There is a Samuel Smoot in my family tree, but not certain if it is your Samuel C Smoot. My Samuel Smoot is the son of Josiah Smoot (bor ?? in VA, died 1856 in MO) and Henrietta Whitaker-Whitacre (also born ?? in VA, died 1881 in MO). If this is your ancestor, I only have information on his ancestors, but nothing on a wife or children.

Let me know if this is yours and we can exchange a little information.
Sandy

Beverly,

Thank you for answering my message. You have given me information about websites that I have not yet heard of or tried. I'm going to look into the town newspapers to see if their online obituaries go back as far as the early 1900's or late 1800's.

Thanks again.

Judy

Hi Judy. I was able to track down the county of origen for some of my Irish ancestors using historic obituaries, church records, and naturalization papers. I found my great grandfather Patrick Downing listed in the 1872 Great Register of California Foreign-Born Voters along with the date and court where he was naturalized; I was able to get a copy of the papers from the National Archives that showed he was a native of County Cork. An obituary in the San Francisco Daily Call newspaper for his wife, Bridget, said she was from Waterford (not sure if the city or just the county). My other Irish great grandmother, Margaret Mahoney Hall, was widowed and then remarried a French widower. I found their marriage record (fortunately it had survived the 1906 earthquake)in the San Francisco Archdiocese Archives, which said she was from "Kok", which I'm guessing is what you get when a French-speaking priest tries to write Cork in Latin :-) As a bonus, it also gave her parents' names.

You might check to see if there are similiar records for Stamford, CT.

Once you have a county of origen, The Irish Family History Foundation has a website http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com where you can look up baptismal, marriage and other information by county that will provide you with town or parish names. Not all counties or all areas within a given county have on-line records yet, so I haven't scored any hits thus far.

Good luck!
Beverley Downing Penzien

I just recently joined this site. I have received some information from Downing relatives about family members, but not about where they came from in Ireland. My Downing relatives settled in Stamford, Connecticut, my gggrandparents, Maurice/Morris & Ellen Hayes Downing came over from Ireland. What I would like to know is how can I find out what town and county they came from. If there is anyone that knows, please let me know.

Thanks,

Judy

I found your post today...I do not know about the person you are inquiring, but, I think Louise Downing (parents GW & Janie) married my Uncle Albert Branch. I was trying to find out all the names of (Albert & Louise's) children. The last time I saw them I was VERY young, Preston, Jack and I think a little girl named Mary Jane was born.
I just started doing Genealogy in August...so I am very new... Sorry that I could not help you.

Looking for Samuel Downing

I am looking for a Samuel Downing who married Priscilla Moore 12-21-1815 in Kentucky. They had two sons - William N. b. 1820 in Kentucky & Thomas S. (my great-grandfather, b. 3-7-1821 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. The family moved back to Mercer County, KY in 1829 from Indiana and then moved back to to Indiana in 1838. Moved to Marion, Iowa in 1840, but I believe that Samuel was deceased by then. Priscilla then married Thomas Gray. They had a son named Henry Harrison Gray b. 11-22-1842. Priscilla died 8-24-1852 in Marion, IA.

I would appreciate any help anyone might have.
Christian Co. KY - DeWitt and Macon Co.s IL, Linn Co., KS, Saline Co., MO - Family of Josiah/Joseph, William, Job Downing/Downen

I am trying to track down the Downing families that I believe to be descended from Josiah/Joseph Downing who I think is the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson. Is anyone out there connected to this branch of the family?
Here is what I think I have pieced together so far...

I found a listing of the possible children of Josiah/Joseph Downing here -
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/D/DownenJosiahJoseph-Rebecca...

I believe I am related to this family through Elizabeth J. Downen who married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt County, IL in 1846. (I would like to verify that Elizabeth J. is actually the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca!)

The website above mentions that the wife of Josiah Downing might have been Rebecca Jane Troxel. But that the marriage record says Rebecca Mann. Anyone know any more about this possible Troxel connection?

It seems that Job Downen (the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson) along with his brother Josiah and father William moved to DeWitt County, Ill.

