Amos Dowrick

Hi, I've been searching my grx4 grandfather Amos Dowrick, a miller in Cornelly, Veryan, Cornwall. The LDS suggests that Thomas Dowrick who married Ann Lug in 1787 Falmouth are his parents. I've looked around and have found a family scenario for Thomas and Ann of Falmouth of at least 2 sons, a grandson, even a burial of an Ann Dowrick in 1833 all taking place in Falmouth. It seems odd that this family would be having a child in Veryan in the middle of their family being born in Falmouth. The death dates for both Thomas and Ann Lugg are the same as the death dates for Thomas and Ann Collett of Veryan in some sites. When I looked for the given name Amos, I found that Ann Collett has a brother Amos (Collett), an uncle Amos (Jennings) and a grandfather Amos (Jennings). As far as I could see there had never been an Amos Dowrick before the marriage of Ann Collett to Thomas Dowrick of Veryan. It seems very likely that he is son to Ann Collett, not to mention his sister's name is Biddy (nickname for Bridget) which is Ann Collett's mother's name. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of either of these families. Thanks, Lari

Dowricks from Veryan

Hi I'm looking for Anne Dowrick's parents. She was born in Veryan about 1824 and married Joseph May 1846 in Tregoney. I know her father was William Dowrick and that's it. Does anyone know anything? I guess it is quite an unusual surname.

Hello Mr. Dowrick, I have been researching my family tree. My name is Sharon Anne Trounce b. July 2 1957. My father was Edgar Norman Trounce b. Feb. 2 1922. The tree says 1923, but i have his original birth cert. It is 1922. I am facinated with what I have found. Your family name came up in the tree, John Trounce married a Rachel Dowrick Sept. 29th 1811 in Veryan, Cornwall, England, and oh my, 11 children! Would really like to hear from you, I live in British Columbia, Canada. Osoyoos is the name of our small town. It is in the Okanagan Valley. Happy New Year....Sharon

Yes, I'm still here. I have these children for Francis/Sarah(Dowrick) Uren/Youren: Mary, Johanna, Edward, Jane, Harriet Richard, Francis, Christian, and William. Richard and Francis went to Australia. But I know nothing about them. For William Dowrick and Joanna Martin married Nov 3, 1794 I have these children: Sarah, Susanna, Harriet, and Ann, and Jennifer. Ann married Frank Trebilcock and is my ancestor. Does this correspond with your info? Evelyn (evelynhb@cox.net)

Re: Mary DOWRICK m. William SYMONS Veryan

Hi Sharon, I notice that I don't seem to have answered this message that you sent to me. My apologies.
My records don't show a direct connection to the MAry Dowrick you say married William Symons in 1809. However I do have a MAry (1790-1834) supposedly married to John Jenkin (1770s-1859). This information was taken from David Trounce's reconstruction of the Veryan families. However David's work is not entirely reliable and I've found him unwilling to respond to corrections. For example, my Veryan ancestors are James Dowrick and MAry Ann MORSE. James died in Veryan(1842) and Mary Ann emigrated to Australia in 1856 and she died here in 1881, whereas David shows her dieing in Veryan. I think that at least for the Dowrick family the whole reconstruction has to be revised. In particular the Dowricks in the all the villages surrounding Verayn need to be considered, for example my James comes from Ruan Lanihorne, not Veryan.
Further to that point I've done a passing review of all the DOWRICKs in villages near to Verayn and there is a surprsing paucity. This has lead me to propose that ALL Dowricks orginally come from Veryan. It will be interesting to see how that shapes out in time.
cheers
jon

DOWRICK - CULLEN - San Francisco

I am trying to trace Dowricks in the San Francisco area.

My great aunt (my grandfathers sister) Elizabeth Ann Cullen, born 14.2.1881, in County Durham England, emigrated to USA circa 1906 and married Thomas Dowrick born 9.1.1883, Cleator Moor, Cumberland, England. The marriage was probably in Arizona.
By 1919 they had moved to San Francisco where their last child, Thomas W. Dowrick was born on 20.9.1919.

The last known contact with my family here in the UK, was about 1957, when Richard Dowrick (their third child born circa 1912) visited. At that time he lived in San Francisco.

I have no known (current) address for any of the family and would like to make contact (purely for research peurposes).

If anyone has any links to any of this family I would be obliged for any information.

Regards,

Gerry

Mary Ann with her 3 daughters Mary Jane, Emma Louisa (my ggmother) and Elizabeth Jane migrated to Australia in 1855. We have a full trace of nearly all family members deriving from this family except for Elizabeth. We have traced our Dowrick's in Veryan back to 1731.
I'm happy to share notes with others and try to connect a greater network
cheers
Jon

The Dowrick surname

Hi,

I am from Cornwall and am also very interested in my family name. I haven't actually completed much research on the subject, however I have got this far so that says something. I am particularly interested in connections with your area as the story goes in my family that my grandads uncle departed for the states around your area. If you didn't alraedy know the name actually means 'Cornwall'. The first part - 'Dow' refers to water ie as in a water dowser that finds water, and the second part 'rick' refers to a large open marsh, so put them both together and you have Cornwall - a large open wet marshland, which is how it would have been described in the old days. It is also one of the oldest surnames in Cornwall. There aren't many families around with that name. Also there appear to be connections in Australia, which also refers to the brother of the guy that went to the states, so I am told anyway. So I hope this information finds you, and that you may reply soon. Thanks for listening.

Hi, You may have guessed that I am another Dowrick. We live near Saffron Walden, Essex. My ancestors re also from Veryan so we are probably related! My father carried out a lot of research into the family tree and I still have all the data. Let me know if you want any information from it.

Best Wishes

Jon
