Joseph Gerald Donald DOYLE Obit
DOYLE, Joseph Gerald Donald (Major, Retired - R.C.A.F.)
Died suddenly on Sunday, July 6, 2008. Beloved husband of Dorothy. Cherished father of Heather Volk(Klaus), William Doyle(Shelley), Diane Magee(Stephen), Donald Doyle Jr.(Sandra), James Doyle(Wendy), Deborah Dowds, Patrick Doyle(Sara), Tim Tickner(Sue) and Roger Tickner(Ana). Adored Grandpa to his 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Born of Irish/French extraction in Ottawa, he joined the military during W.W. II. He attended Queen’s University before returning to his career in the R.C.A.F. where he rose to the rank of Major. As a navigator he flew the Lancaster, the CF100 and the CF 130 Hercules to name a few. He served as protocol officer at NORAD in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he chaperoned visiting dignitaries including President Nixon and Queen Elizabeth II. After he retired from the military he worked for Transport Canada and the United Nations in Uganda. Don maintained his ties with the R.C.A.F. by assisting with several reunions of the 408 Squadron.

After traveling the world, Don and his first wife Lorraine, settled in Port Dover where they were active members of the community for many years. He moved to Wilmot Creek after his wife’s death in 1999, where he found a new community and a new love – Dorothy Tickner. Together they shared a love of travel, laughter and singing. Don’s legacy will be his steadfast commitment to family and the many friends he made the world over. Family was central to all that Don did, and it will be that sense of family that will support us in this time of loss.

Friends will be received at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. South (Mill St. exit, just north of 401 at the lights) on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at ST. GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 250 Mill St. South, Newcastle, on Thursday, July 10, at 11a.m. Memorial donations to Sleeping Children Around the World would be greatly appreciated.
Martha Melcina Doyel b. 1849 in Scott co., ARK. is my grgrgrandmother, she married Elbert C. Brown b. 1850 Cooke co., Texas. I am trying to confirm that the info I have on the Doyel's is correct. I show her parents as William Doyel b. abt 1826 in Jasper co., Missouri and America ?? b. abt 1829 Ark., William's parents are James M. Doyel b.1802 in Joplin, Missouri, and Margaret Vinson b. 1808 Gallatin co., Kentucky. I can trace the Doyel's back several more generations, but I'm having trouble connecting James M. to his father John Doyel b. abt 1780 in North Carolina.
Also, does anyone know anything about America?
thanks, Joy

Re: James Doyle, Civil War Veteran

James: Since there are 2000 Doyle message boards, I picked yours as it was the first to mention Ireland! I have a newspaper clipping I will be glad to give to anyone who can connect to a James Doyle. The article was in a 1920 newspaper (probably from Washington or Oregon). The name Doyle is not in my family line and I'd would be most happy for it to find its way to a Doyle descendent. The article reports of James applying for US citizenship. He was born in Ireland, coming to US with his parents at the age of two. Served with the northern forces in the Civil War Aug '62-Aug '65. At time of article, he lived at 941 Blewett Street, but the article doesn't mention which city. If you are connected - or anyone else out there is connected - let me know and I'll gladly send you the article via snail mail.

Listers:

I am searching for a needle in a haystack.

Like many of you my IRISH went to England during the Famine and stayed there.

My ancestors, JAMES DOYLE, stonemason, and wife, MARY, dressmaker, left Wexford at that time and finally made their way to Wigan, Lancashire, England.

They had one known son: THOMAS DOYLE who married MARGARET DORAN on 21 January 1882 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wigan.

This was the second marriage for both parties. They were both widows. MARGARET DORAN's first husband was MICHAEL GORMAN who died at 25 of typhoid. They had one son, MICHAEL (later called himself STEPHEN) GORMAN. The first wife of THOMAS DOYLE is unknown. THOMAS DOYLE was 36 when he married MARGARET DORAN, age 30. So, THOMAS DOYLE was born ±1846 in Wexford, Wexford.

Any suggestions about finding this family in Wexford pre-Famine?

Getting the Irish back to Ireland in the early 1800s has been a difficult task.

Any help appreciated!

Bill Dorgan

Samuel Doyle d. 1799, Barren Co, KY

Hello,

I am the ninth descendant from a Samuel Doyle/Doyel who died in 1799 in Barren Co, Kentucky, USA. To be more easily identified, here is part of my lineage from younger to older:

Isaiah Luther Doyle/Doyel (1881-1953),
George Washington Doyle/Doyel (1850-1910),
Ritchard C. Doyle/Doyel (1822-?),
Samuel Doyle/Doyel (1785-?),
Gregory C Doyle/Doyel (1766-1846),
Samuel Doyle/Doyel (?-1799).

The older Samuel Doyle/Doyel and his son Gregory are the ones that I have some questions about.

