncle Jimmy if I am correct. And Your dad and Uncle would be my granddad's 1/2 brother.

Hi Roy,

long time no speak (we discussed Flint Dowells in 2004!)

I've just renewed for a month to see what's new and updated.
I'm still at a wall with my Thomas Dowell b.1803 who married Margaret Williams (they're on the 1841 census) but then I suspect he died sometime over the next 10 years as she pops up married to another bloke in 1851 with the kids in tow with surname Dowell.
Gotta love a family mystery!

I would LOVE to be able to connect with other Dowells from Flintshire. My early lot seem mainly from Meliden / Prestatyn.

Happy to chat if anyone thinks we have details in common.

xxx Sioux

The Isaac you are researching is the son of Isaac W. Dowell, born in Tenn. in 1830. He married Mary L. Holiday on Sept. 7, 1854, in Saline Co., Illinois. Check out the 1870 Missouri US census. He is transcribed as Isaac N. but should be Isaac W. and he appears in 1880 US census of Greene Co., Ark. Isaac Jr. is shown as being born in Missouri. I have not been able to locate them again in the US census since we do not have the 1890 census and the 1900 census, they are not there so am searching cemeteries for them. Isaac's son, Edward Jackson Dowell, is the person I am researching. Would like to hear from you to compare what we both may have. juliem1922@sbcglobal.net
John McClary in Louisa County, VA by 1775, sold land there in 1782 and was by that time in Albemarle Co, VA. He was married to Mildred "Milly", surname unknown. John and Milly sold land in Albemarle to John Dowell in 1800. John McClary's son, Robert, and wife Mary, sold land in Albemarle to John Dowell in 1808.
In Albemarle Will Book 5 p. 204 John Dowell of Albemarle County, Virginia, will Dated Feb 6, 1812 and proved 3 Aug 1812 mentions wife, Nelly Dowell
"estate of every kind real and personal to have and hold during her life to rase all her small children on and at her death. It shall be at her own disposal...
Wit: Isaac Sims, James X Ceaton, William X Davis" Then in
Albemarle Will Bk. 5. p. 283 John Dowell of Albemarle Co
Inventory date Jan 9, 1813. Produced June 9, 1813
Administrator: Robert McClary. In Albemarle Co Deed Book 18, page 468, 1813 Robert McClary of Sumner Co, Tn appointed his father, John, as attorney to "to do act and transact all kind of business in my name within the said State of Virginia but more especially to receive collect and grant receipt for all moneys by him received of any person or persons whatsoever ______ of still due me from the Estate of John Dowell dec'd"
Also, another Robert McClary or McAlary, married Mildred Dowell in 1805 in Augusta Co, daughter of John Dowell and Ann Franklin. I do not know if or how this Robert, son of Hugh McClary, is related to my McClarys. These McClarys lived in Augusta and/or Orange counties Virginia, I believe and are next to Albemarle Co.
My John McClary of Albemarle was, as stated earlier, married to Mildred. Is there a family connection between my McClarys and the Dowells of Albemarle?

Even though your post was made in 2001 I am hoping you are still a member of Ancestry.
On this post you have given the lineage of Riley Dowell. I am 4th generation.
Abraham Berry; Junius Riley; Junius Harold and Bevia Ann Dowell.
The 5th & 6th generations on my side would be Angel Marie & Michael Stilwell; 6th: Bryan & Jackson Long; Lily and Abby Stilwell.
I have a older brother, Barry Edward and two younger sisters, Karen Lynn and Pamela Sue. Barry has three children; Barry Neal, Tonya Gayle, & Joseph Riley: There are seven grandchildren and one on the way: Chelsey & Nickolas; Dexter, Blake, Trever; Hannah, Emma and one.
Karen has never married.
Pamela has two: Kari & Zack.

Riley Dowell was the child of Littleberry and Rachel Sipes. They married in 1816. He had a brother, James Corbert.

George Wesely's mother was Elizabeth Adkission. I have yet to find a birth, death or marriage date on her. They had another son but no name or date was given. This was from a book by Norman Payne. "Payne and Related Families" He did allot of research on this book I believe it was about five years. People have added notes to correct and to add new which he does not mind as long as they have the proof to back it up.

If you are not a member maybe someone else will read this I have researched other member of Micajah's family though they may not be correct. I'll be happy to share and will gladly accept corrections as long as there is proof to back them up.

So glad to get your reply to my post! And I would love to learn more. Much of my information is from and elderly aunt who lived from about 1900 to mid-1980's. She remembered Charles Pickett Dowell and his wife, Nancy Frances Hall Dowell and told us many stories of them. Both of them died in early 1900's. Would love to hear more about the DNA project on the Dowell lines.

Best regards, MaryAlice Corder
This Dowell line has been very confusing. Fortunately, DNA has allowed us to sort it out.

I and many other Dowell researchers had long thought that the Dowells who were in Maryland by the 1690s and the Dowells who flourished in Albemarle County VA were related. Some Dowell had gone down the James River and up the Chesapeake Bay or vice versa. DNA now tells us that the two groups of Dowells are not biologically related within the last 3,000+ years. However, one branch of the Maryland Dowells, migrated from Southern Maryland to a corner of Albemarle County, VA quite removed from the "Virginia" Dowells. That is the branch under discussion here. The William Dowell who married Sally Pickett was the son of "Maryland" John Dowell -- so called in Albemarle tax records to keep him distinct from all the other John Dowells in the county at the time. It seems the tax collector had a hard time keeping them all straight too. There also were a lot of William Dowells in both groups. Thanks to DNA we can now sort this out with some confidence.