Job Downen married Alabama Williams in 1835 in Macon County, IL. He died in 1841 and Alabama later married Frederick Troxel (the father of William Ford Troxel).
Now I believe that William Downen also moved to IL and remarried to Ludica (Spencer)French. He was living in DeWitt County, IL in 1850.

Josiah Downing (48) was living in DeWitt county in 1850 with his family.
wife Rebecca, 45
Josiah 16
Margaret 14
Alfred C. 11
Job 8
Henry C. 6
Josephine 3
All of the children born in IL.

Mary Ann (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married Joseph Spencer in 1849 in DeWitt county, IL. This Joseph Spencer is also related to the Troxel family. Although I am not sure how he and Ludica are related.

As I mentioned earlier, Elizabeth Downen (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt county in 1846.

There is a marriage record for Mariah Downing (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) in Macon Co., IL in 1877 to Cyrus Hollinger. Could this have been her second marriage?

The family of Josiah/Joseph Downing then moved to Linn county Kansas, Mound city Twp. where they were in 1860.
Josid Downing, 58
Rebecca, 54
Alfred, 22
Job, 20
Josephine, 12
also living next door
J. Downing Jr. 25
Phebe, 26 - b. NY
Martha, 1 - b. Kansas

I have not been able to locate any of these family members in 1870 census.

In 1880 census, some are living in Saline County, Miami Twp., Missouri.
Job Downing, 38
wife Amanda, 31
Loretta, 12
Frank, 9
George, 7
Stella, 5
Nora, 11/12,
all the children born born in MO
living next door is Alfred Downing, 41

Also living in Saline County, Miami Twp. MO
Josiah Downing, 44,
wife Phebe, 43
Henry, 19
Annie, 14
John, 12
Mary, 10
Josiah, 7
all the children born in IL.

I have not been able to track these families any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated on trying to figure out this Downen / Downing puzzle. I would like to verify the children of Josiah and Rebecca and try to figure out where they ended up. Also if anyone has information on the family of William and Margaret Robinson, that might be helpful too. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

I would love to find more information and renew connections to descendants of Harry L. Downing. Harry #1 had a son Harry b. 1872 in Brooklyn NY. Harry #2 married Ann Winan Cue, and they had a passel of kids, though they had little imagination in naming them: Harry #3, Harriet, Charles, Gladys, Pearl, Walter, Robert, Arthur and Warren. At one point Harry #2, Harry #3, Harriet and mother-in-law Harriet were all living in the same household in Queens NY! Harriet Downing b.1897 in NYC is my grandmother - she married Allen L. Griffin Sr. Do you have any info on these Downings?

George Edgar Downing (1869 Missouri - 1947 Los Angeles CA)

The California Death Index lists a George Edgar Downing, born 9 Mar 1869 in Missouri, died 27 Oct 1947 in Los Angeles.

Can anyone tell me whether this is the same person as the son of John P. Downing and wife Eliza (maiden name unknown), listed as George age 1 in 1870 and as Eddie age 11 in 1880?

1870 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 1 July, lists on p. 55 as family #353/360:
Downing, John P., 43, b. Ky; Elisa, 25, b. Illinois; Thomas, 11, b. Ky; Jesse M., 8, b. Indiana; Harris, John, 10, b. Missouri; James, 7, b. Missouri; Downing, George, 1, b. Missouri.

1880 census of Johnson Co., Missouri, Hazle Hill township, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 10 as family #77:
Downing, John, 52, farmer, b. Ky Ky Ky; Eliza, 38, wife, b. Ill Tenn Alabama; Jessie M., 18, son, b. Ind Ky Ky; Eddie, son, 11; Elba P., son, 9; Gertie L, dau, 6; Emmet E., son, 4; Anna, dau, 2; Harris, James P., 18, stepson. Eddie through James all listed as born Mo Ky Ill.

Judging by the step-children, Eliza/Elisa was apparently previously married to a Harris, but I do not know her maiden name. John P. Downing was previously married to Nancy Nickell in Morgan Co., Ky, they moved to Shelby Co., Ky, around 1854, then to Indiana around 1861, then to Missouri around 1865.

My connection is that John P. Downing was my GGG Uncle. I am trying to trace descendants of his parents, Dennis Downing and Mary McCormick. I'm hoping that someone from this branch can tell me what Eliza's maiden name was, and when and where she and John died.

