Hello, I was searching through posts hoping to see other information and noticed that you mention Anastacia Drinkwater. She was my great, great grandmother and I have very little information on her, but I do believe that there is a picture of her at my grandmother's house that I will be posting soon.

I, too, am a direct descendent of John Drinkwater through his son Myron Clark Drinkwater, and his son Orlo Hine Drinkwater. Myron died Mar. 15, 1861, and is buried in Cedar Point Cemetery, Cedar Point, Chase County, Kansas. You may view his grave stone on Findagrave.com. You will notice that two sons' deaths are inscribed also. I have had no success in locating the burial site of Myron's wife,
Prudence Pauline (Paulina) Pease Drinkwater as yet. She is not in the Cedar Point Cemetery. John Drinkwater has been an elusive ancestor to trace. Do you know where in NY he was born or anything else about him? In which cemetery in Topeka did Myron purchase grave sites?

Glad to see you are back with your research Mike.
I am still making discoveries about the Derbyshire Drinkwaters.
I told you I was unable to trace the wife of John, son of Edward Drinkwater, baptised in 1710 in Hayfield Parish Church.
Yesterday I found a record of a marriage bond for his intended marriage to Mary Booth, spinster of Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire for 30 October 1753
Mottram is not very far from Beard where the D. family lived at this time.
The ref is "England, Cheshire Marriage Bonds and Allegations 1606-1910" found on Ancestry.
My basic membership does not enable me to open this link.
I also suspect that this was John's second marriage. Am working on this!
Meadowgate
It's in Cheshire, UK. I can't find any likely Charles Drinkwater here.
I have a funeral card for an Elizabeth Edge wife of the late Thomas Edge of Manley Cottage Erbistock.
Have you got any further with this? My Drinkwaters come from Rosthern, Cheshire. The Cheshire County Archive people are very helpful and put me on to a site where you can see all the Parish Registers in the area going back to 1538. Thomas is a common name - perhaps I'll have a look for their marriage.

I saw that there are towns named Rosthern and Drinkwater in Canada and I'm sure that they must have been named by one of my ancestors relatives.

Barbara

You are right, I have confused the two Joseph Drinkwaters born 1804/1809.

Henry DRINKWATER b 1800, in 1841 at Clough Head, Chinley, Derbyshire, England with Joseph aged '60' in the household. Note that Mary MARSHALL aged 10 years is with the family at the time of this census. It looks like Hannah BRAMWELL (chr 1807 nearby Chapel-en-le-Frith) first married Miles MARSHALL (b abt 1807, Levenshulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, married 1828 at Chapel-en-le-Frith) and they had children Walter and Mary Louisa (chr March 1831, Chapel-en-le-Frith).

Edward and Sarah not only had a Joseph (b 1804) but they also had a Henry (b 1800, confusingly).

I'll answer offline on the Derbyshire FHS question

I suspect that you may be confusing two different strands of the huge Drinkwater family.
There were two Josephs born 1804 and 1809. Both were bt. at The Former Mill Brow Independent Chapel, Marple Bridge.
Their fathers were cousins Edward and Joseph both farming on the "New Land" in the Mellor area. Their ancestor was William Drinkwater of Green Head Farm in Bugsworth.

Edward and Sarah's son was a shoemaker who married Elizaberh Handford and lived at Wood Cottage in Bugsworth.

Joseph, son of Joseph and Ann was the manager of the Waterworks in Duckinfield, Cheshire. His son, James married Esther Morten.
Henry, son of Joseph and Ann married Hannah Marshall and inherited Clough Head Farm Bugsworth.

Joseph, son of Henry married Leah.

There are records in New Mills and Taxal for "Waterworks" Joseph and his family. Elizabeth died in 1865 and is buried at Taxal. Joseph re-married 16 Aug. 1871 at St Mary's Stockport to Sarah Frost. I think he may be buried at Hayfield.

Are you a member of Derbyshire FHS? There is a member who has published articles about the Mortens and Turners. She is also looking for the Turner- Drinkwater marriage.

I will keep looking for the burials of Joseph and Leah.

Hope this helps

I am away from home for a few days but on my return I will be able to answer the queries in your post.
I have recently been tracing the children of Henry and Betty Drinkwater
I also have some information about the two Josephs in my files.

The Drinkwaters also owned Ravensleach and Edward wrote his will there in (I think 1756) He left the farm to his grandson John Worrall. Later it was owned by the Hall family who became rich from the coal mined at Ravensleach.

I have as g6 grandparents a Sarah who married Ralph TURNER (chr 1706 CelF) of Chapel-en-le-Frith abt 1730 (no marriage found but their eldest known child christened 1731). She was buried at Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1802.