Everyone that I've seen online agrees that Gregory was born on 19 Dec. 1766 and that he died on 10 Nov. 1846. They also agree that he died in Edmonson Co. KY. They do not agree on where he was born. Some say that he was born in Rowan Co, NC. Others say that he was born in Baganelstown, County Carlow, Ireland. They all agree that he married a lady named Martha Gott.

I know that his father, Samuel, died in 1799 in Barran Co, KY. Where was he born? Some people say that he was born in Maryland, others say that he was born in Ireland. Who were his parents? Most people say that they don't know who he married, others say her first name was Martha, and a few others say that her name was Martha Farmer. It's quite possible that these people are referring to different Samuel Doyels. At last count I think there were four of them on my family tree. There are probably other unrelated ones. Can anyone give me any information? Any official sources? unofficial?

Thank you!
The_Saxman (Zachary Aaron Doyle)

James Doyle (Ireland)

I am currently researching my Irish roots.
My grt grand father was born in Ireland circa 1870s.I think he was from Co Wicklow.
His fathers name was John Patrick Doyle but i do not know his mothers name or any siblings. He was a farm labourer, when he lived in Ireland. He met a lady named Elizabeth Kenna she lived on a farm in the Roundwood area of Co Wicklow a place called Moneytown. They left Ireland very urgently in 1900 as Elizabeth Kenna was in the family way. They arrived into the UK, where they married. That union produced 10 children, one was my grand father.Elizabeth Kenna's family still live in Ireland. Her parents were Timothy Kenna & Ellen Davis,Elizabeth also had 10 siblings, one of her brother's was sent to England to bring her back to Ireland at their parents insistance his name was Denis he also married & settled in UK.I have visited Ireland recently to meet the Kenna's but as i know so little about my grt grand father i cannot go any further into my history,if anyone can help me in any way or if any of the above rings any bells please dont hesitate to email me at the address provided. Many thanks in advance Julie Redman (nee doyle)

John S. Doyle of Camden Co., MO

My great great grandfather was John S. Doyle of Camden County, Missouri, born 1831 in Allen County, Ky. His parents were Allen Doyle born abt. 1775 and Rosa Horton born abt. 1778 both in North Carolina. Allen's father was James Doyle born abt. 1741 in Henrico County, VA. James father was probably William Doyle born abt. 1720, birthplace unknown.

I have been trying to relate to just who in our Doyle line immigrated from Ireland, assuming that is where he came from. I have no first hand proof of any of this.

I also show that James Doyle's father was William Doyle born about 1720, which also has no source of information. I have from a number of sources that "The Doyle, Reavis and Horton families start in Henrico County, Virginia in the late 1600's. There was an unbelievable amount of intermarriage between these three families. "They moved together, from Henrico Co. VA about 1770 to Rutherford County, North Carolina and were there through 1810 (census 1790,1800, 1810.)" Neither of these items have substantive proof.

On the other hand, there is plenty of information available on the Web that indicates that The Great Irish Famine took place from 1740 to 1741, the year of James Doyle's birth. Is it possible that William Doyle actually immigrated during the Great Irish Famine rather than his family having been here since the late 1600's? That could mean that James was indeed born here.

On the other hand, since we do not know where William Doyle was born, is it possible that he did not come to the New Country at all, and possibly his son James Doyle came here as a young man, perhaps in his twenties, during the famines of 1755, 1766,and 1783 after suffering much hardship in Ireland?

There was one James Doyle who arrived in Boston, Mass in 1766 from Ireland. In an Ancestry.com database: Boston Port Arrivals and Immigrants, 1715-16, 1762-69, we find Mr. James Doyle, a Trader listed on page 51. No other information is given. If the arrival was in 1715-16, could he be the father of my James born in 1741? If the arrival was in the 1762-1769 period, could our James Doyle be an immigrant who went early on to Henrico County, Virginia to settle?

These questions have plagued me about our Doyle/Doyel Ancestors...does anyone have any sources to define how this information came about, or any new information to reveal?

With such a common first and last name, the difficulties are many, but I believe there may be a cousin out there that has tracked down this information. I am most anxious to hear any new information anyone is willing to share.

Ken Krawczyk
Stephen P. Doyle
Stephen was born to parents Richard and Johanna Doyle. He was born in Newark, New Jersey in October of 1896. He later Married Eleanor and they had daughters Joanna born in 1925 and Evelyn born in 1927. Stephen work for a while for the Department of Public Works in Newark but later moved his family to Atlantic Highlands where he and Eleanor lived out their lives. Eleanor died in 1973 and Stephen died in 1983.

Stephen P. Doyle was my father Richard Doyle's uncle. My father is now deceased. My father was orphaned at the age of 8 years old. The court awarded his custody to his mother's sister and in time he totally lost track of his Doyle family. He met my mother while in the armed services during WWII and moved to western Nebraska. In all of these years I have never met another Doyle that I am related to. Stephen would be my great uncle. My father would have liked nothing better than to find one of his uncles and find his lost heritage.

I assume that Evelyn and Joanna could still be living and I would like to know who they are or who their off spring might be. Any information you might have would be appreciated.

