Jost Dreisbach's journal

JOST DREISBACH'S HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL BOOK. I understand that Jost Dreisbach (1721-1794) of Lehigh Township, Northampton County, PA. kept a journal. This would be an old, leatherbound book with handwritten notes, in German. Jost would have used the book to keep track of his business and his family. Traditionally the eldest son inherited the book. That would be John Jost Dreisbach (1757-1813), who moved to Herkimer Co., New York. Alternatively, it could have gone to the son who stayed home, Adam Dreisbach (1762-1849) who married Maria Margaret Hamscher. If so, it could have gone through the maternal line to the Hower family, or to another, unknown family.

Does anybody have any information regarding the whereabouts of this journal that belonged to Jost Dreisbach?
Thank you for the information about your website. I'll write more after I've visited it.

Just want to let you know that about 85% of "Dreisbachs" pronounce their last name as Drysbock. The rest say Dresback, Dreesbock, Trysbock and no doubt other variations. Some of these pronunciations arose when one Dreisbach moved to an area and the local people gave the name a particular pronunciation. The difference between Drysbock and Dreesback probably arose that way. I would bet your grandmother said Dress-i-back.

I do hope you will be able to make it to the reunion. As reunion coordinator, I have a bit of a vested interest in this :-) You will certainly meet a lot of Dreisbachs (of various spellings and pronunciations) there.

By the way, you are the second person today to ask me how the Dreisbach name is pronounced! And to think, that before today I have never had that question put to me.

Cheers,
Marcia Dreisbach Falconer

Hi, I am also working on the Dreisbach family. According to The Dreisbach Book (pub. 1998) your Daniel is a son of John Peter Dreisbach (1757-1810) and a grandson of Simon Dreisbach Jr. and great-grandson of Simon Dreisbach Sr. the 1743 immigrant.

Daniel was born in Lehigh TOWNSHIP in Northampton County (not in Lehigh County - easy to confuse but almost no Dreisbachs come from Lehigh COunty). The Dreisbach Book has Daniel and his son Daniel H. Dreisbach (no dates) and also mentions a Hiram Dreisbach (no dates) who had a son Daniel (again, no dates). I am wondering if these are one and the same person.

The Dreisbach Book also does not show ANY of Daniel "Hiram"'s descendants. Is there some place where I can see a family tree?

By the way.. the Dreisbach Family Reunion will be this coming June in Tohickon (near Quakertown) ... it would be great to see people from Daniel "Hiram"'s family there - and to present your family tree! There is a reunion website:
http://sites.google.com/site/dreisbach2010familyreunion/

Cheers,
Marcia Dreisbach Falconer

Daniel Dreisbach, 1782-1853, born and reared in Lehigh Co., PA came to the area in 1837. He purchased what is known as the Hower-Slote House (built in 1829) situated on the site of the Revolutionary War battle of Fort Freeland! Yes, that's right.

His son, Daniel "Hiram" 1821-1886 conducted (late 1860's to early 1880's) the Turbotville "Eagle" Hotel, which is still in operation.

Both Fort Freeland and The Turbotville Hotel are landmarks in upper Northumberland.

The Dreisbach family of Turbotville is buried at the Old Turbotville Cemetery (north cemetery off Route 54) on Lot 287 which is near the center of the cemetery.

Descendants of the Dreisbachs include, but are not limited to, the following families: Stahl, Stahlnecker, Lynn, Reynolds, Hess, Bittner, Kerstetter, Shetler, Balliet, Mincemoyer, Smith, Plymette, Mathias, Kisner, Morgan, Dillon, Hamrick, Yoder, Meckley, Martz, Becher, Campbell, Moser, and Allen.

FMI documentation see: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/a/Kay-A-Stahl...

I am interested in descendants and relatives of these families.

I am descended from Henry Dreisbach, 1735-1808 through his son, Jacob Dreisbach. Would like to make contact with Dreisbach descendants of this family. In 2010, there will be a Dreisbach Family Homecoming in the greater Philadelphia area. We will be "featuring" Bucks County Henry sites, and would like to include as many descendants in the activities as possible. More information on the activities will be posted, so watch for more details as time goes on. Carol

Hello, Im Katharina Dreisbach, I just recently came to know that there are Dreisbachs in the USA and even yearly family reunions. its so interesting and also a bit strange for me that -according to what I read- the first recorded dreisbach immigrant came from Balde, a small village only 15 min from my village (Birkelbach) in this rural region which is quite remote (but Germany is small,so it only takes 2 and a half hours by train to Frankfurt from here).
I just wanted to say, IF SOMEONE ONE DAY TRAVELS TO WITTGENSTEIN to visit the place of his/her ancestors, I WOULD LOVE TO GUIDE this person(s) around and offer a place to stay in my parents home (though I cannot promise 100% for sure cause from time to time Im abroad). Its a calm and quite beautiful wooded region with a castle and some old churches.
Im also LOOKING FOR A PENFRIEND, preferably snail mail, between 20 and 30 (Im 24) with the name Dreisbach or similar.