She is suspected to have been a Drinkwater.

Can anybody confirm the suspicion with some evidence? Can anybody provide a lead on her ancestry?

Two grand-daughters of the above Ralph and Sarah married local Drinkwaters:

Henry DRINKWATER (b 1800 Disley) m Hannah BRAMWELL 1838 Chapel-en-le-Frith
James DRINKWATER (b 1834 Bugsworth) m Esther MORTEN 1853 Stockport
Interesting to read about Henry marrying Betty HANDFORD at Glossop in 1788. I am looking at Joseph DRINKWATER (b abt 1808) marrying Elizabeth HANDFORD at Glossop in 1832 and the places of burial of 26 Mar 1891 death of Joseph DRINKWATER (died 26 Mar 1891)and his wife Leah DRINKWATER (nee Goddard, death registered Q1 1891).

Incidentally, I have another connection between Ravensleach/Ravenslack at Ollersett/Birch Vale. I suspect this property was in the ownership of the Allens of Chapel-en-le-Frith in the early 18th century and on the death of the last of the male line, Thomas ALLEN in 1713 it seems this property went to his sister Grace. She first married Anthony RADCLIFF of Spinner Bottom, Thornsett in 1728. After husband Anthony died, Grace remarried to widower Samuel Wild (marriage details not found). I just thought this snippet might help.

Dear Mike,
I hope you will be in contact soon because I have spent the last months sorting out the descendents of John and Mary at Goytside. I cannot tell you Mary's name because I cannot find a marriage. It could be at Stockport St Mary but not in nearby Cheshire parishes. At her burial at Hayfield she was described as the widow of John Drinkwater.
The farm in Chinley where their son John and his wife Mary lived until they went to America is for sale. The price is £500,000. There are pictures on the internet. It is called Maynestone Farm and they were the owners.
Meadowgate

However I have spent some time re- reading parish records and documents about the area and am not as certain as I can be that this couple are indeed our ancestors in common.
They had several children. Their second son William is my ancestor and their youngest son, John is yours.
I have begun to write notes about this period which are too long to include here but I could send them by e-mail privately if you would like them.
Meadowgate

If you can find that book it might help you. God luck! Warren Drinkwater

I have spent a lot of time this winter trying to sort out the earliest records of the High Peak, Derbyshire Drinkwaters. I have now searched the Hayfield records many times but there are so many illegible or spoilt pages that it is not possible to find all the records for this family.
It is quite possible to connect one generation with another but without conclusive proof. However I feel fairly sure that the Edward who married Ann Wild is one of the oldest children of Edward and Ruth Drinkwater of Higg Hill born possibly in 1675. The next child, Jane, was baptised at Hayfield on July 17 1676. The pages here were very difficult to read in this part of the record.
I see that you have investigated the Marriage Bond. Did you see any original information? I am not able to access this information but hope you can help me to find out more about this Edward.
Meadowgate

I don't have any connection to this family but found this while doing other research. I am posting hundreds of these “blurbs” because I believe it helps to see our ancestors as people rather than just names and dates and, in some cases, it helps to place where our ancestors were during a certain period of time.

It is from the April 13, 1901 issue of the Rockland-Maine Courier-Gazette in a column entitled "This Week Twenty-Five Years Ago." It covers "happenings" in the Rockland vicinity for the week ending Apr. 13, 1876."

"The upper story of Capt. J.J. Drinkwater's house on Hibernia street was damaged by fire. The fire originated in a clothes press and was discovered by Miss MInnie Drinkwater, daughter of Capt. Drinkwater, who was lying sick with a fever in one of the chambers."

In checking further, Capt. Drinkwater died in Rockland on May 27, 1917 and is buried at the Seaview Cemetery in Rockland.

I have no connection to this family but wanted to share this information as this would be impossible to come by and I know personally how helpful this can be. It is from the book "Vital Records of St. George, Maine". Included in there is an 1895 Town Census. In most cases they give ACTUAL birth dates AND also in most cases, they give the wife’s maiden name. Apparently they’re not all in alphabetical order, so I may be adding to this, so here goes:

p. 516

Drinkwater
Fred, b. June 8, 1856
Annie (Best), b. Apr 12, 1866
Edward, b. Aug 17, 1887
Henry, b. Nov 3, 1888
Herbert, b. May 25, 1890
Alden, b.

