I looked to see if I could find your Elijah in either one of Jim Dresser's databases, but so far don't find any exact matches. I do see your guy in the 1870 and 1860 census records for Broome County, NY. Then during 1850 and 1840, I find him living in Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. According to the 1870 census, he was born in New Jersey, but according to the 1860 and 1850 census records, he was born in Massachusetts.

The marriage of Elijah Dresser and his wife Elizabeth Ann Bourdett is recorded in New Jersey records, but there is no indication as to exactly where or when the marriage took place -- only that it was somewhere in New Jersey.

That's all I see for now.

-- Mary Dresser Taffet
Board & List Admin for DRESSER

Hello Jim,
My name is Anne Elizabeth Marie Dresser Brown born Oct. 13, '52. Right now I am shaking, excited and crying in disbelief! I believe I am your little sister! My father was Gerald Joseph Dresser and my mother was Thérèse Gilberte Moison Dresser.I am sorry to tell you that Dad died in 1957 (31 yrs. old) of heart disease. I was 5 yrs. old. Our mother died in Oct. 2000 (colon cancer) having never said anything to us about you. My older sister Jacqueline(born 19/09/48_ and I never understood why my mother never had a lavish wedding like her sister had. Mom & Dad eloped.They were married July 3, 1947 I am so in shock. I happen to go through some old papaers of Dad's yesterday which would have been your birthday!. Just for fun I was going to look up the Penetryn co. up to see exactly what Dad did. All I knew is that he built bridges. Dad had dual citizenship & worked in both Canada and U.S.A His mother died giving birth and his father, George lived in Albany, NY. He came to his son's funeral and I have never seen him again. Dad has one remaining brother, Donald living here in Ca. This is so dreamlike& surreal for me right now.I can't wait to speak to you and hopefully meet you. I bet you have dark brown eyes and hair and not too tall,5ft6 with a roundish face.We also had a brother Paul, who died in '67 at 17 yrs. of age of a kidney transplant. I imagine you must look very much like Paul. I hope your health is good. I have retinal eye disease, supposedly hereditary but Mom had no eye problems and Dad died so young- I'll never know whwere it really comes from. Anyways, our Mother was a teacher,so is Jacqueline and so was I until I retired on disability because of my eyes. I am going to end this because I can't wait to hear from you! Bye for now, anxiously awaiting answer, Anne Telephone # (519)352-5539
e-mail annebrown52@yahoo.ca
Jacqueline's email brownja@porchlight.ca

I am looking info on John C. Dresser who was in the New Hampshire 2nd Infantry during the Civil War. The 1890 Veterans Schedule for Franklin, NH, lists my g-g-grandmother, Augusta Johnson Newton, as being a widow of him. But we never knew she was married to anyone of that name. Any leads that link these two will be very helpful.

I looked over Jims Partial line and see Eugene Dresser with a birth date of 1851. According to the 1930 census he was born around 1847, he was 83 at this time. I recently found a 1900 cenus of Scipio twp. Hilladale Co., Mich showing a Eugene Dresser birth date of 1847 married to Jenny A. The area of the census is very close to Pulaski, about 4 miles away. Also in the 1860 census of Scipio twp. Hillsdale Co., Mich. I found a Family of Dressers

Hiriam Dresser 36
Caroline           31
Ella                  11
Eugene             9      Born abt.1850
Carrie                4
Guddy               2
This family was also in Mosherville. This is what makes things confusing. I believe Hiriam dresser family is not associated with my eugene and Mary. But I am only guessing. Brooklyn Michigan is on the other side of Jackson. Brooklyn is about 30-40 miles to the East.

I also found Eugene Dresser working as farm laborer at the age of 32 (1847-48) in the 1880 census of Pulaski, Mich also. I am basically researcing the Lovitt and Caywood line of Pulaski.

I have been doing some research on the Horace Dresser family of Minnesota and I believe that Elizabeth M. was the youngest daughter of Horace and Elizabeth (Johnson) Dresser. She was living with her mother, Elizabeth Dresser, in Santa Cruz, California in the 1900 US census.

