My grandmother was Delia Bridget Droney from Bellharbour Ballyvaugn area of County Clare. She came from a family of 13 and she married James Jamieson, a Scot from Aberdeen. They were married in Boston, returned to Scotland, then came to Toronto, Canada. They finally settled in New Jersey. I remember my grandmother living with us when I was 3-4 years old in Trenton, NJ. She had at least one other sister in the U.S., her sister Marian. My granmother died in the early 1950's at about 68 years of age. I know of a direct relative, a Chris Droney, in Ballyvaugn.

New Droney Information

I just returned from the Milltown Malbay region of Clare and found the following information in the Mullagh Parish just south of Milltown (Shanaway):

Family of James Droney and Bridget Kinnane
Mary, 2/4/1854
Tom, 12/16/1855
Catherine, 4/24/1858
Bridget, 9/22/1860
John, 2/21/1863
Kate, 7/26/1865
Nora, 11/9/1867
Maurice, 1/1/1870
Jane, 4/24/1872
Margaret, 2/13/1875

Family of Michael Droney and Catherine Sullivan
Bridget, 6/19/1844
Mary, 12/12/1846
(John supposed to be listed here born 3/25/1849)
Nora, 11/8/1854

Family of Patrick Droney and Mary Talty
Peter, 4/28/1841
Bridget, 1/17/1844
Bridget, 10/31/1846
Michael, 7/22/1849
John, 2/2/1853
Tim, 4/2/1856

Family of Michael Droney and Catherine White
Bridget, 1/28/1890
Patrick, 3/28/1891
Ellen, 9/25/1892
Mary, 9/22/1894
Michael, 12/21/1895
John, 4/10/1897
Margaret, 5/11/1898
James, 8/30/1899
Honora, 1/6/1901

Family of Peter Droney and Catherine Darcy
Honora, 10/16/1875
Margaret, 9/22/1877

In speaking with several Droney's still in the area we believe that James, Michael and Patrick were most likely brothers and the records would have shwn that to be the case if it would have gone back one more generation.

Also, it is apparently VERY common for names of children to be missing from the parish records for a variety of reasons. Doesn't really help those of us researching unless we already know the parent's names.

Reply with any questions and I'll see what I can do.

Karen,

I just returned from Milltown Malbay, Co Clare, and found the information on James Droney and Bridget Kinnane (as it was spelled in the parish records). The following is an index of the Droney's from the Shanaway townland just outside Milltown Malbay and the records of which are kept in the Mullagh Church offices:

Family of James Droney and Bridget Kinnane
Mary, 2/4/1854
Tom, 12/16/1855
Catherine, 4/24/1858
Bridget, 9/22/1860
John, 2/21/1863
Kate, 7/26/1865
Nora, 11/9/1867
Maurice, 1/1/1870
Jane, 4/24/1872
Margaret, 2/13/1875

Family of Michael Droney and Catherine Sullivan
Bridget, 6/19/1844
Mary, 12/12/1846
(John supposed to be listed here born 3/25/1849)
Nora, 11/8/1854

Family of Patrick Droney and Mary Talty
Peter, 4/28/1841
Bridget, 1/17/1844
Bridget, 10/31/1846
Michael, 7/22/1849
John, 2/2/1853
Tim, 4/2/1856

Family of Michael Droney and Catherine White
Bridget, 1/28/1890
Patrick, 3/28/1891
Ellen, 9/25/1892
Mary, 9/22/1894
Michael, 12/21/1895
John, 4/10/1897
Margaret, 5/11/1898
James, 8/30/1899
Honora, 1/6/1901

Family of Peter Droney and Catherine Darcy
Honora, 10/16/1875
Margaret, 9/22/1877

I spoke with several Droney's still in the area and we all conclude that James, Michael and Patrick were most likely brothers from one family that the records would have shown if they would have gone back one more generation.

My particular family line comes from Michael Droney and Catherine Sullivan although my John Droney is not listed as part of the family. The locals explained that it was not unusual for children's births/baptisms to not have been recorded, actually quite common. Doesn't help those of us who are trying to do research, does it.

If you are still researching this line I have several pics you might be interested in, including the old Droney homestead.

Sean

Mary,

I was curious about your Droney line as mine settled in Salamanca/Great Valley around 1892 through a John Droney and Mary Gorman. I know that Mary Gorman was from Coor in Co Clare (around Milltown Malbay) and I think (stress think) that John was from a little town of Annagh in the same area(purely a guess).

Sean

Alice,

great to hear from you. Would love to get a copy of all you have, as it may help me fill in some blanks. John and Patrick being brothers makes sense to me, and the father as James also makes sense, because I believe I saw something in the Ennistymon Poor Records that listed a James Droney, but I will have to check.

It would be so great to see pictures of these people I have been researching for years.

Have you ever checked out my website www.tribalpages.com user ID kamelion2000? Would love to get feedback on that.

Thanks again for all the great information!!

Norah

Several years ago, I received a booklet of the Droney family, showing pictures and information about the family. The picture of the sons of Patrick and Mary, shows a cousin, Patrick Hogan. In the written history of the family, it states "Auntie Hogan" lived to over a hundred years old. I would assume that cousin Patrick is the son of Auntie Hogan. I finally found Mary Hogan's obituary and death record. Her obituary list sons as John and Patrick. Parents listed as James Droney (same as Patrick Droney) and Catherine Carroll. I have a record of Patrick Droney's birth (1832) in Ireland, listing parents as James and Ellen Droney. I am searching for Patrick's death record to check his parents names. Both Patrick and Mary Hogan have the same father's name, but different mother's names. I hope I have made this clear enough, but if you want additional information or copies of what I have, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Alice Gourlay (Michigan)

they came over Jan 13 1866 on the Edinburgh, I have a note to myself that the port was Liverpool. A lot of ships that left England made a stop in Ireland after leaving their original port, and I can't tell if that is what happened here. As stated, I haven't found the ship Patrick came over on. He might have been working his way over, which would make it very difficult to find. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found it.

