Sorry for not responding to your post sooner, I haven’t been online. I’m pretty sure I have some family records of the young family Zina’s first wife and mother of my ancestor Duncan. We also have the Downs Family history going all the way back to our first American ancestors who settled in the New Haven Colony in the 1650s. Here is my email as well, ddowns001@centurytel.net

Please let me know what information I have that may be helpful.

David S.
Would be very interested in exchanging info. My e-mail is cat10ant@yahoo.com.

I have found other information that indicates Zina Downs was married to Abigail Youngs before he was married to Eliza Jane Crawford. Abigail is buried in Beachvile cemetery.

I am a direct descendant from his son's Duncan's line. Duncan had a son Zina who was my great grandfather, both immigrated to Northern Wisconsin in the mid 1880s. We have some limited information on Zina and Eliza Jane in the form of a few Newspaper articles in our family research. If you think that will help, I send you a PDF Copy of the info.
I am looking for information on the family of Timothy and Mary DOWNS. They appear in the 1860 through 1920 census records living in Delavan in Walworth County, WI. Per the census records, their children included: John P., Margaret, James H., Joanna, Timothy, Mathew E. Francis "Frank" J., William, and Thomas C.

Per the 1900 census, Timothy was born May 1833 in Ireland and Mary was born March 1834 in Ireland. They were both still living as of January 1920 when the census was taken.

I would be interested in comparing information with other researchers of this same family. Thank you.
Joseph Jay Downs

b abt 1875, buried Dixie, OK cemetery 1937; m. Bashaba Gaddis about 1900 possibly in Wood Co., TX. Father Alfred D. Downs, 50th TN Infantry Civil War; Mother unknown; sister Amie Elizabeth Downs Heath d 1931; Amie Elizabeth married Alfred Boyd Heath September 1893 in Stewart County TN. Amie's/Alfred's grandson remembers that Alfred Heath quoted Amie "there was a brother Joe, but he disappeared and never came back". Joseph Jay was half brother to Oliver F. Downs, d 1972 Montgomery Co. TN (father Alfred D., mother Anne Barrow, per newspaper obit quoted by Melissas Barker on this site) If I didn't have pictures of J. J. and family stories from my mother Josie Downs Hawkins and uncle Oris Herman Downs I would wonder if he existed! Some family stories re slightly "unsavory" activities by Joseph Jay may account for absent documentation. More likely, Debra Hawkins Gallagher's inexperience at searching accounts for absent documentation. Glad to share whatever I have on these various connections. Would love to have birth place/year information for J.J., or pointers to any subsequent documentation. Feel free to respond to debra.gallagher@sympatico.ca and/or through this board. Thanks in advance!

The census will help you. The spelling of the surname in all of the entries I saw was "Downes." You can see your mother in the Wilkinson household in Seekonk MA in 1930. In the 1920 census in Pawtucket you can see on one page your grandparents, the Spooners, and your grandfather's brother Jeremiah. In the 1900 census in Cumberland RI you can see the family of your great-grandparents, Thomas Downes and wife Mary. Consistently, the place of birth for your great-grandfather is given as England.

Hi Elizabeth! Bonnie Hugh Sr. is my Great Grandfather's brother. Robert Lee Downs is my Great Grandfather, and his son, William Francis Downs is my Grandfather. That makes us cousins! I have been trying to dig up information on the Downs family for a while and have been having a little trouble too...I just recently found the death certificate to William Downs, Bonnie and Roberts father, and it says on it that his fathers name is William Downs, born in TX and his mother is Doretta Vulgosh, born in Germany. I have both the birth and death certificate for Robert Lee Downs, and it has the names of his parents on them. His father was William Downs, and his mother was Savannah Hibbard. I don't know any dates or anything else about them. I can't seem to find anything about them anywhere. Have you found any information on them in your research? Anything helps!

Does anyone have any information on my Great Great Great Grandfather, William A. Downs, who was born in Georgia on Sep 13, 1819 and died on Dec 26, 1904? I am having a lot of trouble finding out much of anything on him or his family. I know his father is from Ireland, but I don't know who he is or anything about him. William A. Downs' son, and my GG-Grandfather is William J. Downs, born Aug 1862 in TX, and I can't seem to find anything on him either. If i'm not mistaken, he has a twin named Sarah Downs, and again, I can't seem to find anything on her. I would really appreciate in help. If you have any pictures, stories or information, please send it my way!
Thanks,
Willie Downs

Looking for Downs family who I believe immigrated to USA from Ireland. They immigrated to Ct, USA. My grandfather is George W. Downs and died in 1928 at quite a young age; I belive around the age of 42+/-. My mother was about 9 at the time. He married Angeline Spooner from Pawtaucket, RI. His only child that is still alive is named after him. But, being at such a young age when his father died, he does'nt remember. My mother's name was Barbara and he had two other daughters, Alice & Elizabeth. They all had children but no on has any info. Perhaps it's because he passed away so young and my grandmother re-married. Please, anything?

