Greetings,

I am assisting my wife with some research on the Drayton South Carolina / Arkansas Connection. Does anyone recall hearing stories of family memebers moving to Arkansas around the late 1890s or early 1900s? Rance Drayton shows up in Arkansas on the 1930 census reports and she can document the family history from Rance while in Arkansas but not before that time.

Other name connected with Rance are Rose Lee Bonner which was his wife and Rose Lee Bonner parents are Dan Bonner and Frances Smith.

Also, if you know of any Draytons in Arkansas - no matter where you are - I'm sure my wife would like to hear your story no matter how small the detail. As a side note, my mom did not know anything about her family but she knew that an "e" was dropped from her name going from Goode to Good. That one piece of information help me go back to 1807. Again, any stories or any information dealing with Rance,Arkansas or any other Drayton inforamtion will be helpful making the connection to SC and then moving forward with her search.

Thank You,
Rod Wafer
Wafer by Birth -Drayton in Spirit

Our grandfather's name in Christopher Drayton and he married Edna Sherwood......correct me or add where necessary.

I am looking for some clues on my ancestry. I am looking for a Husband and Wife Drayton that lived in South Carolina but were originally from Ireland. They would have left out of South Carolina somewhere around 1811 or 1812 with a wagon train. The headmaster of the train's last name would have been Dean. Sometime during the travel an epidemic of yellow fever or typhoid would have broken out and the Drayton parents would have died but their infant son Charles Drayton lived. He was informally adopted by the Headmaster Dean. The first acount I can find of Charles Drayton (Dean) is in 1850 in Alabama. Please help!

I'm not sure of the meaning. I do not have any other documents. His social security # did not turn up anything but with today's technology, I can try again. He lived in Brooklyn, NY and not sure when he arrived but my mother knew him in the 1930's. He did service in the National Guard during WWII. He died in Brooklyn circa 1966. Can there be any connection?

Hi Nicola
Yes that would be the right one thanks very much for that. Soulby Best was the brother of my great great grandfather Webb Best, I don't think he and Charlotte ever had any children so I can confirm if anyone is interested that this branch of Draytons did end with Charlotte although I've never looked into any other branches, it also seems that Charlotte was an only child so I assume that her father's line ended here too.
Many thanks
Michelle

Thanks for the information. But all of my William's family stayed in the WNY area. I found that William came over from England with his father and siblings and landed in Philly but have not found any trace of them after they landed. Maybe some of them went to the NYC area, that would be an interesting connection. Some how my William joined the army and fought in the War of 1812 and ended up in western NY area and moved around a bit but for the most part all his decendants stayed in this area. That William Drayton could be from the South Carolina Draytons. That was a large family both white and African American. Thanks again.

www.draytonreunion.info

I am a great greatgrandaughter of Simon Drayton (age 66 in the 1870 census), my greatgrandfather was Simon's son, Stephen. Sylvia Chisolm, quoted in a number of slave narratives (see archive page of our website-she describes being sold away at the age of 8), was Stephen's sister. She married a Chisolm named Daniel. One of her descendants is Mayor of Estill, SC (and is the town caterer - he catered the lunch at our last family reunion in August 2007!) Seaborn, a great-grand uncle(?), is buried at Thankful Baptist Church along with other Draytons. He left the land on which sits the church to his young wife Elizabeth. She remarried a Furman and left the land to the Church when she died. My father has copies of various deeds and we have an extensive tree on ancestry.com which I have not yet made public.
I don't have much hope this post will find you, but have to try right?. I found your post about the Drayton Clan. As far as I can tell your mother was my grandfather's sister. My grandfather's name was William Bradford Drayton. I was actually stuck until I came across your post. I knew that his mother's maiden name was Pratt but not her first name. Any info would be greatly appreciated. My family does not know many of the Draytons, although they did/do(?) keep in contact with a Bob Drayton (another of the siblings?)
This william drayton that I am referring to is also the father of william drayton aka Flav Flav of Public Enenmy - the rap group. William Drayton is deceased but William Drayton/Flava Flav is very much alive. There could be some connection.

This line descends to Isham and Vere.
The Isham connects to the Randolphs of Virginia.
Can anyone confirm the parents of Catharine Lovett?
I am searching for any details of Draytons who actually lived in the village of Drayton. The farthest back I can get is Henry Drayton, born in Puckington (?), Somerset circa 1770. He may have married Sarah Lavour. They had a son, William (b 1816 in Drayton).