Firstly there are several Edward Drinkwaters in the Hayfield Parish records. One of these is the father of the brothers we are researching.
I have not found a marriage for any of thse Edwards in either Glossop records, which are well preserved, or in Hayfield records which have many spoilt of illegible pages.
This probably means that the marriages were not in these churches which means that they were not in the ancient parish of Glossop.
I have also looked in Chapel en le Frith records but not in great depth.
I suspect that these marriages were in Cheshire. Disley is a parish in Cheshire as is Marple. They are both in the area we are researching but I cannot access records for Cheshire as they are not held at Matlock which has only Derbyshire Records.
I have also found the marriage bond for Edward and Ann Wild.
I may be able to find out more when I can visit the National Archives at Kew in London.
They could possibly be the parents of Edward.
I was back in Matlock this week to look at the Hayfield records from 1635. The baptisms of Edward's children are there. He probably lived at Higg Hill Farm and certainly owned another farm called Ravensleach in Ollersett and later bought Green Head farm in Bugsworth.
Mary Buckley was NOT the wife of John of Goytside.
She was the wife of John, son of William of Green Head farm.
I can't find a marriage for John and Mary of Goytside in Glossop or Hayfield so it may be in the other parishes I mentioned.
Yes I have done a lot of research into this family. I will try to answer any other questions as I am sure you will think of some more.
Meadowgate

Dear Mike,
I have been researching the Drinkwater Family, mainly using the records at Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock.
I have been trying to find the family of John Drinkwater who lived at Mainstone Farm, Chinley, Derbyshire. I cannot trace him after the 1841 census in England although his elder children were still there.
Through your message I can see that he took Mary and the younger children to America.
I have gone back to look at my huge collection of notes and after a visit to Matlock last week feel very confident that I can match him to his parents and ancestors.

Edward Drinkwater had four sons;
William who is my ancestor,
James whose children all died in infancy, Thomas who lived at Gow Hole Farm, who is the ancestor of another researcher already in contact with you and John who is the grandfather of the John who emigrated.
John and Mary lived at Goytside Farm in Bugsworth. They were tenants of Lord Cavendish.
I have not yet found a marriage record for them so cannot tell you Mary's family name.
John died in 1784. I have seen a copy of his will which was very simple. He mentions his sons Henry and William and his daughters Mary Shirt and Ellen Pearson. He also mentions his gran/god /daughters Mary Drinkwater and Nancy Hurst.
We now know the names of his children.
I think that his son Henry is the father of John of Mainstone.
Henry married Betty Handford on Jan 13 1785 in Glossop Parish Church.
Their children were baptised in Hayfield Parish Church:
Betty 1790, JOHN 1792, Mary 1794 and Hannah in 1799.
John and Mary called their first son Henry James. The Drinkwaters followed the traditional naming pattern for generations so this also indicates that his paternal grandfather was Henry.
I hope this answers some of your questions,
Meadowgate

Dear Mike,
I have some information for you about John Drinkwater who once lived at Mainstone Farm, Chinley, Derbyshire, England.
I have been researching the Drinkwater families of this area and have, until this week been unable to link this John with his parents. He is undoubtbly one of this extended family. He disappeared from the records after the 1841 census although the two older children can be found.
Thanks to you I now know that he went to America.
I thought I had found his parents but realized that I had found his grandparents who were also a John and Mary.
John and Mary lived at Goyt Side Farm in Bugsworh. They were tenants of Lord Cavendish.
John died in 1784. I have seen a copy of his will where he mentions his children so we can be sure of their names.
They were:
Henry, William, Mary Shirt, and Ellen Pearson. Also mentioned are grand./d or god/daughters Mary Drinkwater and Nancy Hurst.
So far I have not been able to find a marriage for John and Mary so I don't know who she was.
I think that their son Henry is the father of John who emigrated.
Henry married Betty Handford on January 13 in Glossop Parish Church.
I went to look up the parish registers last week and found the baptisms at Hayfield for their children;
Betty 1780, JOHN 1792, Mary 1794 and Hannah 1799.
I hope this will answer some of your questions.
Meadowgate

I very much look forward to hearing from you!

From your message to Mike above, it looks like you are proposing that Thomas Drinkwater of Gowhole Farm was grandfather to the Thomas who married Elizabeth Shirt because from what I can see, the latter's parents were John and Sarah (nee Marriott) Drinkwater.

Hopefully you still have the same email address?

Hello,
Yes, I think we have been in touch by e-mail and I will contact you again.
I know I did promise to send info but have not yet done so!
I spent an intensive time sorting out the many families descended from William Drinkwater who lived at Green Head Farm, Bugsworth. I made great progress with this research which I have written as a word doc.
I intended to continue with the line from Thomas of Gow Hole but had come to the end of my travelling to Matlock during the mid-winter.!(08/09)
Since then I have been involved with other families and am trying to write up research.
I just happened to see the posts about the Drinkwaters and felt I was holding info I could share.
I am now looking for a train timetable for Derbyshire.
Meadowgate