Rev. Nathan Halsey Downs in Groton, Caledonia County, VT

I used to have most of the history of Nathan's Family but it was on a website called "Heart of the Children". That website no longer exists. If anyone has info on him that would be great. I know his first wife died and then he moved to Illinois and had a second family that I don't know anything about. Here is an article about his son Nathan Hanson Downs, who is my gggg-grandfather. I live in Madison, SD on the Family homestead. I have looked through all of the strings about the Downs family and only found one that would come close to my line. I believe

Husband: Nathan Halsey DOWNS # 18
Wife: Louisa Marice paine # 17
SOURCES: Most of the information on Nathan Halsey DOWNS was gathered from family members, especially Wedworth Wyman "Jerry" Downs and numerous family letters in possession of Kim Day.
Other sources are:
Newspaper article circa 1910 that details an interview with Nathan Halsey DOWNS after he removed to San Diego County. I do not now which newspaper this article was published in but it must have either been a San Diego or Chula Vista paper.
Newspaper article from Madison, SD detailing the Golden Wedding Anniversary of the Judge and Mrs. N.H. Downs. This article was published in 1890.
Biographical sketch written about James Edmond Downs (son of Nathan Halsey) written by Fred C. Downs (mo date)
Article about William Mason Downs on his 91st Birthday printed in the Madison, South Dakota paper Nov 1934.
Nathan Hanson Downs was born 9 March 1819 in Groton, Caledonia County, VT and spent his early boyhood there. When he was 13 he left home and walked 24 miles over the Vermont Green Mountains to Craftsbury, VT were he worked for his board and attended the academy (this would be a school offering more school time than Groton's 3 mo summer/ 3 mo winter schedule). He worked during the haying season to help balance his account.
His father was a Baptist minister and wanted his son to be either a minister or a doctor. In the newspaper interview he states that "I told him I was not fit to be the first and wouldn't be the other, so he told me that I would have to row my own boat".
In 1834 he went to St. Albans, VT wher he learned to typeset for a newspaper. This trade came in handy over the years. A letter he wrote 1 May 1862 in Pocahantas, Arkansas (while serving in the Civil war) tells "I went into an old deserted recruiting office and printed a few little circulars which I will enclose so you can tell them they must not think hard of so short a letter for it was printed in the land of cotton." The "circular" printed on a small, stiff green card says: Pocahantas, Arkansas May 1, 1862 Friends at home;--here I am in the land of Cotton, in an old dilapidated printing office, amusing myself, and perhaps you; this is merely as a curiosity, for you to look at to remind you where I am on this 1st of May 1862. We are still making our way south; the general health of the 11th Reg. is good; and the boys all seem to enjoy themselves first rate; you Will please excuse this short epistle from Yours truly, N. Downs 2nd Lieut. Co G. 11th Wis Vol.
But to go back to 1834, he secured a job in St. Albans working on the Franklin Journal which was an anti Masonic newspaper. The anti Masonic movement was ignited in 1826 by the disappearance of a bricklayer in western NY who supposedly had broken his vow of Freemason secrecy by preparing a book revealing the organization's secrets. Rumours of his murder at the hands of the Masons swept through NY into New England. It seemed incumbent on politicians to speak out against this group as they sought votes. Anti Masonic newspapers flourished and in Sept 1831, the Anti Masonic party held a national convention in Baltimore. They nominated William Wirt for president. Wirt won the state of VT in the 1832 presedential election (the only state he one) and the party went into decline afterwards.
He stayed in St Albans for three years, and at age 21 returned to his native Groton where he became associated with his fater Nathan Hanson Downs in the making and marketing of "Downs Elixir" a remedy for throat and bronchial disorders.
About 1840 he traveled by Erie Canal and lake steamer to Janesville, WI where he met is brother Edmund Morse Downs, a doctor. He bought land there which he apparently quickly sold for a profit of "$150 on the whole tract". If this is before or after he married Louisa Marice Paine of Broofield, VT I do not know. Their first child, Harriet was born in Groton in September 1841. He spent a few years in Iowa County, WI in the lead mines. William was born in Iowa County, WI in November 1843.
1845 found him back in Edens, VT where Clara was born. By 1847 he had removed to Boston. Arline was born there in November of 1847. He went to work at atype setter (compositor) at the Boston Daily Whig newspaper earning 16 cents per 1000 letters. His pay for the first week was $4. He was soon promoted to reporter. The Daily Whig was a free soil paper whose editor was Charles Francis Adams. The Free Soil political party was organized in 1848 on a platform opposing the extension of slavery. The growing conflict between pro slavery and anti slavery forces in the US was intensified by the acquisition of new territories from Mexico (following the Mexican War). The major groups involved in the organization of the Free Soil party were the abolitionist Liberty party, the antislavery Whigs and a radical faction of the NY Democrats called the Barnburners. The Free Soil convention nominated Martin Van Buren and Charles Francis Adams as candidated for president and vice president. They adopted a platform apposed to the extension of slavery, calling for a homestead law and a tariff for revenue only. They polled over 290,000 votes in the 1848 presidential election, taking no states but playing a decisive role in the election of Zachary Taylor a Whig. They elected 2 Senetors from the party and 14 to Congress. In 1852 they polled fewer votes but increased their representation in congress. In 1854 the party lines broke resulting in the formation of the Republican Party into which the Free Soil party was absorbed.
The newspaper interview with Downs details some of the excitement he felt as the offices of the Daily Whig became the Free Soil party headquarters during the elections. After Charles Francis Adams retired as editor of the paper he was succeeded by Henry Wilson who afterwards was elected Vice president on the Republican ticket with U.S. Grant. Nathan Downs stated a letter which Mr Wilson wrote (dated 23 April 1850) to him regarding his faithful employment at the Daily Whig was one of his most prized possessions.
This letter must signal his removal back to Wisconsin where he took up land in Dover, Dane County, Dover was about 1 1/2 miles from Mazomanie. It was the principle town in the area until the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad passed it by, instead building a stop in Mazomanie. There is apparently nothing left of Dover and it is no longer shown on maps of the area. Mary (called May) was born there in July 1850. He apparently also purchased a store (or was partners in a store) in Dover. He was also the postmaster there, appointed 2 July 1853.
Nathan Wyaman was born in October, 1853 in Mazomanie. Edmund and Fred were born in 1854 and 1857, both in Dover. Sometime during his Dover years he worked with a neighbor named Appleby on the patent for a self binder (wheat combine). This was apparently a poor investment and he lost a significant amount of money.
He enlisted in the 11th Wisconsin Volunteers in 1861. He obtained the rank of 1st Lietenant before his discharge in January of 1863. He re enlisted in December of that same year as part of the 40th regiment. He was discharged from the 40th 22 Sept 1864. His letters home to his family in Mazomanie chronicle his experiences.
Seemingly always on the move, he moved to Iowa for a short while where he got up a regiment of eigth companies and received a commission as Colonel. The war came to end soon after and he was not able to take his regiment to the front.
At an unknown date he moved agin, this time to Lake County, Dakota Territory. His son William Mason moved there from Wisconsin in 1879, perhaps they moved together. He was probate judge there and while occupying that position he took the examination for admission to the bar. At age 70 he was granted the necessary credentials to practice law. I have seen references that he graduated from Harvard Law School. I do not see how this is possible unless harvard had some versionof 'distance learning" or a mail order course at the time. In any event his eye was on becoming County Judge which required a law degree. In 1889 he was elected to the postion of County Judge. In his newspaper interview he claims to have been Mayor of the city of Madison, SD, judge of the probate court and president of the School Board at the same time. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Normal School (school to train teachers) in Madison.
In 1892 he moved for the final time, away from the cold winter to join his son Nathan Wyman Downs in Chula Vista, CA. He joined Nathan Wyman in the lemon orchard business there. His wife Louisa Paine Downs died soon after their arrival in Chula Vista. Nathan Halsey Downs remarried soon after to Jenny Ross a woman 28 years his junior. Jenny died in 1912 and Nathan Halsey Downs died in 1913 at the age of 94.