Von Curry

John,

If this Mary is indeed the sister of Eugene Dresser, then perhaps she is an as of yet unknown child of James Eugene P. Dresser and his wife Janet Hay who moved from Columbia county, New York, to Michigan. Jim Dresser has James Eugene P. Dresser and what is known about his family available in the partial lines database:

<http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jimdres...;

The son Eugene Dresser was living in Pulaski, Jackson county, Michigan in the 1880 census according to Jim's notes. But there is no mention of a daughter named Mary in Jim's file. I just took a peak at the 1850 census for James and Jane Dresser in Jackson County, Michigan, and I see no child by the name of Mary. In fact, there are no daughters listed at all -- only two sons. I also took a peek at the 1930 census. I do see a Mary R. Caywood with brother Eugene Dresser listed there, and both are described as having been born in Michigan, with their father and mother both born in New York.

All I can tell you right now is that there is a good chance that your Mary R. Caywood is indeed the sister of Eugene Dresser, and therefore the daughter of James Eugene P. Dresser and Jane Hay, but that as of right now, nobody knows anything about her. Jim has her parents on file, but there is as of yet no identification of who her paternal grandparents might have been. That's why they are in the partial lines database (i.e. because there is as of yet no known connection to the main line of John Dresser from England who immigrated to Rowley, Massachusetts in the 1600's).

I know of one other person who is researching the family of James Dresser and Jane Hay; Jim may know of more.

-- Mary Dresser Taffet
Board & List Admin for DRESSER

Kathleen,

It appears that my hunch was probably correct. Anthony and Mary Lavelette in the 1870 census with Julius Dresser appear to be the children from the first marriage of Julius's wife, Teresa/Theresa/Theressa Larabell.

If the facts shown in the following WorldConnect/Ancestry World Tree files are accurate, then Julius's wife Teresa/Theresa/Theressa Larabell was first married to Anthony Laviolette, and was the mother of Anthony, Marie, Mary Emily, and Mary Laviolette:

<http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jacgray...;

<http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a1022...;

The second file shows Theresa as having been married twice, with the second marriage to a Julius Normandy or Normandin.

I don't know whether Julius changed his surname from Dresser to Normandy/Normandin or what, if this latter entry is factual.

If you or your spouse are descended from Julius Dresser, what can you tell us about him?

-- Mary Dresser Taffet
Board & List Admin for DRESSER

I have just found entry in a Milwaukee County (Wis.) probate file for a John Joseph Gassen:

"Jan 1873 amt. rec'd as heir of Mary M. Dreser"

This document in the probate record was assembled by Mr. Gassen's guardian, also his brother-in-law, George Goelz. This item was found in a hastily scribbled list, and made from bank records several years after the fact, so the death may have occurred later than 1872, and certainly well before 1872 if the estate took a while to settle.

I am not able to find a Mary M. Gassen Dreser in my Gassen research, but happy to share Gassen family info. with anyone who knows of a "Mary M. Dreser" as mentioned above.

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee, Wis.>Chicago, Illinois
I have not solved the mystery so far. I also checked all the Milwaukee area church records for the period to see if there was a burial recorded. I have more reasons to trust the source of the name as it is written down (in a probate inventory) than mistrust the source. Short of accessing bank records of the period, it may just have to remain a mystery.

Thanks for your follow-up,

Gary Rebholz
Chicago, Illinois

I have an original studio photograph of “Roy Dresser”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1910, in Dubuque (Dubuque Co.) IA, and Roy looks to be about age 18.

I found Roy W. Dresser, son of Warren N. and Mary E. Dresser, in the 1910 census for Van Buren (Lee Co.) IA. Roy’s DOB was Jul 1892. In the WWI Draft registration, he is listed as Roy Warren Dresser. SSDI shows he was born 21 Jul 1892, and died Lee Co., IA in Nov 1976.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Roy Warren Dresser.
