Hi Mike,
I am an Australian Dowker and I spent some time in Yorkshire where I had a very brief chance to do some small research, I haven't been able to find the connection to the Yorkshire Dowkers (Salton and Stonegrave) but am certain that is where a connection lies, I did take some pics of the Stonegrave Minster, and a couple of Dowker Headstones, maybe what you are looking for?
I do have some more info on the Salton Dowkers, just need to dig it out.

Kind Regards,

Shayne Dowker

Hi,

There are many variations for Dowker/Docker/Dacre in the Kendal area. I think it would be a good idea to be more specific with dates, christian names, and address from census if you have them.

Regards

I realise that your post is now a few years old and that you may already have more information regarding your family tree. I am currently tracing my wife's tree. She is a descendant of Robert Codrington ( Robert Dowker's father)From my research Robert Dowker married Louisa Kershaw April 5th 1856. They had one child that I know of, Robert William, born 27th November 1856 (although another source states 1857) He died 2nd April 1930 in NSW. Robert Dowker was killed by bandits in NSW 22nd December 1858. He was a trooper for the Gold Police in Bathurst-Sofala.
Robert Dowkers mother was Maria Fleetwood, born 17th March 1810.Her parents were Henry Fleetwood and Dora Carter.

I hope that this info is of some use to you. If you want to communicate, my personal e mail is david.barnes4@virgin.net

Regards

Dave Barnes

England

I have some interesting early history ( before he left NYS ). My name is Albert John Dowker and email is nccyoinc@aol.com.
Vivien

I have come across your message concerning General Sir Howard Codrington Dowker.

A connection may exist between our lines. My GG Grandfather was Robert Dowker Codrington who was born in Madras in 1830 and died in Australia in 1857. Robert's parents were Major General Robert Codrington (1803 -1895) of the Indian Army (serving in Madras) and Maria (nee Fleetwood) born in Dublin.

Given the mother's surname's, the use of the middle names and the connection with Madras it seems that a connection could easily exist.

Has your research progressed to the Fleetwood's?

Bruce Flint
Sydney Australia

Hi Mike,

I am researching my family tree and have traced my ancestor Peter Legat and his wife Sarah back to Laysthrop in 1766 just after they married in Heslington where Peter is described on the marriage certificate as a farmer of Stonegrave, his daughter Jane married John Hunter of Cawton and both are buried in Stonegarve minster grave yard but alas not Peter or Sarah.
I have been unable to find where Peter and his wife lived but from digging around I suspect that they may have lived in what is now Leysthorpe Hall.
I am soory that I am unable to help you with your enquiry but I wondered if in your research you had found any references to my forebears.

Best wishes

Martin
Her name was actually Minnie Barding, not Harding. If you go to www.rootsweb.com and look up : http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

She was my Great Grandmother. The Barding family is still in the Decatur, Illinois area. She was divorced from Caleb Dowker and he remarried and moved to Toledo, Ohio. She stayed in the Johanessburg, Michigan area for several years and my aunts and uncles remember her well. From the stories I've heard she was quite a character.

Please let me know what you discover. I would be interested in finding out more about her.

Thanks!

My ggrandfather was GENERALD SIR HOWARD CODRINGTON DOWKER (1828-1912) British Army Madras (India) Regiment. Son of LIEUTENANT GENERAL HOWARD DOWKER & SARAH FLEETWOOD. He married CECILIA AUGUSTA ONSLOW and had seven children, one being my grandfather LEONARD ONSLOW DOWKER. My question is: does anybody know anything about Sir Howard's siblings? I think he was born in Dublin Ireland. I think these Dowkers were very noble people and had a family crest - which I believe is a crown of five feathers.
Thanking you in advance,
Vivien Hill, Melbourne, Australia

I am not researching this family. I have a copy of an Ostego County Herald and Times (Gaylord, MI. newspaper) dated: March 17, 1911 that I needed for my research into the Newsome family. Don't know if this may help, but it is a nice tid bit to have if searching for places that our ancestors lived.
Caleb Dowker joined the Herald and Times family this week by handing in his subscription, also that of his daughter Mrs. F. W. Clabaugh of Decatur, Illinois.

Toni