Your Dennis Downing who married Margaret Church was a brother of my 4 ggrandmother, Sally Downing. She married John Patterson and had several children in Clinton County Ohio and then they moved to Michigan. As Lorrie Davis has said,I too have been unable to find the names of Dennis Downing Sr's parents or his siblings. If there is anything I can help you with let me know. Do you have all of Dennis Jr's siblings?

Re: Rufus Downing

I have a Rufus Downing born 1792, grandson of Stephen Downing Sr who was a private on the CT line during the Revolutionary War. The Downings were early residents of Monroe, MI. Rufus opened a trading post in St. Joseph, MI. His wife was Lola Weston. They had 10 children.

I learned much of this from the book "Michigan Military Records" published by the DAR in 1920, p. 108-109.

I would very much appreciate further information on this family. I am tracing an Adams line that married into this family. You can see my Ancestry page for Rufus here http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=5570884&pid.... The Adams connection is via Amanda Adams, who married Miner Downing, another son of Stephen Downing, Sr.

My page includes an image of the pages from the DAR book.

According to the DAR book, in 1920, a Mrs. Celia Howe, great granddaughter of Stephen Downing, Sr., was in possession of the family bible. Hopefully someone will come across this bible!

Re: Geoffrey Downing

Hello, as you will see on the list of messages earlier today I answered re the line of Downings mentioned in your message below so I will try not double up on those, and as your message was sent in June 2001 I expect you now have the correct information but I will give a few dates for those new to these Downings and reading the message board.

To date there is no proof that Geoffrey and Elizabeth [nee Wingfield] Downing had a son named George, but that doesn't mean they didn't.

There was a Mary Browne daughter of John[d.1591] and Silvester[d.1593] Browne of Spexhall, Co. Suffolk[brass St. Peter's Church] who married William Downing of Spexhall. Mary possibly died as the result of child birth, a dau. was buried 31st Dec. 1601 and Mary 2nd Jan. 1601.[Extracts from Spexhall Parish Reg. beginning 1537] Of course there could have been more than one Mary nee Browne who married a Downing.

The extracts from the Spexhall Parish Register state that a
'George Downing son of Wm Downinge born 03 Mar baptised 15 Mar 1598,'

'George born in 1552' I'm not sure if there is a proved date for his birth. The name of his wife is not known, even on the St. Lawrence Church buriel register her name has been left out.

Emanuel Downing the son of George Downing the headmaster of the school in Ipswich did not die in Salem MA in 1658, but he was buried in St Martins in the Fields in 1660. He was buried on 14 Dec. 1660[ref. City of Westmimster Archives Centre] but he had died much earlier as his body was bought down from Edinburgh to London, I have seen the date given as 26 July 1660!

Emanuel's first wife was Anne Ware, they were not married in Norwich MA in 1660, Anne Ware was buried in St. Werburgh's Church, Dublin in October 1621. She died on either the 16th or 17th. Lucy Winthrop was Emanuel's 2nd wife.
---------------------

From other messages in the same section not already dealt with in the 2 messages today.
Message dated Monday April 15, 2002. Author cakelly44
No, Geoffrey and George are not the same person. Geoffrey's name was also be spelt with a J spelt as Jeffrey, as in the original Norfolk Visitations of 1589 but it has not appeared as George.

Message dated Thursday, Jan 9th 2003. Author Jess311.
Emanuel Downing did not live in Sherrington - Shenington, Gloucester. This was the home of Calybute[v. sp] Downing will Oct. 31st 1644 Probate Dec. 15th 1644.[National Archives Wills Ref. PROB 11/192].
The George Downing who married Cicely was the George Downing of Beccles who had the son George the headmaster in Ipswich, Co. Suffolk.

Message dated Thursday, Jan 9 2003 Author. Jess311.
Geoffrey Downing married Elizabeth Wingfield but he did not marry Cicely. Anne nee Ware was dead by Oct. 1621 leaving Emanuel a widower.

I noticed at least two of the subject headings in this section gave Geoffrey Downing the title of 'Sir' if someone knows of a primary source which shows he was Sir Geoffrey Downing please could they send it to me, thank you. I hope some of the above helps. Jill.