Lorraine,

What is ocallaghans mills, killuran near? Just curious and couldn't find it on a map. I have a feeling that in order to find any additional information I may have to "hop the pond" and visit Co Clare myself.

Don't know if I wrote it previously, my line comes from Miltown Malbay. I hear there are a number of family burial plots in and around Coor East and Miltown.

Sean

Lorraine,

Would you happen to know where in Ireland they came from? I've only been able to find mine (a different John Droney and his wife was Mary Gorman) back as far as 1860ish. I've been curious though if some made there way to Austraila since that seems to be the only other region for the Droney clan to have moved.

I do not have much info on him as to birth, death, etc. I have absolutely nothing on his parents or siblings. I also do not have info on his wife except that she was either Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary Meier or Maher. Can anyone fill me in on any info or help me out in any way. They came to the US and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. They had 10 children:
Margaret b. abt 1914
Catherine Marie b. 1916
Helen b. abt 1918
Lawrence Jr. b. 1920
Austin b. abt 1922
James b. abt 1923
John b. abt 1925
Anna b. abt 1928
Theresa
Mary
Are you descended from any of these men?
Norah, nice also to hear from you.

I do not believe there was a "Lilly" in Dennis' family. I think it was probably Leo that was misrepresented in the 1900 census, and I'm sure you know by now that the censuses in those days were only as good as the informant and the census taker.

I do believe however, that there could very well be "mixed up" names among the children of Dennis and Daniel through the various family trees that have surfaced over the past few years. I make comment in my notes as far back as 2004, that there seems to be some discrepancies requiring further research.

I guess "Lilly" will be the next one to you to search for.

Evelyn

It was 13 Jan 1866, the ship Edinburgh. Have also filled in some info on the marriages of the kids, check out my website, www.tribalpages.com user ID kamelion2000

Hope things are well for you!!!

Oh, also, I have been in touch with a James Bond who is helping a Chris Duff or Duffy. He sent me naturalization stuff on Patrick, but I am not sure it is the right one. Turns out there are 3 Patricks in the area. Am trying to get this figured out with Sean Droney (who lives in MO also, just 2 hours away!!). Sean is going to Ireland Aug 8th for a fact-finding mission. Hopefully he will bring back some good info.

Please let me know where you got the naturalization info from.

Hope things are well for you.

Norah Droney

I am trying to find out some info on the above. Dennis was the son of Patrick and Mary Droney, their 8th child, born Apr 1871.

I have been researching their children and found a very weird thing. Lilly is listed in the 1900 census as age 4. In the 1910 census, when she would be 14, she is not listed, but a Leo is listed as age 14. Leo is not listed in the 1900 census. Also, 1900 census lists 4 births, 3 alive and 1910 census lists 9 births, 7 alive. Did Lilly die between 1900 and 1910? And what happened to Leo that he is not listed on the 1900 census, but is listed on the 1910 census.

Anyone who is of this line and can give me more info, that would be great.

Thanks, Norah Droney

I have just started to try and find information on my family. I have an aunt in Canandaguia, NY that I question regarding the Droney's. I have a Droney family bible that was given to me recently and found a certificate of Promotion for a William Droney issued on 6/26/1896 to go from the 6th grade into the 7th grade. I will get ahold of my Aunt and ask about Patrick Droney because I have heard them talk about a Patrick Droney. Is this the area that he would have been from or thereabouts? If so, I am wondering he is the same. I would like to get a copy of the papers if they are one of the same man. Thanks, Mary

Their daughter Ellen married William O'Neill in 1870 in Fallbrook, Pa. They are my great grandparents. Anything you can share about them would be wonderful

Matrimonial - Silas E. Foster & Miss Bessie Droney - Lowell Sun - Lowell MA - December 28, 1922

While at the library copying obits for someone, I managed to get a copy of the following matrimonial. I wanted to post it in the hope that it is helpful to someone.

Lowell Sun
Lowell MA
December 28, 1922

FOSTER - DRONEY

A pretty wedding took place yesterday afternoon at the Sacred Heart rectory when Mr. Silas E. Foster and Miss Bessie Droney were united in the bonds of matrimony, the ceremony being performed by the pastor, Rev. John P. Flynn, O.M.I. The bride wore brown chiffon velvet with picture hat to match and carried bridal roses. She was attended by her sister, Miss Vera Droney, who was attired in gray divotyne and carried pink roses. The best man was Mr. Geo. A. Foster, brother of the groom. The bride's gift to the bridesmaid was a gold mesh bag, while the groom's favor to the best man was a pair of green gold cuff links. At the close of the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride, the wedding march being played by Mr. James McMahon. Supper was served and entertainment numbers were given. The couple left on an extended honeymoon trip to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. After January 15 they will make their home in this city.
John Droney

Hi, I am looking for any information about my great, great, grandfather John Droney who was born in Ireland in 1831. His father's name was Patrick. He married Catherine Boyle (Thomas Boyle) and had at least one child, James who was born in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, England in 1856. The 1861 census shows Catherine and her son James living in Oswaldtwistle. Any information on James (John) and/or Catherine would be most welcome.
Barry