If you are interested in finding out about U.S. Dowells, I would be happy to invite you to a password protected Dowell Family History website at MyFamily.com. In order to invite you My Family requires the following four pieces of information: Given Name, Surname, Gender and email address. I don't really get the Gender requirement but it is a requirement.

You could help us greatly by helping us get in touch with a living male Dowell who might be willing to take part in our Dowell Surname DNA project. We had found a handful of English Dowell and none of them matched any of us Colonials. Anyone interested in either or both endeavors may contact me by email: InfoDoc@DDowell.com

I'm also a retired librarian. I have lots of information on the Dowells in NC. This line came from MD right after the Revolution. Robert's wife Ella is listed in the 1920 and 1930 censuses as being born in 1889 or 1890 in NC. I can't find an Ella Wynns who are the right age. There are a couple in Martin County---one of whom is adopted; but they are a few years younger if the censuses are to be believed.

I am searching for a Susan Dyer/Dowell, born in Mississippi in probably in the early 1840’s, died between 1871 & 1877. She married James Washington Owens between 1860 & 1865, his second marriage. I believe she was the mother of Jesse Edgar 1865, James Lafayette 1866, Muky Mailly 1868, Robert E. Lee 1869, Samuel Rufus 1870, & Minnie Florence 1871. Death certificates in Hunt County, Texas, for James L. and Minnie list Susan Dyer as their mother. Certificate for R. E. Owens lists her as Susan Dowell. All of the children were born in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, except for Minnie Florence, who was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi.

According to what I have found, it would be Francis "Big Ben" Armitage who came from Ireland, Newtown Mills, Tipperary, Ireland and died in Ontario in 1839. He was the so of "Old William" Armitage also from Newtown Mills, Tipperary, Ireland. Richard John, his son was born 6 November 1807 in Tipperary Ireland and also died in Canada. He was married to Mary McMurtry. I have a household record from the 1881 Canadian Census that shows the following
Richard Armitage, Age 75, born in Ireland married to Mary
They had Francis, bn 1841, James, bn 1844, John, bn 1846. Mary Ellen, bn 1860, Richard bn 1857, Serah Jane, bn 1854 and Lucy Lydia bn 1866 ( I also am showing on an Internation Genealogical Index that ther was an Isabella, bn 1855, a Lucy bn 1868, and a Lydia bn in 1868 (and then on something else I see a Lucy Lydia bn 1868 so I don't know if there was one or two girls) and a Matilda bn in 1871. These were all born in Pontiac, Quebec

Dear Siouxhealer,

I have been trying to link up the Dowell families in Flint for some time with some success. My great great grandfather was Morris Dowell (1813 - 1876) who married Jane Williams (1810 - 1864) in 1835. Their children were Jane, Margaret, William, Ellen, Mary, Job and Edward. William (1842 - 1924) was my great grandfather and he married Margaret Jones (1836 - 1908). They moved to Holyhead in (about) 1881 when my grandmother Frances Jane Dowell (1871 - 1958) was about ten years old. William and Margaret's children were - Frances Jane (Fanny) Dowell, William Morris Dowell (1872 - 1924), John Edward Dowell (1874 - 1875), Mary Ellen Dowell (1876 - 1947) and Sarah Ann Dowell (1877 - 1911). I have received some information about the parents of Morris Dowell my great great grandfather but have not been able to verify the evidence myself. I would be most grateful if you could share your research with me. Surely all those Dowells must have a common link somewhere. Is there a more direct way of communicating with you? I am more than happy to reveal my identity but am advised not to do so by this method.

yours, in anticipation, 123mamyndalpry

Thank you for your reply. Ella is also in the 1900 census living with her maternal grandmother Susan Lane in Morganton, Burke County. I can't find any trace of her in the 1910 census. I'm hoping to find that her father was Coke Hill Wynn, Jr. Thus far no luck. This is the information I have:

Ella Mae Wynn Dowell
b. 12 Sep 1889
d. 4 Oct 1975
widow; lived at 26143 Dacian St. , Winston-Salem, NC
died at the Manor Care Nursing Home
burial at Woodland Cemetery in Winston-Salem on 6 Oct 1975.

Someone tried to find an obituary for her but said there wasn't one. I'm rather surprised at that. I do know that sometimes obits are delayed in being posted and am not sure how many days out this individual searched.

Any suggestions or information would be appreciated.
Gini Pohlman
trgini@hotmail.com

Dinah, if you are still out there, we could certainly share some information, as my Dowells are also from Wilkes Co. in North Carolina. My grandfather was John Fielding Dowell, brother of Charles Wilson Dowell and Alonzo Franklin Dowell. Their father was Frank (actually Benjamin Franklin) Dowell, born about 1859 in Wilkes Co., NC. His father was Francis A. Dowell, born about 1834 in NC. Benjamin Franklin Dowell's wife: Mary Elvira Baker, born 15 July 1858. I am so excited to know that someone else is researching Dowells in the same area. I have not been able to get past Francis A. Dowell, and my information on him is sketchy. Could you please share with me anything you have found out, and where I should look further?

My email address is mamapapa96@mchsi.com. Please respond, and I will send what information I have collected, which is readily available to you too. My brother and cousins from the Dowell line are living. But I am wondering whether they want males who actually have the last name of Dowell for the DNA studies. My mother was a Dowell, and the cousins I am acquainted with are connected to the Dowells through their mothers.

Write soon, Dinah, or anyone else who can share and/or point me in the right direction to extend my information.

CJ