Downs DNA

Hello,

By way of introduction my name is Damian Stewart Downie and I am part of the family tree at http://members.freezone.co.uk/dunoon/ , living in Melbourne Australia. I am seeking to encourage members of the various Dooney, Down, Downer, Downes, Downey, Downs, Downy, Downie/Macildownie/M’ildownie/MacGildownie/MacKildownie/MacEldownie, Downey/Macildowney/M’ildowney/MacGildowney/MacKildowney/MacEldowney and Mac Gillie Domhnaich/Mac Giolla Domhnaigh families to get their DNA profiles completed (in particular the male YDNA markers and haplogroup). I have to say upfront that I do not support, receive commissions or suggest any one DNA supplier. My reasoning behind the request is that there appears to be a number of different Downie (and all name variations) family trees that do not appear to intersect as far as the records go back and I firmly believe that DNA may be able to assist.

I recently had my DNA done with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) https://www.familytreedna.com/ and am happy with their services (again please shop around and find the best deal for you).

There currently exists a Downey FTDNA project which includes the following names: Dooney, Down, Downer, Downes, Downey, Downie, Downs, Downy, Maceldowney, Macildowney, Macildownie at: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Downey

However you get your DNA analyzed, what is important is that regardless of which DNA Company you choose, that this information is uploaded to a public site such as YSEARCH http://www.ysearch.org (a free public service).

While this path of investigation will never replace a good document trail, I believe that it does provide some avenues of perhaps grouping some of the Downie (and all name variations) families together that may assist in the genealogical process. What I can say is that the test has revealed some very interesting information regarding my genetic background.

Best Regards,

Damian Stewart Downie