Who can help?

Hi Doreen,
I think I'm the woman you spoke to who told you that I'm related to the Draytons in Catt. County. Are you the same lady who contacted my grandmother, Leona Bossman?

If you're not, you may want to contact her, as she knows quite a bit about the Catt. and Chaut. Co. Draytons. The information is a little spotty because her grandfather, Alfred Drayton was estranged from his wife, whose maiden name was Minnie Price.

Grandma's dad's name was Ray Drayton. He passed away when he was around 93 (he wasn't sure of his birthdate) in 1990. He had three siblings who lived: Amy, Veva and Arthur.

Alfred lived out in Bemus point when grandma was growing up. His known siblings were Jim Drayton and Hannah(Drayton) Seekings. There was also a Drayton who died in a logging accident on the Allegheny River who is related to the family.

Article: Project to Bring SC Slave [Drayton] Lineages Online

Project to Bring SC Slave Lineages Online
Posted by Allison

For African-American genealogists, breaking through the brick wall of slavery can require thorough, painstaking research into the records of the slaveowning families—with no guarantee of success. You can’t simply log on to a Web site and expect to find meticulously researched and reconstructed lineages of slave families that connect all the dots for you.

But that’s exactly what three organizations plan to create for descendants of the slaves of Charleston, SC’s Magnolia Plantation and others operated by the Drayton family. In a project funded by the plantation’s foundation, the University of South Florida’s all-volunteer Africana Heritage Project will pore over the Draytons' plantation journals to re-create the family trees of its slaves. Those family files will be posted on genealogy wiki WeRelate, where family history researchers will be able to access them for free. Africana Heritage Project founding director Toni Carrier says the files—in GEDCOM format—will appear gradually as the research progresses. "We aim to have the first batch up by mid-July," she says.

Magnolia Plantation is also collaborating with the Africana Heritage Project on a new Web site to be launched in March 2008: Lowcountry Africana will document African-American heritage in South Carolina, Georgia and northeastern Florida’s historic rice-growing region—in particular, its unique Gullah/Geechee culture. The site will feature slaveholding families’ plantation records, a searchable database of primary historical documents, name indexes to Lowcountry history and genealogy books, historical photographs and more.

Carrier encourages genealogists and families with ties (or suspected ties) to Drayton family plantations to contact her organization. "We would love to invite them to join this exciting journey of discovery," she says.

6/26/2007 1:28:31 PM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Comments [2]

source: http://www.familytreemagazine.com/insider/Project+To+Bring+S...

A.L. Drayton of Fort Bend County,Texas and earlier South Carolina

I am seeking information on a man named A.L. Drayton who is listed on the 1860 Census for Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas. The census listed his occupation as a "clerk" and stated he was originally from South Carolina. He is listed as living with a merchant's family by the name of Calder.

It appears that he served with the 4th Texas Infantry early during the Civil War, then later in the Confederate Navy, and finally (after being captured) in the Union Navy.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any information on A.L. Dratyon, his family, or any of his descendants.

Thanks.

Terry Foenander

Hi, wondering if anyone can shed a little light, I am looking for the mother of Charlotte DRAYTON, daughter of William DRAYTON born 1823 in Grimsby Lincolnshire. Charlotte was born in 1847 in Cleethorpes Lincolnshire and on the 1881 census is living with her father and her husband Soulby Best at 4 Ratten Bds (Bounds?) Great Grimsby. I have several possibilites for William's wife but am unable to access local records as I live too far away and am hoping that someone out there knows who she is. I know that William was a widower in 1881 so her death date would be before this.
Many thanks
Michelle Hart

For all those connected with this enquiry, have a look at my own website - www.grimke.co.uk - and click on to the top-right hand corner, where you will find details of an exciting project to unearth all the records from the Drayton plantations. Please get in touch with either Toni Carrier, the project Director, or Joyce Reese McCollum. I know that if you have any family connection with either Drayton Hall or Magnolia Gardens, they will very anxious to hear from you. My great-great-grandfather was the younger brother of Rev. John Grimke-Drayton who developed Magnolia Gardens after the Civil War.

I would also be very interested in getting in touch with you.

Best wishes in 2008 - which at the moment has started out a bit rocky!!!!!

Bill Drayton.