Simon is also listed in records from Brunswick as Samuel, at least to what I can determine. There was only one son I could find, William, but he had a lot of sisters, according to the 1840 census, where Rebecca is listed as widowed.

The murder of Emanuel Dreisbach of Ohio circa 1864

Mr. Emanuel Dreisbach, an old and weathly citizen of Amanda township in Fairfield County, was engaged in hauling wheat to his threshing machine, leaving down a gap, through which a cow, belonging to John Corder, entered, when Mr. Dreisbach directed one of his boys to drive her out, but not to set the dog on her. This, however, was not followed, and the dog drove her out, but not injuring her. Corder seeing this, had some words with one of the hands, and then proceeded to a Mr. Young's and borrowed a gun, saying he wanted to shoot some squirrels. He then went to Mr. Dreisbach's barn yard, when Mr. D. requested him not to shoot the dog, promising to pay all damages the cow might have received, the reply was "G-d d-n you , I will kill you" whereupon he raised the rifle and shot Mr. D. in the left side, under the lung. He survived about eight hours. The deed was done in the presence of two or three of Mr. D's children, and the men at the threshing machine. Corder fled, and had not been taken at the last accounts. He was a tenant of Mr. D's and had received many favors at his hands. This was a most foul, cold-blooded murder.

Looking for info on and descendents of Dolores (b. 1921), Rita (b. 1925) and William (b. 1927-28) Dresbeck, children of William Francis and Florence Ann Dresbeck. All lived in Sonoma Co., CA, but all b. Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. I have death info on the parents, but nothing on marriages or deaths for the children. Perhaps Leroy Dresbeck (b. ca. 1933, d. ca 1979 WA state) is also a son of these parents, but not sure. Any info greatly appreciated.

Marylyn,

Good question. Fry/Frey is my paternal line and Dreisbach is one of my maternal lines and I know of no relationship.

The Dreisbach Family Assn. database shows only one Catherine Nagel who married Elias Youngman. Their daughter Catherine married a John Driesbach b. 1762 d. 1823 son of Martin Dreisbach and Anna Eva Hoffman.

The database shown no John Frey.

I've only been able to take my Fry/Frey line back to a great-great grandfather John J. who was born about 1823 who married a Susann Kuechlein. I know nothing about his parents.

But there must be a relationship somewhere if they were baptismal sponsors.

Ray

Gayle--

I don't know where this John fits in. Others in Summit County at the time descend from Charles F., son of Jost 1773. It's possible that this John is Charles's son, but the records are confusing. I have that John as b. c1851, m. Anna, with child Ida. Evidently you have combined these two Johns, but he was age 58 in the 1900 Census. Have you made any progress on him? His wife's surname comes from LDS marriage records of Summit Co, I don't have her parents.

Descendants of John Dreisbach

1 John DREISBACH b: Jul 1842 in Pennsylvania d 1: Jun 23, 1926 in Summit Co, OH d 2: Aft. 1920 in Summit Co, OH Residence: 1900 Norton twp, Summit Co, OH
. +Orrie D.
Rev. Alfred Franklin Dreisbach, A. B. of Penn.

Rev. Alfred Franklin Dreisbach, A. B.

Rev. Alfred Franklin Dreisbach, A. B., resident pastor of the Reformed Church at Shrewsbury, was born in Northampton County, Penn., September 8, 1851. His parents were Jacob and Matilda (Gormanton) Dreisbach, of Pennsylvania, and of German and French descent. They had a family of eight children, three sons and one daughter (of whom Rev. Alfred is the youngest) now living. Of the parents, the mother died in 1861, at the age of forty-nine years; while his father is still residing at his native place. The primary education of our subject was received at the public schools, but at the age of sixteen years he went to Easton Collegiate Institute, where he remained nine or ten terms. He studied the languages under Rev. Dr. E. W. Reinecke, of Nazareth, Penn., for two years, and also taught school for six terms. At the age of twenty-one he entered Franklin & Marshall College at Lancaster, Penn., and graduated in 1877 as A. B. He at once entered the theological seminary at Lancaster, from which he graduated in May, 1880, and in August he was called to his present charge, and was ordained as soon as called. B.
Could Driess, Drais, Drace, Treese, etc be shorthand?

Just wondering if my Peter Drais, or any of a dozen other spellings, may have shortened his name? He immigrated to Philadelphia @1730-1740, and was a leather dresser, tanner, etc by trade. He was born in Germany. I know name changes were common, and we haven't been able to get any further back than said Peter. Would appreciate input.

Rev. Simon Dreisbach (b. 1809 PA)

The Rev. Simon Dreisbach b. 1809 near Lewisburg, PA was son of Martin Dreisbach, Gson of Jacob and GGson of Martin (b. 1717). He served as a minister for the Church of God. Is there anywhere or anyone that had a list of the churches where he served. My GGgrand father was Simon's son John Martin (b. 1832 in Cumberland Co. Pa). Am trying to find birth or baptism records to complete DAR registration. Also have complete line of Simon after he moved to Illinois in 1860's. Any help or hints welcome.

TIA Joy in Illinois