Richard J. Doyle Jr.
hcir28@hotmail.com

She had at least 3 children with him Margaret Josephine (married to Joseph Doherty), Mary Elizabeth and Mary Charlotte.

Trying to trace my ggrandmother Eliza Doyle, born circa 1835, believe in Ireland married by ggrandfather Timothy Maher in early 1860's. 1870 census lived in Auburn NY with four sons James, John, Peter and Patrick. John is my grandfather. Have no prior history on Eliza. She may appear in 1880 census also in Auburn, but as Mary Maher with the same four sons plus a four year old addition William. Timothy is not mentioned assumed he may have died sometime in late 1870s. Any assistance would be appreciated. I know my grandfather and at least one brother Peter migrated to NYC - believe in Brooklyn where my grandfather, John died in 1922.

Doyle Clann Gatherings: 1999 & 2000

Hello Clan Doyle,
Chasing my own Wexford roots, I noted the Gatherings and looked for pictures of same on above, sadly not available and no contact/s seen? Reason, they visited my 'Family Seat' The Templars Inn in Templetown (F.o.S held since 1889 and with Kin buried in Templars Churchyard up to 1940). my Bro. and I had pilgrimage recently and paid tribute to GGF/GF/etc., we dined Templars, where Mother born/brought up. I tried to photograph as much as possible and had hoped the Doyle pics would supplement my efforts where I try to build a profile for our annals? Would appreciate help of any Member allowing me copy of such to build in, if my message is picked up? Grateful thanks from a 'CLEARY'. Mother left late 1920's, have brought a wee stone to lay in Her/Dad's grave in Ediburgh, he/me ex 'Seaforths', we also found His birthplace and living Family in Skerries Dub. Yes,another stone to remembering his leaving 23/12/1914 for Flanders! They couln't come home to Eire, so we brought it to them so to speak and, have found peace! Aye, Mike
Elizabeth Doyle, dau of Owen Doyle & Margaret Cuddy

In 1849, a small ship arrived in Norfolk/Portsmouth, VA.
The ship is not named in any of the resources; the
passengers were Irish. Listed were : Philip Doyle, 35; wife Bridget,34; Philip, 15; James, 12; Elizabeth, 8;
Catherine, 6; John,6; Richard, 4; Mary, 3. They were on the first page of passengers. On the second page, I found Patrick Doyle, 30; and Charles Doyle, 19.
I believe that Elizabeth is the daughter of Margaret Cuddy and Owen Doyle of Goresbridge. People who
did Elizabeth's genealogy also gave us this info.
Were Philip and Owen brothers? What is the connection with Patrick and Charles? DOYLE families
can you help me? Thanks so much, Margaret

The original Doyles were Owen, there is a different Irish spelling Owin, possiblity..? and Julia O'Rourke came to America in 1850-53..? the 1850 census shows them in Columbus OH. I have looked in Ireland but I wonder if they actually migrated from England..?
Son Patrick Doyle married Mary Ellen McRedmond. He was born in Columbus Ohio (son of Owen Doyle). I have looked in most American ports so the next place would be Canada.
Any links to your family..?

Thanks for any information you can provide.
Brenda

James Doyle of Ashtabula, Ohio is listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster."
April 28, 1894 Page 4

Mrs. Wm. Doyle, of Menekaune, near Menominee, poured kerosene oil in the kitchen stove from a can, last week, and an explosion occurred which scattered the blazing oil on her clothing.
Edward John Doyle m. Catherine O'Locklin

I am researching the Doyle family that seems to have settled in Brooklyn. My grandfather's name was John Clement Benedict Doyle and Married a Swedish woman named Esther Clareen. They lived in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. John Fathers was (I think) was Edward John Doyle Married to Catherine O'Locklin. They had 10 children Anazsasia (sp), Eiona, John, Catherine, Bessie,Stacy, Martin, Joseph, Edna, Loretta.
We believe that Edward and Catherine were born in New York. We also believe that Edwards parents (whom I am trying to identify) were born in Ireland (County Cork we think). Does anyone have more information that can help? Thanks

I am researching JOHN FARRELL and CATHERINE DOYLE.

Their son James was baptised in Abbeyknockmoy, Galway, Ireland in 1871. I believe there is also a son called John Joseph.

John died before his son James got married in Warrington, Lancashire, (1895).

There is no evidence of John Farrell (father) coming to England. I think Catherine, and son John came but the only current evidence I have is James’s marriage. Catherine died in (1911) in Warrington.
We are looking for any info on John M. Doyle who married Susan Edmundson and lived in Lewis Co., KY. They had 10 children: Maudie Pearl, Charles F., Mary Ellen, James L., George L., Clarence Henry, Dolly Marie, John Jr., David, and Fannie. There might have also been a Cecil. We don't have any exact dates but the first child was born in 1887 which would probably put John and Susan's DOB around the late 1860's to 1870 or so. Thanks.
