Dowlen/Doolen Family of East TN

I am looking for info on Dowlen/Doolen family from I believe Bledsoe County, TN. I show a Samuel Dowlen marrying Mary Webber. This marriage took place in Knox County, TN in 1840.

IN the 1850 census I found Mary Dowlen age 34 with Amous Dowlen age 75. The household above theirs is Archibald and Malinda Dowlen. I believe this is the same Mary Webber Dowlen from Knox County?

Children of Mary's are also listed--Nancy Elizabeth Dowlen bn 1846 and Mary/ Martha Dowlen bn abt 1844.

By 1860 Mary had remarried to James Hale and was still in Bledsoe County.

Nancy E Dowlen is believed to have married John H(arrison) Hixson and had several children.

Martha/Mary is believed to have married a ?? Alexander.

Lucille E. Dowlen, 90, Clarksville, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Gateway Medical Center.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Neal-Tarpley Chapel with Brother Barclay Riley officiating.

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Springfield. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born March 17, 1917 in Robertson County, daughter of the late Finis Ellis and Addie Farmer Ellis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carmon Dowlen and a brother, James H. Ellis.

Ms. Dowlen was a member of Hilldale Church of Christ and was retired from B.F. Goodrich.

Survivors include sons, Timothy C. Dowlen, Clarksville, and P. Mark Dowlen, Springfield; a brother, William F. Ellis, Franklin; a sister, Eunice Pickney, Mt. Juliet; and a grandson, Joseph M. Dowlen.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hilldale Church of Christ, 501 Highway 76, Clarksville, TN 37043. Arrangements entrusted to Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home, 335 Franklin St., Clarksville, TN 37040, 645-6488.

Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Garden, Cedar Hill.

Parham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

baptised 21st April 1771 at Ashurst
died 29th January 1847 at Guildford, Surrey.

I stumbled on this site and see you have entered my grandfather - Edward H H (although his 3rd name is Norris, so it may be a misprint)
Just thought you would like to know we are in Buckinghamshire, England.
Any other news you have on the family going back further would be great - I am a novice at this sort of thing!

I am a Dowlen that grew up in Chattanooga , TN actually it was in Hixson. All of my family still live there. In fact I know for sure my great grand parents, Harry and Marry Dowlen lived there. That's as far back as I know for sure. I think my great grand father's dad was Harrison Dowlen. Not much help I know, but just thaught I'd let you know.

I am researching my g-g-g-g-grandfather Edward Dowlen and his predecessors.
Edward b 7 May, 1771, Ashurst, Sussex m 26 Feb 1797, Horsham, Sussex, Elizabeth Morley b 13 April 1770, Hurstpierpoint, W Sussex. I think his parents were John Dowlen b ab 1745 Ashurst and Jane ? . They were married ab 1770, Ashust.

I've tracked a Alexander Inglis Black
born about 1826
married in 1852 to Mary Stevens
1871 Census of Kensington, London with wife Mary, daughter Esabella, and sons: Andrew, S____ and Edwin
Died Sept 1896, age 70 in Norwich, Norfolk

However, with that birth info he might not be a brother to Isabella who is born 1816...so we need to compare some more specific notes ASAP please? I'm wondering who their parents were...all I have for Isabella's father was William Black...do you know the parents? I just can't find the connection between the two siblings...help? I've also got another family of BLACKs so it's somewhat confusing...sorry!

If it's of any help, Isabella DOWLEN (1881 census) was the sister of Alexander Inglis BLACK, my husband's 2 x gt-grandfather.

My father was Frank Dowlen from around Chattanooga or Hixon, TN. He was born in the 1880's. I don't know if he was any relationship to Sarah Katherine, but it is thought that he was possibly Cherokee as well.

There are several Dowlens that live in the Hixon & Chattanooga area at this time.

My great great Grandmother was Sarah Katherine Dowlen. dob 3/28/1862, death 9/23/1927.

she married John Buchanon Austin on 9/25/1884

John's dob 11/6/1857 death 12/21/1940.

Sarah is part Indian, we think Cherokee in East TN- possibly Chattanooga area.
