My dad has a book in which we found the name Smerger Drought when Ireland was settled in around the 700 AD time frame. He has printed me a copy of it, apart from that I do not have too much information at this time.

Hi, I am interested in the Drought Family & the history of Droughtville. I am a gr.grson of Thomas & Mary Pillsworth( nee Bayly)Drought. I am also interested in how Thomas Died and what they did prior to Mary coming to New Zealand with her Children,in 1865. Mary's Daughter, Anna married Henry George Walmsley,& they had 8 children.If you could help me ,I would appreciate it very much.

I haven't been on this site for a while and was surprised to see something after 7 years and only yesterday to boot. The Drought name is not french, though over the course of history there would have been marriages, arranged or otherwise, with the people of France. The Drought name is actually a Danish name. There is recorded history dating the Drought name to early Ireland at the same time that St. Patrick was converting the Celts to Christianity 432 AD. The Drought name is associated with the early vikings that settled in Ireland. During the invasions, the vikings helped to defend Ireland against the invaders and as a result were given land grants in thanks. It is pretty safe to say that those of us with this common last name all come from the same source. I have quite a bit of information in my home and access to even more through my father. i am myself a drought,my father was robert his father also robert,strange as it mite seem my name is kathleen veronica drought but im known as vera to my family and friends here in cork

just came across ur post wat stands out is that my grandfather robert drought on his headstone there is an agnes but i never new this person and the name just appeared there in there last few years,i no its not my grandmothe cause she is buried outside bandon,dont no who this woman agnes was to my grandfather cause it doesnt say on the headstone.

hi im also a drought, my grandfather was robert,but wat i was told growing up was that the name was french,my grandfather came from macroom co cork but as far as i no his family were the only droughts from this part of ireland.he is buried just outside the town of macroom on the way to kilarney if u find that of any help for ur family tree

Droughts of Roscrae

My maternal grandfather was Robert Henry Drought of Ballybritt Castle, Roscrae, Kings County. He came to England in the early 1920s and settled in Scarborough, North Yorkshire and died in about 1954. He married Hilda Cheesbrough and they had one daughter, my mother, Harriet Patricia. My brother and I are keen to find out more about the family - I know he had an unmarried sister, Harriet, who died in Belfast in the 1970s. Does anyone know any more about the Droughts of Roscrae?

Droughts in Michigan

My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Drought, daughter of Samuel Drought and Elizabeth Larkin. I know the family originally emigrated from Ireland to Canada to Michigan. Elizabeth's parents and siblings are buried in Douglas Cemetery in Allegan Co., Michigan.

Elizabeth married and divorced Dighton Riley. They had two daughters, Alyce and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Drought Riley died in 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri.

I am seeking any information on this line of the Drought family. I would especially like to know about Samuel's parents and where in Ireland they were from. Elizabeth Larkin's family was supposed to have lived around Dublin.

I am looking for descendants of Vivienne (nee Thompson) and Dick Drought who lived in Dublin.
Vivienne died young and My aunt, Mrs Agnes (Cissie) Thompson (born in Scotland, 1888), lived with Dick and his four children (2 girls and 2 boys).
One boy was called Dermot and ? the girls were Mary and Elizabeth.

Any clues would be very helpful.

If your Grt Grt Grandmother Jane had a brother called John it is possible that we have a connection. I have traced a line of John's via Brighton in 1820 to St Helens in England in 1930's and still living.

I would appreciate any advice on this line??

Hi Susan, My brother has the name Smerger as a middle name. A few years ago, my father sent me some pages scanned from Doctor Hanmers Chronicles of Ireland. I believe that the book is quite old, but it details some of the land grants given to the soldiers that fought in Ireland (I believe they were the early Roman Invasions) in the year 432 AD. One of the names listed as a recipient is Smerger Drought who kept Bondroys. I have also been told that very early (I believe before the book info) that the name was once a last name and carried forward as a middle name, which is still a common practice today. Thank you for your reply. I believe he was born c1820 & married 1855 & came from Roscrea. Also that they had no children but not sure as I lost my data in a computer crash. His wife was nee SOTHERN & I think there were other marriages (other surnames) to DROUGHTs also but now having to reasemble info.

I have in my possesion the complete family tree of the Droughts going back to the 1690's. There are any number of Droughts born and living around the early 1800's with the name Thomas but they are not all listed with their spouses so it is diffucult to determine which one you are looking for. Do you have a second and/or third name for this particular Thomas

Col. Drought would be between 70 and 80 years old by now. He might be a descendant of your Col. Drought.

We may connect. I am a descendant of Capt. Laurence Drought who was born ca. 1760. I believe that his line goes back to Co. Offaly. The best information I have is that his father may have been John (d. 1780), son of Robert (d. 1784), son of John (d. 1747), son of Robert (d. 1726), son of Richard, son of John.

Do you have any reason to believe that the early Droughts came to Ireland with William III in 1690?

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. I know of a Col. George W. Drought of Co. Roscommon in Ireland in the latter 19th Century. A number of British soldiers found were stationed in Ireland in those days. Could he or a dexcendant be your man?

Alot of those names and homes were on my own
document which was verified in 1814 on the 12th
day of February.

I have spent the best part of this past weekend
doing an on-line family tree at www.ancestry.com
The message is that it will take at least 10 days
before viewing is available (January 24, 2001). I
obtained the information from a photocopy of the
Family Tree and it goes back approx. 12 generations
to roughly 1650. Please feel free to contact me
with any information. I did decide that it is time
to purchase a good software, as I am sure that
I could have cut my time, entering info.

I hope that this proves a useful tool to all of
the Drought's out there and that some missing links
are filled.