Hello, it has been nine years since your post and you may have found the information you have been looking for, but just incase you haven't I hope the following helps.

From the original Norfolk Visitations 1589. Jeffrey Downing of Poles Belcham, Essex married to Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Wingfield of Downham Magna [Norfolk] had one son named Arthur Downing of Lexham, Co. Norfolk. As yet there is no proof that they had a son named George. I have no birth date for Arthur but he was married in Clare, Co. Suffolk 22nd Nov. 1570 to Susan daughter and heir of John Calybutt of Castle Acre, Norfolk [marriage ref-Clare Parish Reg. FL.501/4/1]

Here I have used the spellings used in the different documents seen - There was a George Downing who married a Dorcas Bloyce at St Nicholas Church, Ipswich, Suffolk.[ref.Parish transcript Page7+Fiche 1 of 38]. She was baptised at St Nicholas's [two dates] 2nd/3rd Sept. 1592 the daughter of William Bloyse/Bloise. The family lived in Ipswich before they moved about 4 miles to the village of Grundisburgh. George Downing was buried up by the altar of St.Peter's Church Spexhall, Suffolk the date on his stone is 1655, Dorcus is named on his stone as his his father-in-law. Dorcus is buried in St Georges Church, St Cross, South Elmham, Co. Suffolk the date Sept. 3rd 1638. [ref burial record - Ipswich Record Office].

The George Downing linked to ? Bellamy is possible the headmaster of a school in Ipswich, Suffolk [now known as Ipswich School], but there is no proof of her names. From the burial record of St. Lawrence Church, Ipswich, Suffolk the wording is -
'..... Downynge wyff of George Buried the 21 of December.'
then under are the words.- 'George Downing was Buried the'
[no date was given] This George Downing the headmaster, [will - 16th Jan. 1611. Proved 3rd Oct. 1611 - 'Suffolk Manorial Families...' Muskett Vol.1] was the son of George Downing of Beccles, Suffolk [will - 20th Dec. 1561. Probate 26th June 1564. Muskett Vol.1] and he was the father of Emanuel Downing who 1st married Anne Ware and 2nd Lucy Winthrop.

In the 1611 will of the Ipswich headmaster George Downing he named one of his 3 daughters as Abigale. She was also named in the will of her brother Nathaniel Downing dated 1616. Probate 14th May 1616 [Muskett Vol.1] and by then she was married to John Goade a skinner with a son also named John. Jill.

Hello, did the vicar give a date for the John or Thomas de Downinge named in the parish registers of St. Disen's Church?
In the Woodbridge Library, Woodbridge, Suffolk, England in the Seckford Collection are 3 books published in the early 1900's by George Booth, Church Street, Woodbridge. The titles are-

"Suffolk in 1327 being a Subsidy Return" No. IX Vol. II
"Suffolk in 1524 " " " " granted in 1523" No. X
"Suffolk in 1568 Subsidy Return" by Lord Hervey. No. XII
All three books have a map of the Suffolk Hundreds.

In Suffolk in the year 1327 there was no one by the name of Downing or Downinge, but there was the name Donnyg.
In 1524 the names Downing and Downyng were is use plus Donnyng and Donyng.
And in 1568 Downing, Downyng, Downinge, Douninge, Dunynge.
With the map the names could be tracked around the Hundreds in the different years and the same would work for all the names in the books.
Hope you can help with the date. Thank you, Jill.

Sarah & Joseph Downing - Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

I have recently updated the section on Sarah (sister to my great-grandfather Thomas Hoyles Sharman) and Joseph Downing in my Sharman Family History as follows:

