St. Louis Dower's

All, I have spent many hours researching the Dower's living in St. Louis around 1855 to 1900. There were several family lines that I have not been able to tie together but researched each one. If you have Dower's that lived in St. Louis during that time please feel free to email me at jbriggen@ymail.com. I will be happy to share what I have found.

Hi Penny,

Sorry haven't really been doing this for a while. I'm just a uk member at the moment not sure i'll upgrade though. I have found and Edward Dower coming into England age 2. If you leave your email addy then i'll email you the document. This Edward was born c1889 Australia and his mother is listed as Mrs H Dower age 40, and sisters Johanna age 8 and Sophia age 5. This is the first time i have had a hint in ages regarding Edward and Australia and i paid to see this so dont spend money yet lol.

Oh i have a connection with someone in Australia who was chairman of a genealogical society so will ask him to see if he can chase this up his side.

well wishes,

sarah

Hi Karen,

I came across your message by chance late last night. I certainly really want to 'chat' about the DOWER connections.
(J.C. is nickname).

I hadn't looked at this area of my FH for a while, and now have some time available through enforced convalescence from hospital.

When I originally posted, I was in Canada, but am now in Scotland - different time zone ....

If you go to:-

http://gatheringcraigs.proboards82.com/
http://gatheringoforrs.proboards89.com/index.cgi
http://ourmissinglinks.proboards83.com/index.cgi

You can see what I get up to.

Have you come across a Shea Sullivan? She appears to be researching the same/similar family members.

I cannot email you as you have gone 'private', but via here or one of my forums we might be able to arrange something.

I look forward to hearing back from you, assuming you remain interested. I need to say, I'm so glad I saw your message. Last year was rather difficult for me on the 'net so I did miss a lot.

Best Wishes.

Dower Family

I am still researching the Dower family and have made some connections to the Dower's in the United States. Here is some info from my records:
James Herbert Dower b. abt 1773 was from Sussex, England. He was the 1st Dower to come to Newfoundland and claim land given to the Dower family from the King of England. His grandson James Edward Dower b. abt 1822 in Newfoundland moved to the United States abt 1920's. James Herbert was married twice. Once in France and had 4 children. One child John b. 1813 (my husband's 2nd great grandfather) and his 2nd marriage was in Newfoundland. From the 2nd marriage there was a son Edward (father of James Edward Dower b. 1822)

Jacob and Anna (Brand) Dower/Dauer

I am working on putting together the family of Jacob and Anna (Brand) Dauer/Dower. They lived in Washington twp, Wood County, Ohio near Tontogany. So far I have found 11 and maybe 12 kids: Anna E., John, Julius, Christian, Mary, Charles, Frederick, Emma, Jacob, August, Adam and maybe Adolph. I have information on their cemetery locations and tombstone inscriptions. They were buried in Union Hill Cemetery in Wood County, Ohio. I've found this family group in the 1870 and 1880 census. I have been unable to locate them in this area in 1860 or 1900 so far.

I also know some about Anna Brand's parents, Adam and Catherine (Hof) Brand.

Does anyone have any other information they'd like to compare?

Hi Lynsey, My father-in-law Frank lives in Newfoundland, Canada. Some of the Dower family from Conche did leave here and move to the United States about 1920 or so. It would be great to make connections since there are not a lot of people with the Dower name.

Hi Sandra,

My nephew's wife's father, Pierce Dower, appears as an infant in the Newfoundland 1921 Census at St Julien (St. Barbe). The census indicates that his father John Dower was born in January 1876 in Conche. Pierce, his brother Stephen and sister Kathleen appear in the 1935 census as stepchildren of David Griffiths in Argentia. His brother Stephen died of TB but he and his younger sister came to New York after WWII and raised families in Suffolk County, New York on the eastern end of Long Island. Pierce died in 1998 in Brentwood, Suffolk County, NY

If all the pre-20th century Conche Dowers are descendants of James Herbert Dower, your husband has distant cousins here on Long Island.

Sharon

Dower's in St. Louis MO

I am working on a Dower family tree and have hit a stumbling block. My great grandfather was John A Dower. He had a sister and brother (Maurice and Katie) that both died at the age of 30 unmarried. My Aunt Cecilia has asked several times if I have found grandma (Julia Dower)'s cousin Bridget Powers. She also mentioned that one cousin had a name that she remembered being tied to construction. St. Louis has the McCarthy Brothers Construction. There are Dower's connected to them however I cannot tie that branch to mine. It appears that there is a Maurice, John and Patrick all born in Ireland (including a couple of Patrick's kids) between 1833 and 1836. All were in St. Louis by 1860. If you can tie these people together Please contact me. The names Maurice, Morris and John are mixed throughout. I descend from Maurice who married Margaret Finnegan.

Thanks for any and all help!
Julia

I saw your posting on the Dower family tree, and had to reply. We are definitely related, through my mother's side of the family.

My maternal grandmother was Margaret Anne Keller Wilson, although she was known as "Mickie." She was born in 1919 to Margaret Elizabeth Reede and Edward Adam Keller. Margaret Elizabeth Reede's first husband was an Eifert, and her first two children were George Eifert (b. abt. 2/1899) and Julia Eifert (b. abt. 1897). Julia's children are the ones that you had listed in your post: John (my mom always called him Johnny), Clarence, Thomas, Francis, Cecelia, Mary and Theresa. So Julia was my grandmother's half-sister. Julia was quite a bit older than my grandmother -- in fact I believe some Julia's children were close in age to my grandmother.

I would really appreciate hearing from you and helping each other fill in whatever blanks we can! It's always exciting to find new family links out there!

Take care,
Cricket Hackmann
Ashland, MO
hackmann@gte.net
Since the time that I responded to Angelo's message (August 2002), I've heard from Theresa's daugher Julia, and we've been working rather successfully at tracing our common family heritage back several generations. We started with our common great grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Wrede, and have since researched her mother Adeline Deaton's remarriage (after the death of Elizabeth's father, John Wrede) and subsequent move to Douglas County, KS. We've also been able to trace her family, the Deatons, back another 2 generations, to a Briant Deaton, born in North Carolina. That is still somewhat speculative, but we are working on documenting it -- sometimes the information comes quickly, and sometimes it's pretty slow!

If you want to contact me via e-mail and "talk" more, I'd be glad to share with you what we've found.

It's always nice to meet a "new" cousin!

Take care,
Cricket Hackmann
hackmann@gte.net
