Victoria Elizabeth Drewry (1878-1948) - Virginia - 1900 census

I am looking for my great-grandmother in the 1900 census. I think she was somewhere in the Southampton, Surry, or Sussex county VA area. She is in the 1880, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses in the same area, so I have no indication that she moved. She did teach school in Waverly from 1894-1899. She married Sidney Thomas Barker in April 1901.

I also am a descendant of these Drewys. My great grandmother was Nancy Helen Drewry, daughter of Edwin & Eliza Jones (Williams) Drewry. They came to Spalding/Pike Cty Georgia from Drewryville Va after Rev. war. Nancy Helen Drewry married William H Carpenter of Elbert Cty Ga. Helen Drewry Carpenter died Jan 21, 1928 and is buried at Concord church, Elbert Cty, Georgia. You may find useful information on the Drewrys at the following web site:
http://www.anniebees.com/Drewry/Drewry.htm
And by the way Cleora stayed a family name - passed on to me!

I now have information back to James Drury/Drewry and Rebecca Coverdale. If anyone is interested I'll try to help you. Surnames that are included: Drewry, Wannamaker, Coverdale, Snowdon, Caverley, Rogers, Morgan, Snarr... many more. This family is from Selby/Aughton, Yorkshire, England. Several of them migrated to Hastings County, Ontario Canada in the mid-1800's. The main surname I am working on is Drewry, but I have a lot of info on the Wannamaker, Coverdales, and Snarr's also. Happy Hunting!
Beverly servati@cafes.net

Are these African American Drewerys? My GGGrandmother Rebecca (Becky)Drewery-Comer was born in Jones County, Georgia then accompanied her mistress to Alabama when she married one of the prominent Comers. Becky was wet nurse to Braxton Braggs Comer, Governor of Alabama. Perhaps there is a connection here? Becky Drewery married one of the Comer slave--Henry Comerand lived in Barbour County Alabama. I am not sure, but I think the 1880 census lists one of her parents as being born in South/North Carolina.

Drewry Fox King William County, Virginia

I’m searching for information about Ann Drewry (also spelled Dury or Drewery) and George Fox of King William County Virginia. I have seen many genealogies for them indicating that George’s parents were Thomas Fox and Leah Lipsomb, and that Ann’s parents were John Drewry and Sarah Slaughter.

Unfortunately, everyone I have asked has copied the information from someone else and I have yet to find any original source for the information. In case it helps, I have evidence of their marriage and them having had the following children:

i. Drewry Fox (George) was born in 1802 in Brandywine, King William Co., Virginia. He died in 1850/1860.

Drewry married Emeline . Emeline was born in 1813/1814 in Virginia. She died in 1889/1900.

Drewery and Emeline (aka Evaline aka Elizabeth) had the following children: Amanda Fox was born in 1836 in Virginia; James H. Fox was born in Aug 1838/1841 in Virginia and died in 1910/1920 (married (1) Sallie L. who was born in 1843 in Virginia and died in 1870/1880 in Richmond, Virginia and then (2) Mary Lula in 1880 and she was born in Jul 1856 in Virginia and died after 1930); Sophia Fox who was born in 1842 in Virginia; Isabella Fox who was born in Dec 1844 and died on 16 Jul 1846 in Richmond, Virginia; Susan Fox who was born in 1846/1848 in Virginia; Ida Fox who was born in 1849/1850 in Virginia; and, Emma Fox who was born in 1852/1853 in Virginia.

ii. Mary Fox was born in Brandywine, King William Co., Virginia.

iii. Sarah Ann Fox was born in Brandywine, King William Co., Virginia.

iv. John Fox was born in Brandywine, King William Co., Virginia.

I also have seen records indicating that after George FOX died (presumably in the early 1810s) that Ann married Gideon Bosher. From that marriage they had the following children: Robert Bosher, Sophia Bosher, Elizabeth Bosher, Isabella Bosher and Emily Bosher.

Any dates to help with the above or connections to former generations would be greatly appreciated.

Neil
I will give you more info after I re-upload my genealogy disc (my puter died and I just got a new one and I haven't worked on genealogy in quite awhile). There were quite a few Earles in Seminole and I think they were all related. I'll get back to you soon.
(The reason for the difference in spelling comes from John Harrison Drewery who changed it from Drewry. I have no idea why.)