Sarah Elizabeth Sharman was born on 7th October 1869 and baptised at Swinstead on 31st October 1869. The 1881 census shows her living at Sharmans Lodge with her older brother and sister, Thomas and Jane, and a couple of servants. In 1891 she was living at Swinstead with her brother William and their widowed mother Jane. The 1901 census shows Sarah living at Castle Bytham with her mother, who died the following year. Sarah married Joseph Downing at Castle Bytham on her 32nd birthday - 7th October 1901.
Joseph Downing was a widower from Sheffield, who was about fifteen years older than Sarah. He was born in the summer of 1854 at Boughton near Ollerton in Nottinghamshire. He had married Dronfield-born Martha Bower in the spring of 1876, and they had four sons and three daughters born between 1877 and 1894. They had originally lived in Quoit Green, Dronfield; but they moved to Sheffield in about 1884. The 1891 census listed Joseph as a steel-warehouseman, and showed the family living at 57 Ashley Road in Sheffield. Martha died early in 1897 aged 42 years. We do not know how Joseph Downing came to meet Sarah Sharman, and strangely we cannot yet find him in the 1901 census.
After their marriage Sarah went back to Sheffield to live with Joseph and his younger children. In the next ten years she had at least four children of her own - Grace Jane (born in 1902), Samuel (1905), Jessie (1910), and Nellie (1911). The gap between Samuel and Jessie indicates that there may have been others, which did not survive. In 1911 Joseph, Sarah and eight children (including five of Martha's) were living at 165 Olive Grove Road in Sheffield, and 56 years old Joseph was still working as a steel-warehouseman. We have discovered no more about Sarah and her family, but it seems likely that Joseph died in the spring of 1919 at the age of 64.

Can anyone add any more - particularly regarding Sarah and Joseph's descendants - please?

For more extracts from my work see http://homepages.tesco.net/~jksharman/sharmanfamhist1.htm .
I show Aaron Feagin Downing born 1834 in Conecuh County, AL, but I show he married a woman named Rhoda.
It's been a while since I looked at this but I saw a record that said he was last seen in a CSA hospital in Atlanta in 1864. Supposedly he did not survive the war.

I show Feagin and Rhoda had three children, Nancy S. Downing b. 1856; Elizabeth "Lizzie" Downing, my ggm b. 1859 and Bryant Elisha Downing b. 1862.

Rhoda, or Rodie was shown on CSA pension records in the Escambia County Courthouse , as the widow of Feagin Downing, as late as May 1899.

My ggm Lizzie, was divorced from her husband James Colvin (he later married Catherine Stanley in 1912) and interesting there is a Bryant Downing, age 56 shown in the 1920 census of Escambia county, as head of household with daughter Laura and sister Lizzie, age 59.

I have also seen the info on Feagin marrying a Katherine "Katie" Smith and residing in Castleberry, I just assumed that to be an error. However, we could be talking about different people.
Jordan, did you ever get the needed birth record? I am a grandchild of Anson's father James Madison Downing. Do you know Leighton or Vaughn? I have the family history of the line you are looking for. Diane

Bryant's father was Feagin Downing (not sure about the Aaron). Feagin was born in Conecuh county in 1834 and was married to Katherine Smith and they bore Bryant Elisha. I have Bryant's wife as Kathryn Stewart but my records may be wrong. Email me if you have/want more info.

abrad3 @ hotmail . com

Hm? Interesting mess. So I've found an Aaron Feagin and an Feagin Downing, both from Wiley C. and Sara Mason born in the same year. But with two different wives and different children. There's a 1850 census from Conecuh Co. that lists Feagin (no Aaron in the name) being 16 years of age. After that my Feagin (married to Catherine Smith) kinda drops off the face of the earth.

So, I'm thoroughly confused. I don't know if it's the same person and somehow really bad information has just been passed down or two different people that somehow got crossed as being the same. Bummer. Looks like I'm back a square one trying to figure out who's who. If anyone has (sourced) info they can share I'm all ears!

aka Synthia Davis Chinn in some records. I have lots of information on that name from my father's paternal grandparents background. Would like to know if you need any information and if we can share what we have. You do have more on her possible marriage dates than I do, but I also have more information on the Chinn line back further than Charles Downman Chinn. Would you like to share this information?

Re: Surname origination

There is not birth/baptism date given for John Downynge, the first documented of this line. However, the register states that Thomas Downynge "son of John", was baptized at the church on 23 Aug 1560. If one assumes that the father was perhaps 30 years old at the time of the baptism of his son, Thomas, that would put his birth year around 1530. Probably plus or minus 10 yeas.

Suffolk is nearly 300 miles from Bradninch, Devon, England. I would seriously doubt that there is any connection between the Suffolk Downings and the Devon Downings.
