Classification: Query
Surnames: Druce Marett Merrett
My great-grandmother was Ada Mary Druce, born in Jersey in 1864. Ada's mother was Mary Jane Marett (or similar, possibly Merrett), born on 9th April 1837 but it has never been possible to find out where. Mary Jane's parents were John and Eliza, the 1841 Jersey census says they were all born in "England".
Back to the Druces and the Somerset connection - Ada's father was George James Druce,
b. 1829 in Chiselborough. His parents, Samuel Druce and Ann Chick, were married at West Chinnock in 1828 and George had 9 siblings (1832 -1851). Samuel was the son of George Druce and Elizabeth Slade who were married on 29th October 1803 and had 5 other children.
Returning to Ada, in Jersey, she was one of 10 children of George and Mary Jane, the others being William (1861), Alfred (1863), Joseph (1866), Samuel (1868), Arthur (1870), Louisa (1873), Alice (1875), Eliza (1877) and Clara (1879). Of these, the most interesting is Joseph Henry Druce (1866), who married Mary and had 4 daughters before following in his brother Alfred's footsteps and migrating to Australia, where he died in NSW in 1924. He appears to have left his family in Jersey as at least one of his daughters was known to be living in an orphanage.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who is connected to the Druces - more information is available - especially any in Australia or any help with tracing Mary Jane's origins.
