my drontribution

Hi all Drons! I'm a Dron living in Glasgow, Scotland, where my family goes back a long way.

I've read with interest all the comments about origins/roots of the name. I've been led to believe the name is of French origin, coming over with the Normans in the 11th century, although this could be wrong (came from a family history company who sell tacky family crest coasters and prints etc.)

My dad did some research a few years ago and traced our tree back roughly three hundred years, I'll try get some info from him to share. I too have been to the village of Dron in Perthshire, not much going on there, although I know at least one of my ancestors is buried in the graveyard. For about two hundred years the predominant line of Drons in my family went from Alexander-James-Alexander-James until my father, Alexander, called me Gavin. Before that the only other i know of was a William Dron, a woodcutter from.........Dron

I think Dron must be one of the rarest surnames, I'm proud to be a Dron, even though it can be a total pain saying it over and over again to people on the phone, only for them to still get it wrong!
Look forward to hearing from you

Dear Linda

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I note that you only have 3 children of James Dron and Jean Rintoul, including your Helen - in an age where they had many more!. It is entirely possible that my Thomas could be your Helen's sister. James and Jean must have had more than 3 children???. This has given me a lot to go on so I will ferret away and let you know if I come up with anything.

By the way, what sources have you used for the above Drons IGI?OPR? This might help me on my way.

Thanks again
Regards
Anne

We are also interested in a Henry Charles Dron and have just come upon your message. It seems likely that they are the same people -

My mothers' grandfather was Henry Charles Dron (1861 - 1945) and we kow that he had 3 sisters, Louisa, Mary and Emma. He married Flora Helps (1877 - 1941) and their daughter Florence Lilian was my grandmother.

We know very little about this strand of the family and would be really interested to find out some more. Anything to further our search would be gratefully received!

While researching my family in Dorset, came across my husband's family name here - Thomas Dron, schoolteacher born Scotland, living Dorchester on the 1891 census, (aged 43) and his son Thomas (9)etc. By accident also found out more about him in the local year book. Anyone know what line he's from? Didn't find him in the family trees online.

No, there are others alive and kicking in the UK. I'm lucky enough to be married to one of these rare beasts. He has a dad and two brothers, and we also believe the family goes back to the village of Dron.
The scadinavian connection is a bit tenuous - some have a theory that the Dron name is connected to Tron over there, but you'll find it's the old word here for Hill (which the village is surrounded by) and you'll see later references in these messages to Draughn, which is pronounced Dron, and is also an Irish (Gaelic/Celtic?) version.
Recurring family occupations seem to be artists, decorators, railways (drivers), carpentry, should your family have tendencies in this direction.

Please see messages regarding Henry C. Dron. He's on the 1891 census, then widowed at 69, about right for your d.o.b. He's also on the 81 census, married to Anne and has a son, Henry C. We think we're related, but not yet sure how!

We are researching family history and came across Henry C Dron on the census. He's also on the 1891 census as living with the Uttings - have you got that entry? My husband's father has a vague feeling he has a memory of a cabinet maker as a relative. The direct relatives are on the censuses too - Andrew and Davina, he was son of Andrew, son of John...There is a cousin Peter (maybe not first cousin) who may be connected to Henry C.? Please let us know if you find a connection. If there's any info we can give you, let us know - we have from Andrew onwards to current.
We visited Dron (the village), having heard it had given the family its name and that the churchyard was "stuffed with Drons". Oddly, we found none. The village is tiny, very beautiful and remote. We had also heard of the Rocking Stone of Dron nearby, but failed to find that. We brought back a small pebble and rocked it at home. The church, by the way, is lovely but empty and falling down (needs an owner).
Any of you have a connection to our line, Andrew Dron, born Perthshire; his father John, born? married Perthshire 1829. We have info from then on to current living family.

No problems, Kerry. I found Henry on the 1891 census on Ancenstry by searching Dron in general. He's in Battersea, District or Parish of All Saints, St George's Street, looks like 23. He's living with Thomas W Utting (Head) (Bricklayer), Mary E. (wife) (Upholsteress) and Elizabeth, Ada, Millie and Rosa their daughters. Henry C is Father in law, widower, aged 69, cabinet maker born Scotland.

Hi Linda

I am researching the Drons of Perth, Scotland and wonder if you have come across a Thomas Dron, a farmer who married Ann Gregor 28 Aug 1812 in Perth,Perthshire, Scotland? Thomas was my gggg-grandfather through his daughter Ann Dron. Thomas Dron and Ann Gregor's other children were John b.1814, Margaret b.1816, William b.1817, another William b.1821, Charles b.1821 all in Perth.

I haven't been able to get any further back on Thomas (ie where and when he was born, who his parents were)

I would appreciate any help you could offer if you think our Drons are linked!

Thanking you in advance,

Anne Thomson

James and Helen Dron Cameron immigrated to Ontario Canada in April 1849. I would like to find more information about this family.
Hi Chris-So nice to hear from you. You are right we are 7th cousins pretty distant but a connection nonetheless. I wonder if you would be interested in exchanging information on the descendants of Jean Dron and John Cowper? I have quite a bit of information on the descendants of Jean's sister Helen Dron and her husband James Cameron. As far as ancestors going back I begin with William Dron born 1680 married Isobel Brown. They had 6 children. Their son Alexander Dron married Helen Stobie and they had 5 children. Their son James Dron married Jean Rintoul. I have 3 children for them-Alexander, Jean whio married John Cowper and Helen who married James Cameron. And that brings us to where we made a connection. You can contact me directly at lou_c_goose@yahoo.com I have worked on my family history for 35+ years but it is the internet that has allowed me to find so much information and many family connections. Do you live in the area where this family originated? I am an accountant and have found that I come honestly by my love of numbers and making things balance. Helen Stobie I understand ran a store in Scotland prior to immigration to Ontario and my grandparents ran 2 different stores-grocery and paint/home improvement. I have 6 children-none of whom seem to share my passions. At this point they just like to roll their eyes like I am wasting my time. I also have information on the Rintoul family back to 1679. Would be happy to share whateveer you are interested in. So nice to have met you this way. Linda DenBoer