My paternal grandmother was an Earles. My father Bill Hicks had a cousin named Bill Drewry whose mother was also an Earles. Bill was married to an Evelyn. We moved from Seminole in 1952, so I lost touch with this family. My older brother and I have been working in genealogy, and have been looking for this side of the Earles family. I am trying to establish the connection of Ella Earles to our family. If this is the right family, would you contact me at marysue37@cox.net or in a message.

My ancestor William Drewry married Julia Derryberry in Tippah County in about 1852. He was in the Mississippi 10th Infantry and killed at the battle of Munfordville, KY in 1862. His son William (my great grandfather) was born on Jun 2, 1862, supposedly in Corinth. But that was only 2 days after the Confederate Army withdrawal and occupation by the Union Army. I've found no record of Julia and her son in Mississippi after that although she moved her family to Arkansas about 1870-72. She and her family are missing from the 1870 census of any state. The Derryberrys appear to have left the area after the war, but there are Drewrys/Drurys still listed in the census. I am trying to find out how she managed during that difficult time. Any information would be appreciated.

all of them migrated to Ontario, Canada in the early 1800's possibly around 1845. The husbands name was John Drury (my 3rd great grandfather) and his wife Anne Broder. They had 10 children: Elizabeth; Ann; Mary; John; Hannah; William (my 2nd great grandfather);( our Edwards father, mother, Ann Snowdon) James; Martha; George; and Esther. After this generation I have quite a bit of information, but it stops here. Any help would truly be appreciated! The last spelling of the last name was changed to Drewry when they became citizens of Canada.

They lived in Stirling, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. The kids were all born in Pocklington near Thornton, Yorkshire England except the last three, if my memory serves me right.

Our Charles Edward's stats:
B:3 July 1851
D: 24 Dec 1865 (14yrs, 5 mths, 21days old)

We have another one in the next generation, who I am sure was named after this one. His parents were George Fredrick Drewry, Sr. & Nancy Elizabeth Caverley.

Charles Edward #2 Stats:
B: 15 Mar 1891 at the homestead in Stirling
D: 19 Jun 1954

We have quite a few William's:

Son of John Drury & Elizabeth Broder
William Drury B: 3 Jul 1817 Yorkshire, England
D: 12 Apr 1876

Son of John Drury & Jane ? (possibly Ramsey)
B: 5 Jan 1848
D: ?

Son of Wm Drewry and Ann Snowdon
William Albert Drewry
B: 10 -July-1849
D: ?

Son of George Fredrick Sr. and Nancy E Caverley
William Drewry
B: 23 Nov 1881
D: 2 Jul 1959

I hope something here helps you!! Let me know please.

English Drewrys

I came acrossed some Drewry familys in Eastchurch, Kent, England and wonder if these connect to the Drewrys that went to Charles Parish, Virginia. They are James and Anne Drewry, children and Christening dates: Alice (28 Jul 1622), John (21 Jul 1633), Mary (3 Apr 1636), Henry (27 Oct 1639), Frances(23 May 1641). Don't know if Alice belongs because of the date difference and a mother was not listed. Allen Drewry is listed with no wife and these children: Elizabeth (10 Dec 1624), Allen(10 Aug 1626), Richard(25 Feb 1628). The last family William and Jane Drewry and children:Mary(18 Oct 1629), John(14 Aug 1631), Joane(4 Mar 1632), Alice(25 Jul 1636), George(24 Sep 1637). These names were found in Christening records.

Re: Drewry''s in England
Hi,

In answer to your query about how the Drewry/Drury name
was split, the answer is:-

The so called landed gentry and church kept the peasants in ignorance by denying any learning, so they had the upper hand. When the census started the enumerators (clerks)
could barely spell the names themselves and put all names down as they thought it should be. This has caused a lot of problems.

Even today mistakes are made in the correct spelling and
causes the problems. My line comes from Lincolnshire
then Hull in Yorkshire, and is rife in mistakes that caused a lot of problems to me by the different spelling,

My first experience started when I first went to school when
my name was put in the register wrongly. Having been taught to read and write by my Mother I complained and had to get my parents to call into the school to get it corrected.

Hope this helps.

Bernard Drewry. bernard.drewry@ntlworld.com

In 1860 he is listed as a bookseller and in 1865 a tobacconist. Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Neil Raiford
Decatur, AL

DREWRY (several different) in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Drewry, Leona Ross (Nonnie)
Drewry, Nonnie
Drewry, T.

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...
