Classification: Query
Surnames: Dowling, Dulin
I am researching a James Dowling that was transported from the Killkenny Jail to America in July, 1740. His charge was grand larcency. I suspect that he arrived in Maryland.
I have a further record of a James Dowling that was a runaway indenture a few years later that was reported in a St. Mary's, Maryland newspaper. I suspect that he may have escaped to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. There are Dowling(s) listed in the 1776 Census of Maryland. There may be a chance that the name was also recorded as Dulin.
I am also interested in knowing the general conditions in Kilkenny, Ireland around 1740.
